[H] SATA connector destroyed?
I was inside my PC last nightwent to reconnect the optical drives...noticed that one of the indexed sata power connector was broken..the short part of the L was broken off...could barely get the power connector to hold...even worse for the data cable. After I got it all back together, the power to the drive is there, but I can't see the drive, so obviously the data connector is hosed since the cable won't grip. Anyone ever see this before? Are SATA connectors robust? I have my doubts. This is a blu-ray reader / DVD writer, so it's nearly $100 to replace
[H] The Nightmare of 775
I was upgrading the processor in my 2+ year old 775 mobosince I wanted to overclock, I decided to use the Ninja Plus cooler I bought 2 years ago but never used since I decided I wasn't going to over clock. Well, the stock intel heatsink/fan with the pushpins is a real pain to deal with on a 775 mobo...but damn! Try to install a Ninja Plus! The fins are like supersharp rasor...trying to push the pushpins with the fins and heatsinks for the nb is impossibleso after you get all bloody you decide to turn the Ninja Plus upside down...and install the mobo from the top, onto the bottom on the Ninja, while holding the mobo upside down. AFter a while you get it on there...and the pins appear to have pushed though. YAY, you say. You turn the pushpins so they lock...then you insert the mobo into the case, and get everything screwed and plugged in then you use the system...moving it...opening the case...whatnot. Then you start noticing that some of your cores seem to run hotter than the others even under loadwhy would that be? Well, finally, you tough the humongous Ninja and notice that that sucker is just sort of hanging there loosewaiting to fall off...as it is mounted horizontally, at a right angle to your mobo. Damn! Now, you got to yank that sucker and see if you can get it to hold...after you do, and put in back in there...get everything screwed and plugged in, you notice again that it's moving again! Now what do you do? There must be a better way?

Re: [H] SATA connector destroyed?
yes I have been plagued by this. The sheathing pulls off the board. If it is intact you can slip it back on, but be careful or you will break a pin. I lost one SATA connector on a top end ASUS board, after a couple of pins broke due to repeatedly falling off the board, straightening pins, and putting sheathing back on. This taught me to use a trace amount of super glue to keep the sheathing on the board. On another Intel board the sheathing came off and fell apart in two pieces when I pulled the SATA connector off, so now I have the pins sticking out of the board unable to connect to a SATA cable... so if someone has a old board they are tossing it would be great if they could pull the sheathing off the SATA port and mail it to me! I also have issues with the SATA cables falling out of the ports when the PC is just sitting. I know they make cables with clips but they only work when the connector is pointing up and is out the open, instead of stacked. I have also had a problem with the clips pulling the sheathing off the board. SATA ports and connectors are a poor design, and I am surprised they haven't fixed this in the last eight years. Anthony, Please rant on! I too, had a tough learning curve with the current/past 775 heatsink/cooler installation. To the point that I am frightened to even try and upgrade the stock Intel hs/cooler that came with my C2D-E8400's (3). It is truly a mess! I do understand the snap-fit, quarter-turn-lock business. It took me the best part of an afternoon on the first install to get it to take! It only took me 5 tries! And lots of A5 paste/clean-up/re-paste, etc.! Yes, the next 2 installs went smoother. :) And this after past installs of Alpha's and big Thermalright coolers on AMD heater's. I guess real metal mounting hardware is just too expensive now :( My only counsel is work SLOW, RTFM's, patience, work SLOW, RTFM's again, cuss alot, work SLOW! Re: [H] The Nightmare of 775
I said something similar first time one of mine fell off, OVER A YEAR LATTER, and only because I heard of the problem and yanked it off VERY easily. Mine jambed IN THE HOLES, instead of catching the pin lip on the edge of the hole on the opposite side. (I was lucky the holes fit so well...) I asked on another list. (Thanks Carl if you are here...) I was told to make sure EACH corner locks correctly. Diagonal first, and then the other 90* diagonal. You have to use EXCESSIVE FORCE, and YES the MB will flex and bulge and bend around the CPU. The noises will scare you to death. BAD DESIGN? (I have to stop now before I get REALLY agitated grin...) Seriously, When doing this, I pull the MB, and use ridged support DIRECTLY under (and around) the post I'm working on. There is no-way you can do this on the case stand-offs... Note: I think my CPU socket sat too high. That would be a REAL problem with this design. Rick Glazier - Original Message - From: Anthony Q. Martin Now what do you do? There must be a better way?

Well, I got sick of the pushpinsso I found me another heatsink fan for a low-profile system...it bolts on from the bottom...not really designed for the Ninja..but I cut off the pushpins and sort of adapted it to the Ninja...right now, it's in the systemnot sure I'm pleased with the unloaded cooling...I think I'll order the part from Scythe that lets me attach the Ninja without using pushpins. Re: [H] The Nightmare of 775
I bought this Ninja over 2 years ago. The same cooler today comes with the kit standard. The kit I'm buying is for those of us who got the older hardware. Same thing with the Zalman cooler I have in my office machine (which I bought 2 years go and the revision cooler comes with different hardware to support newer processors and better attachment methods). Difference there is I just wrote them asking for the parts and they are sending them to me for free. Re: [H] The Nightmare of 775
I'm not a fan of the retention mechanism either. I actually will now install the HSF onto the board before placing it into the case just to guarantee that the pins are completely engaged. The Intel HSFs are bad enough, but third party implementations of the push-pin approach have all seemed to be worse still--impossible as that may seem. I won't even bother with a third party HSF unless it's bolt-through anymore. My waterblock on this system is of the bolt variety, obviously. :) -Original Message- From: hardware-boun...@hardwaregroup.com [mailto:hardware- boun...@hardwaregroup.com] On Behalf Of Rick Glazier Sent: Tuesday, January 19, 2010 2:09 PM To: hardware@hardwaregroup.com Subject: Re: [H] The Nightmare of 775 I said something similar first time one of mine fell off, OVER A YEAR LATTER, and only because I heard of the problem and yanked it off VERY easily.
