Dear Safranim,

Several years ago K.G. Saur announced that they were making avaialble
online the microfiche edition of the Jewish Biographical Archive.
Do you know if it is yet available and have any of your institutions
purchased it. I know that many of us have access to the World
Biographical Index but I am interested in knowing the status of the
entire collection.

[ha-Safran]: The Jews of Windsor 1790-1990

2007-05-21 Thread cheryl . jaffee
I have been asked by Rabbi Jonathan Plaut to bring this new book to
your attention:

THE JEWS OF WINDSOR
1790-1990
A HISTORICAL CHRONICLE
BY JONATHAN V. PLAUT

Beginning with the first Jewish settler, Moses David, the important
role that Windsor Jews played in the development of Ontario's south
is mirrored in this 200-year chronicle. The founding pioneer families
transformed their Eastern European shetl into a North American
settlement; many individuals were involved in establishing
synagogues, schools, and an organized communal structure in spite of
divergent religious, political, and economical interests.

Modernity and the growing influences of Zionism and
Conservative/Reform Judaism challenged the traditional and leftist
leanings of the community's founders. From the outset, Jews were
represented in city council, actively involved in communal
organization, and appointed to judicial posts. While its Jewish
population was small, Windsor boasted Canada's first Jewish Cabinet
members, provincially and federally, in David Croll and Herb Gray. As
the new millennium approached, Jews faced shrinking numbers, forcing
major consolidations in order to ensure their survival.

Rabbi Jonathan V. Plaut received his ordination in 1970 from Hebrew
Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he earned a Doctor of Hebrew
Letters in 1977. He served Congregation Beth El in Windsor, Ontario
from 1970 to 1984, and was the Senior Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El in San
Jose, California from 1985 to 1993. Returning to the Detroit area in
1993, he became engaged in many non-profit fundraising projects as
well as serving congregations needing part-time rabbinic services. He
led Congregation Beth El in Traverse City, Michigan from 1999 to
2004, where he is now Rabbi Emeritus, and, since 2000, has also been
the spiritual leader of Temple Beth Israel in Jackson, Michigan. A
driving force in many civic and religious organizations during his
career, Rabbi Plaut and his wife, Carol, have two married children
and two
grandsons.

[ha-Safran]: Shavuot on the J Site and 65 Shavuot Hotsites

2007-05-21 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Shavuot is the Jewish holiday that celebrates the giving
of the Torah, the first harvest, and the ripening of the
first fruits. The two day festival (1 day in Israel) begins
on Tuesday night, May 22, 2007.

The J Site - Jewish Education and Entertainment

http://www.j.co.il

has several entertaining features to celebrate Shavuot:

Jewish Trivia Quiz: Shavuot

What are the five names of Shavuot ?
On what mountain did Moses receive the Ten Commandments ?
How many letters are there in the Torah ?
In the days of the Temple what did people do on Shavuot ?
Who married Ruth ?
Who was Ruth the great-grandmother of ?
What is the connection between the number 7 and Shavuot ?

The above questions are examples from the multiple choice
Flash quiz. There are two levels of questions, two timer settings.
Both kids and adults will find it enjoyable.

Additional Shavuot resources and games on the J site include:
Free Shavuot Clipart
The Multilingual Hangman Game (English / Hebrew)
The Multilingual Word Search Game (English / Hebrew / Russian)
My Jewish Coloring Book (online / offline)

The J site has something for everyone, but if that is not
enough, I posted on my website 65 links about Shavuot,
from laws and customs to games and recipes.
Site languages include English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish,
French, Portuguese and German.
All 65 links have been reviewed / checked this week.

The web address is:

http://www.jr.co.il/hotsites/j-hdaysh.htm

Please forward this message to relatives and friends,
so they can also benefit from these holiday resources.

Chag Sameach!
Jacob

2007-05-21 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

This week there were two parades in Jerusalem in honor
of the 40th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem.

The first parade was the Regional Councils Salute to
Jerusalem Parade. This took place on Tuesday night, May 15,
on the eve of Jerusalem day. I took pictures of this parade on
Yaffo Street starting around 6pm.

The second parade was the Jerusalem Flag march which
started a little late due to rain. This took place on Wednesday, May 16,
Jerusalem Day. I took pictures of the march on Yaffo Street, in the old
city and at the Kotel (Western Wall).

I posted 585 (yes - 585) pictures of the festive events on my website at:

[ha-Safran]: Replacing book cards with....

2007-05-21 Thread Talya Pardo
Hi,
We are an automated elementary school library. We were thinking of
eliminating book cards this year. However, our Kindergarten and Pre-K
classes still use the book cards to sign out their books within the
classroom.
Does anyone have any ideas to an alternative that we can offer so we can
do this across the board? The kindergarten teacher would like to still
find a way to use the individualized pockets that were created for each
student.

[ha-Safran]: Israeli children's author available in November

2007-05-21 Thread Lisa Silverman
This is posted on behalf of Sharona Tel Oren:

Shalom,My name is Sharona Tel-Oren and I am the daughter of the late
Hebrew poet/author Abraham Regelson (a recipient of notable literary
awards), whose well-loved 1935 classic Masa HaBubot l'Eretz-Israel (based
on the adventures and hardships of my family's aliyah in 1933) delighted a
whole generation of readers, young and old.

Today a great-grandma living in Israel's Negev, I'm the heroine of the book
-- the original dolls' Imma. Not long ago, I translated the book into
English (The Dolls' Journey to Eretz-Israel), as well as republished it
in the original Hebrew. My lecture/presentation, A Historic Tale of a
Unique Aliyah, has been given all over Israel in either Hebrew or English
to adults' groups and/or to children over 6, before schools, synagogues,
retirement centers, AACI/Hadassah/WIZO and ESRA groups, libraries,
bookshops, community centers, and recently at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem
-- everywhere received enthusiastically by audiences that find it both
entertaining and informative.

I plan on visiting the US this November, and will be happy to accept
invitations to speak before your audience. Cities I plan on visiting
(subject to change): NY (early in November), Boston, Toronto, Cleveland,
Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, San Francisco and LA (late November to early
December).

Here is a short synopis of the book:

When her parents decided to move from Cleveland to pre-State Eretz-Israel in
1933, three-year-old Sharona had to leave her dolls behind with her friend
Phyllis. But the dolls, yearning for their Imma -- her songs, stories, and
Sabbath table -- were determined to join her, and set out on the journey by
land, sea and air to reunite with their beloved Imma. Through the medium of
a doll-fantasy, the author describes what aliyah was like in those days, how
people lived then in the young Jewish city of Tel-Aviv, how they spoke, and
what they felt about their ancestral homeland.

Self-published in Israel with Biblio International, and available in
softcover through Amazon or Baker/Taylor [a hardcover library edition is
available on order only directly through me], this lively historical book
effectively inspires the reader with Jewish identity and love for Israel. It
was included in the Israel Ministry of Education's Parade of Books 2006/7
project to foster quality reading for the young.

For background, excerpts, reviews, readers' comments, audience reactions,
and a 2-minute film with lecture preview, please visit

For additional details you may contact me directly.

Thank you for your attention. Your speedy response will enable me to plan
my trip accordingly.
Sincerely,
Sharona Tel-Oren
