RE: [ha-Safran]: Shulchan Shel Arbah

2005-02-23 Thread Marvin J. Heller
Shulhan shel Arba is a relatively popular work. It was printed six times in
the sixteenth century, in Constantinople and Mantua (1514), Venice (1546),
Cracow (1579), and in Lublin and Prague (1596). It is available today from
Mossad ha-Rav Kook in their Kitvei Rabbenu Bahya and likely elsewhere as well.

[ha-Safran]: Re: Tallis and tallis bag ca. late 1880's

2005-02-23 Thread KPeter3434
Thank you to all the people who responded to my message about the tallis
and tallis bag! It was suggested to me that the tallis was possibly used
by someone of German-Jewish descent, as those tallisim tend to be smaller
than what we would view as averaged sized today. It was also suggested
that I contact a museum and donate it for safekeeping. I have contacted
the Beck Archives of the Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society which is
affiliated with the Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Denver
and we will be donating it to them. I don't have their URL handy at the
moment, but they have a very lovely virtual exhibit of clothing, religious
objects, family and historical photographs and other memorabilia of the
Colorado Jewish community. I recommend it!

   Thanks again to all,

[ha-Safran]: I Don't get it?

2005-02-23 Thread Eli Wise
I would like to echo Glenn's comments. It seems to me that this line should
have a moderator that keeps discussion professional. It amazes me that
there should be such agony concerning a piece of rabbinical literature and
silence concerning the growth of interfaith titles. I realize that I have
been criticized about my opposition because of the demographic nature of
current Jewish life. Yes, there are many intermarried couples, children
with non-Jewish grandparents and the like. It seems to me that there are
more posts regarding this literature and the current incredibly judgmental
discussion about a citation in rabbinic literature. The people who comment
on this issue are coming from an almost agenda driven position. What is the
message of AJL, we encourage acceptance of interfaith issues and then give
crushing blows to rabbinic literature. One cannot use current ideas and
values to properly evaluate the words of the rabbis. Furthermore, the
respondents do not cite any commentary, contextual meanings, or even at the
least discuss the issue without rancor. The initial description of a
disturbing Talmud quotation demonstrates a value judgment on the quote. AJL
is supposed to be an organization that is inclusive of all Jewish groups,
it should not become a podium for destruction of our literature. You don't
have to agree, and you can even show your criticism, however to do so you
must be more than reactive to an isolated quote. I am also very surprised
that the leadership of the organization doesn't involve itself in these
issues. The rabbis teach us that silence is acquiescence. I can only
surmise that this clearly anti-tradition slant is tacitly approved by the
AJL leadership.

[ha-Safran]: I do get it, and it bothers me

2005-02-23 Thread Ted Koppel
Dr. Wise,

I've read and re-read your email, below. I absolutely respect the strength
and depth of your views, even if I disagree with some of them. Allow me to
address what I find objectionable in your email:

First, you call the discussion incredibly judgmental - as if people
thinking for themselves and arriving at their own decisions was some sort
of a sin. Perhaps you disagree - fine. But as a people we are educated to
analyze and judge. Would you label the discussion incredibly judgmental
if everyone agreed with you?

Second, and related, I object to the insinuation that simply because
someone does not share your views, they have an almost agenda-driven
position. Can you respect that I think for myself - and the results of
my thought might be disagreement with you? Why paint people with the broad
brush of conspiracy?

Finally, and perhaps most egregious, is your last sentence, which slanders
AJL leadership and membership. We are accused of things that are not true
because we have the temerity to not share all of your beliefs. That's not
right.

Respectfully,

Ted Koppel

Please note: I am purposely not commenting on the specific content of the
issue. I write to object to the way that you make your argument.

As Pope John Paul II just opined, it can all be blamed on the
