[ha-Safran]: How about Me'ah Shearim and Public Libraries?

2004-06-02 Thread E-libraries Israel
Hello, Janet.

My guess is that the premise of your study, as stated, will not bear any
accurate results. While I understand the assumptions/observations that
you have made and wish to pursue, the term Orthodox Jew no longer has
any well defined meaning.

Anybody can call themselves an Orthodox Jew with a straight face - and
you'll be hard pressed to convince them otherwise. A limited number of
people, however, will call themselves a Torah Jew. So, perhaps this
group might be a more definitive focus group for your study.

Without elaborating on this further, then, may I propose an alternative
thesis statement for your study (based on my limited knowledge, anyway)?

How about: Why are there no Public Libraries in Me'ah Shearim?

In the interim, here are some ideas for your consideration

1) The Public Library of the Torah Jew is called a Beis Midrash.
There are differences between the two venues, especially in their
purposes. Women are not excluded from Torah study as many claim. Their
venues and purposes are simply different. A reputable seminary will
provide more details.

2) Since the Torah is all encompasing, there is no real reason for a a
Torah Jew to pursue knowledge outside of a Beis Medrash. While it is a
valid issue, the lack of tznius in today's public libraries, is really
besides-the-point and almost apologetic. Unfortunately, many
certifcation granting organizations do not readily accept Talmudic
thought or sources. So, a visit to a Public Library for case material
might be necessary. The Internet is the ultimate Public Library of
today.

3) Consider researching what Torah Judaism has to say about the
Septuagint. On the fast of the 17th of Tammuz, we mourn the translation
of the Jewish Scriptures into Greek. I think this would bring out some
interesting commentary for your study.

Hope this helps,

Good Luck,

Cheers,

Avi

[ha-Safran]: Orthodox and the Public Library

2004-06-02 Thread Eli Wise
Collection development in any public library branch reflects the patrons who
use it. This is an old professional axiom. I once went to a library in a
blue collar neighborhood and found a complete set of Chilton's auto repair
manuals in the reference section. Therefore if a neighborhood is heavily
Orthodox, the holdings may reflect that but will not make the collection
exclusively reflect that. A friend from Long Island told me that he
requested the branch to purchase Meam Loez and they did. I echo the thought
that the Orthodox patron has as much say as the Cambodian, Vietnamese, or
any other ethnic group.

I agree with Avi Shoub that defining Orthodox is not clear. Orthodox Judaism
is only monolithic in terms of adherence to halacha. The problem in
definition develops in the level and knowledge of halacha and its
stringencies. I would also like to point out that there is a segment of the
Haredi community in the United States that does not allow their children to
go to the Public Library. They perceive dangers of the both the print
materials as well as the INTERNET. It should also be pointed out that once
again even among the Haredim the approach is not monolithic.
In sum, making a relationship between the public library and the Orthodox
reader will not be useful.

I might suggest that you address the topic of information literacy of
Rabbinic primary sources. There has been literally and explosion of rabbinic
primary and secondary sources translated into English. Many people do not
know how to locate materials because they are unfamiliar with the
organization, relationship and hierarchical structure of these materials.
Things such as citation, cross referencing, etc. limit the fullest use of
these translated materials. I gave a CEU at the 2002 AJL convention on the
use of rabbinic materials. Many librarians in Day Schools found it very
useful in helping the students find materials and citations they needed for
their work.

Your research can be redirected to information literacy of rabbinics and
related secondary source material. I would bet that there are many Orthodox
people who in spite of their observances are unfamiliar with the sources and
how they work. I once had an experience where a patron had a Talmudic quote
and wanted to find the original in translation. It turned out the person who
allegedly quoted the text restructured to quote to fit the point they were
making.
Reference work and the Orthodox Jew is virtually an untapped area. If you
want further discussion please feel free to contact me.

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

[ha-Safran]: Hebrew Classics in English

2004-06-02 Thread Stuart Schnee
Toby Press offers New quality Hebrew Classics Series at affordable prices

The dramatic growth of interest in Hebrew literature over the past decades,
has spurred a parallel need for inexpensive English translations of the
classics of Modern Hebrew literature. The Toby Hebrew Classics offers well
edited, well produced texts, translated and introduced by leading experts.
Some will be new editions of works undeservedly out of print; others
present texts that were previously unavailable.

M.Y. Berdichevsky Miriam Other Stories (ISBN 1 59264 066 4) PB $14.95
The scion of a Hassidic dynasty, Berdichevsky (1865-1921), rebelled against
his family's expectations; instead he moved to Berlin, and soon dazzled its
literary circles. By 1900 he had firmly established himself with nine
volumes of articles and stories. Some of his major work was written after
WWI, notably Miriam, a novella completed shortly before his death.
Introduced by Prof. Avner Holtzman, University of Tel Aviv.

Y.H. Brenner Breakdown and Bereavement (ISBN 1 59264 067 2) PB $14.95
Yosef Haim Brenner (1881-921) an essayist, critic, translator, novelist and
poet, was the most influential literary figure in pre-State Israel, and in
effect shifted the center of Hebrew literary activities away from Europe.
He had escaped from the Russian army, and lived in London. He immigrated to
Palestine in 1909, where Breakdown and Bereavement is set prior to WWI,
when the tragic pattern of Arab-Jewish relations was taking shape. Brenner
himself was murdered by Arab rioters in a Jaffa in 1921. Translated and
with an introduction by renowned writer and translator Hillel Halkin.

M.Z. Feierberg Whither? Other Stories (ISBN 1 59264 068 0) PB $14.95
Feierberg's tragic death from tuberculosis in 1899, when he was only 25,
was also a severe blow to nascent Hebrew literature. He had grown up in a
traditional shtetl, wrote in Hebrew, and left behind short stories that
testify to a literary career as brilliant as it was brief: all his major
writing appeared within a space of four years. Translated and with an
introduction by Hillel Halkin.

FORTHCOMING IN THIS SERIES (Fall 2004):
Haim Nachman Bialik Random Harvest Other Novellas (ISBN 1 59264 094) PB
$14.95

Uri Nissan Gnessin Besides Other Stories (ISBN 1 59264 093) PB $14.95

  News Chassidic CD

Deluxe 2 CD setThe Hassidic Niggun As Sung By The Hassidim***On Sale

Consisting of a 2 CD Deluxe edition with 160 page hard cover book in Hebrew
and English, this wonderful compilation consists of Chassidic tunes, nigunim,
from the various Chassidic communities in Israel...Lubavich, Viznitz, Bobover,
etc. These 'field' recordings were made at actual weddings, bar-mitzvot, in
homes and other celebrations. Most of the selections are performed without
instrumental accompaniment except for a few at wedding ceremonies.

An especially unique selection (Disc 2, track 3) March is credited to
Mendel Brichot and his Daughters and was recorded at the dedication of a
private
home, which is not a traditional Chassidic event. From the Book: The
recording
proves conclusively that the prohibition on hearing a woman singing is not
understood in its strict sense in Chassidic society, but depends on
circumstances...He (Mendel) liked to sing the Sabbath table zemirot
together with them,
and only rarely were they asked not to join their father, or to sing along
with
him only 'sotto voce' .

This package is another in the series by The Jewish Music Research Center in
Jerusalem and as with all their recordings a true documentary of the rich
heritage of Jewish committees. A very important production.

Consisting of 2 CDs and hard cover 160 page booklet this is available from
Hatikvah Music, through the month of June, at $28.00 First Class shipping
included within the US with all Visa Mastercard orders.
Thank You
