Re: [H] OB's new desktop PC
I agree with Christopher, If you add a Start Menu replacement app Windows 8.1 is perfect. Runs faster then Windows 7 on the same hardware as well. Although, I prefer Start8, even though it cost $5.00. -Original Message- From: Hardware [mailto:hardware-boun...@lists.hardwaregroup.com] On Behalf Of Christopher Fisk Sent: Monday, July 7, 2014 7:01 AM To: hardw...@lists.hardwaregroup.com Subject: Re: [H] OB's new desktop PC Frankly, just throw a start menu replacement into Windows 8 and use that. IMO no reason to stay on 7 or try hunting down windows 7 installers if you're getting a windows 8 license with your PC anyways at this point. Startisback has the button images already, if you prefer classicshell you can use the png from here: http://www.paxinnovation.com/technology/restore-start-button-tweak-windows-8/ On Sat, Jul 5, 2014 at 2:25 PM, Thane Sherrington th...@computerconnectionltd.com wrote: At 02:41 PM 05/07/2014, DSinc wrote: Thane, I may have to admit guilt for this. [H] OB's new desktop PC
Forget Dell!!! It looks like OB will order a Lenovo desktop PC of the M83 series. I will not know until next Monday (post order), but after our last 3 phone conversations, I am pretty sure. Looks to be: Lenovo mid-towercase Intel Core i5-4570 processor 4GB (2x2GB dimms) DDR3 ram 500GB or 750GB em HD Optical drive (burner) M/B is unknown (could not find any internal pix) PSU is not known On-board NIC Intel Centrino Advanced N6235 (wireless bluetooth trncvr)** **probably for the wireless KBD and Mouse(?) On-board Intel graphics solution (but I suspect OB may plug in his (now!) spare nVidia Geforce GT630. Windows 8.1 PRO OS --pluswhatever extra glop Lenovo puts/hides on the HD. Thanks Collective. I truly appreciate all the help. OB may not wait until Monday. He is quite jazzed about a display 'Lenovo' at his local Best Buy, So, maybe he will bend his plastic on Sunday! Thanks, Duncan

more memory unless he went 32 bit IMO onboard graphic are fine unless he games. At 08:00 AM 7/5/2014, DSinc Poked the stick with: Forget Dell!!! But I'd check the following: Is the case tiny? If so, it will run hot and his HD will die early. Does the PS have plenty of power? What's the cooling system look like? How standard are the parts in it? If something fails, doe he have to buy a Lenovo part? T

Re: [H] OB's new desktop PC
Thane, I may have to admit guilt for this. We had many conversations about how long MS may continue to support Win7; and, how soon MS launched W8 and W8.1. I still do not know, or, understand the breadth of the issue. Both of us decided it had to do with 'Tablets.' Sadly he does own a Tablet (?an Apple IPAD?), an Apple 'Smartphone' and a Kindle 'Reader.' I shared with him that W7pro/64 installed very easily over my goofed up w8.1/plain vanilla attempt. And, he did have W7pro/64 to upgrade to. He kept railing at me wearing his MBA hat telling me me he just could not accept what MS was doing to Commercial/Industrial folks that had thousands of desktops to plan an upgrade to ?What? I begged off and said, I just do not know! I was focused on OB's homedesktop PC--ONLY. In the end, he bought W8.1pro/64, and, decided that was where he would go based on his own personal research; which seems to be some favorite websites, his USMA Alumni forum, and me (because of our Collective!). ;) (see my earlier queries.) I did have himfocused on Win7pro/64 some months back, but, he blew that off for Win8.1pro/64. I just said Fine. I now believe my OB is an ApplicationSW WONK! JMHO.
