[ha-Safran]: Urge ALA Members:

2005-03-08 Thread ellen zyroff
AJL member Barbara Silverman is in the running for a
position as an ALA Council-at-Large.

I urge ALA members to vote for this smart and gracious
librarian, who cares mightily about libraries. I know
Barbara Silverman from her dedicated work in San Diego
at the Astor Library of the Lawrence Family JCC and
from her work on a variety of other book related
programs.

Barbara was on hand at the AJL conference in June 2004
to accept the AJL accreditation award for the Astor

conference in Oakland.

I highly recommend Barbara Silverman as an excellent
candidate for ALA Council. Please contact every ALA
member you know and urge them to support Barbara
Silverman's candidacy. Competition for these positions
is fierce and every vote counts.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Encyclopedia Judaica help --Encyclopedia Judaica

2005-03-08 Thread Marvin J. Heller
I am currently running the Encyclopedia Judaica on a Windows XP platform
with no difficulty. I have an older version, one that requries a hasp, and
it did not require any special steps beyond the normal instasllation when I
upgraded to XP. I also know individuals with a newer version of the EJ that
does not require a hasp running on XP and they too do not have any
problems. I can concur, however, that when support or assistance is needed
on other matters there is no one to talk to.

Dear Rita,

This is wonderful! What a wonderful way to remember Marcia. She would
have LOVED it. Please thank the Chapter for all of us at Maryland. We are
preparing a small memorial service for her, probably sometimes in late
April. We are also establishing a memorial fund in her name. The details

[ha-Safran]: Announcement: Judaica SACO Funnel Project

2005-03-08 Thread Heidi G. Lerner
Dear Safranim,

I would like to announce the formation of the Judaica SACO Funnel Project.
This project has been established to facilitate greater contribution of
subject headings relating to Jewish Studies and Hebraica for inclusion in
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).

This funnel project will provide a framework for proposing new subject
headings and LC class numbers required for cataloging, as well as needed
revisions to existing headings and numbers. Participants should have a
basic familiarity with the procedures and guidelines found in the
Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings (SCM H), LCSH, Free-Floating
Subdivisions: An Alphabetical Index, Subject Cataloging Manual:
Classification (SCM F), LC Classification, the MARC 21 Authority Format,
and standard reference sources.

Interest in becoming a participant in this funnel project should be
addressed to: Heidi Lerner, Coordinator, Judaica SACO Funnel Project at:

[ha-Safran]: Shekhinah

2005-03-08 Thread Erika Zeitz
Shalom Safranim--

Is there any evidence that any of you know of, of the Shekhinah being the
name of a Mesopotamian or Canaanite goddess?

I'm looking at Goddesses: A World of Myth and Magic, by Burleigh
Muten, (2003), published by Barefoot Books in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
It's a children's book and I'm annotating it for a class.

I tend to be curmudgeonly and nit-picky when it comes to certain things and
on page 63, she lists Shekinah (her spelling) as a Mesopotamian/Canaanite
goddess. I'll quote:
Shekinah is described in Hebrew lore as the mother of the
mysterious spirit world. She is the feminine part of all that exists.
Sometimes Shekinah is described as a door or gateway, a house or sacred
shrine. Sometimes she is portrayed as the tree of life that feeds all
beings. Girls and women continue to invoke Shekinah for guidance and
wisdom, and for her blessing.

1. Is there a source for this information?
2. I'm angry that the author does not list Shekinah as Jewish--what is this
Hebrew lore--besides Kabbalah?
3. Do we think of Shekhinah as a goddess or the presence of G-d?

What are your thoughts?

Todah rabbah,
Erika Zeitz, MLS Student, Youth Services Specialist librarian at Ohev
Sholom in Kansas.

[ha-Safran]: Encyclopedia Judaica help --Encyclopedia Judaica

2005-03-08 Thread Glenn Ferdman
 From our IT director...

We had a similar problem with EJ. We were installing EJ on a windows 2000
server with 1+ GB of RAM. After installing it, we tried running it and
continuously encountered a runtime error. After spending a lot of time back
and forth with the EJ staff, a consultant discovered the problem. EJ can
not run on more than 512 MB of RAM - so he created a registry fix that
assigns the program less memory space and since then EJ has been running
smoothly. My suspicion with your XP deployment is that you probably have
more than 512 MB of RAM. (Remember that in 1997 when the electronic EJ was
created, 512 MB of RAM was way more than anyone thought they would ever
need..)

I copied the fix from a .reg file that we used. I noticed from the registry
details that this tweak may need to be modified as the server we are using
is a terminal server.

Thank you,

Hi,
I have a patron who read a book in the late 1970s that she thinks was by
Elie Wiesel. It was about a young German soldier who was in hospital and
dying. He wanted to be forgiven for his role in the murder of Jews.
Someone on staff brought in a Jewish person to forgive him. The dialog
of the book then goes into the nature of forgiveness. If the soldier is
forgiven is it condoning what he did?
Anyway, I cannot find a Wiesel book that seems to be the right title.
(It may have the word 'sun' or 'sunrise' in the title but that is
stretching her memory a bit.) Any suggestions are appreciated!
Many thanks,
Cathy
Carter

[ha-Safran]: Competition for the Philip Taft Award

2005-03-08 Thread Arieh Lebowitz
28th Annual Competition for the Philip Taft Award

Location: United States / Prize Date: 2005-05-01

[Please see website at end of this message for details.]

Below is the announcement for the 28th annual competition for the Philip
Taft Award for the book determined to be the most outstanding contribution
to labor history, which I've just received via e-mail -- Arieh
Lebowitz [Please forward this as appropriate.]

The competition is open to any book (or books) published in 2004 relating
to the history of United States labor and carries with it an award of
$1,000. I invite your nomination of any and every eligible book for
consideration.

The prize committee defines labor history in a broad sense to include the
history of workers (free and unfree, organized and unorganized), their
institutions, and their workplaces, as well as scholarship that explores
the ways in which broader historical trends have shaped working-class life,
including but not limited to: immigration, slavery, community, the state, race,
gender, and ethnicity.

Below are the names and mailing address of Award Committee members. A copy
of each nominated book should be sent directly to each member of the Award
Committee at the address listed. I encourage you to make your nomination(s)
at your earliest convenience, but not later than MAY 1, 2005.

For further information, including guidelines and a list of all previous
prize winners, go to the web address provided below.

The co-winners of the 2004 Taft Award were Frank Tobias Higbie,
Indispensable Outcasts: Hobo Workers Community in the American Midwest,
1880-1930 (University of Illinois Press) and Robert Rodgers Korstad, Civil
Rights Unionism: Tobacco Workers the Struggle for Democracy in the

[ha-Safran]: Vote for Barbara Silverman

2005-03-08 Thread Roberta Berman
I totally agree with Ellen Zyroff in urging you to vote for Barbara
Silverman for a position as an ALA Council-at-Large.

I work with her at the Astor Judaica Library in La Jolla so I know
first-hand of her dedication, knowledge and enthusiasm when it comes to
libraries.

In addition to volunteering at the library, she helps the annual San Diego
Jewish Book Fair as a member of its Book Selection Committee which has the
all-important task of selecting the books that will be sold, and also as a
Book Maven, helping people choose books for purchase.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Patron request

2005-03-08 Thread Sherry Wasserman
Eileen,
I believe the book you are looking for is not by Wiesel but this one:

The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness by Simon
Wiesenthal.

Here is a description of it from Amazon:
While imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp, Simon Wiesenthal was taken
one day from his work detail to the bedside of a dying member of the SS.
Haunted by the crimes in which he had participated, the soldier wanted to
confess to--and obtain absolution from--a Jew. Faced with the choice between
compassion and justice, silence and truth, Wiesenthal said nothing. But even
years after the way had ended, he wondered: Had he done the right thing?
What would you have done in his place?

[ha-Safran]: Policy on lost and damaged materials

2005-03-08 Thread Lori Amchin
I need the advice of some experienced synagogue librarians.

Recently, a member returned a videotape with the tape pulled out and
twisted. The videotape is obviously damaged and unusable. I remembered
that the same person had previously returned another videotape damaged. So
now I have to wonder if her VCR is damaging the videotapes. Should I ask
her to refrain from borrowing any more videotapes? And the broader
question -- do other synagogue libraries hold members responsible for lost
materials?

Our policy regarding overdue books is to send a gentle letter which asks
if the borrower would check to see if they have the books; there is a line
in the letter which says there are no overdue fines and if you want to pay
for lost books, a donation can be made to the Library Fund.

Thanks in advance for any comments. I will bring your suggestions to the
board to help us clarify our policy.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Shekhinah

2005-03-08 Thread Sherry Wasserman
Erika,
There is a new book out:
Tree of Souls: The Mythology of Judaism -- by Howard Schwartz,

I believe that it has a large section devoted to tales about the Shekhinah.
Try looking in it to find out if there are Jewish tales that support the
quote you cited.

[ha-Safran]: Barbara Silverman for ALA Council

2005-03-08 Thread ellen zyroff
The subject line I submitted on my posting last night
got so highly truncated when it appeared, that the
meaning was lost. The subject I posted was:
Urge ALA Members: Barbara Silverman for ALA
Councilor-at-Large.

Perhaps there is software operating automatically on
postings that cuts off everything on a subject line
after a colon, even if the colon appears after only
three short words. I didn't anticipate such an
occurrence.

Ha'Safran friends, I am concerned that a portion of
readers skipped the message last night because of the
unclear subject line. I have reposted my message
below, because it contains Barbara's CV.

Thanks for your patience and consideration.
___

AJL member Barbara Silverman is in the running for a
position as an ALA Councilor-at-Large.

Library and she plans to attend this year's AJL
conference in Oakland.

I highly recommend Barbara Silverman as an excellent
candidate for ALA Council. Please contact every ALA
member you know and urge them to support Barbara
Silverman's candidacy. Competition for these positions
is fierce and every vote counts.
