[ha-Safran]: Jewish Books in Braille and TTY Machines

2007-05-29 Thread Ben Pastcan
Chag Sameach Safranim,
I was wondering if any of you knew any resources for buying
Jewish books in braille for elementary school students (infancy
through sixth grade). I also want to know which one of your
libraries has a TTY machine for elementary school students to use and
how you went about purchasing one. If you could respond to these
questions off of the discussion board for me, that would be
helpful. I would like to know these answers soon because I am
starting to create a Judaica library for a private Jewish day school.

Todah Rabbah,
Ben Pastcan

The Bride Who Argued With God is a lavish anthology of mostly
unknown tales recorded from immigrants to Israel by Israel Folktale
Archives of the University of Haifa. Compiled, retold and newly
translated by Hava Ben-Zvi, these timeless stories highlight the
theme of human relationships, focusing on the role and position of
women in the family and community. Most of these stories have not
been translated into English before.
An excellent source for elementary, middle and high schools, public
and university libraries, study groups and clubs. The detailed source
notes, bibliography and indices of parallel tales in other cultures
will benefit scholars.
In the words of the critics:

The wide range of settings: Morocco, Poland, Persia, Tunisia,
Israel, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Iraq and more-admirably reflects the
remarkable diversity of the Jewish diaspora… An important piece of
public history.
-Kirkus Discoveries

A remarkably rich collection of folktales, legends, Hasidic, …
andTalmudic lore from all corners of the Jewish world… we learn so
much about the many- hued traditions of Judaism, its customs, its
mode of perception… a book for scholars as well…
- Dr. Miriyam Glazer, University of Judaism, Los Angeles

… a delightfully engaging anthology, and the theme of love and
relationships is very pertinent to my middle school students. The
work is scholarly, authoritative, wide in scope… Most importantly, it
is just fun to read! My school library colleagues in elementary
through high school will find it a valuable addition to their
folktale collection.
 -Betsy Kahn,
School Librarian

The richest and most resonant tales from…Jewish literature and
folklore… illuminating annotations… But the real glory is the sheer
pleasure of hearing a tale well told… Truly, a book of light.
-Jonathan Kirsch, author of A History of the End of the World

A rich and rewarding read… Impressive scholarship.
   -Kay Haugaard,
Pasadena City College

The Bride Who Argued With God is like a box of old-fashioned
sweets, some sweet, some salty. The tales taste of love, resilience
and dark humor. The book will help scholars…
-Irene E. McDermott, Reference Librarian, San Marino Public Library.
Author of The
Librarian's internet Survival Guide

The major themes of Jewish life continue to be important -even in
our complex modernity- but the hopes and longings expressed in these
tales continue to perplex the modern Jew, while the stories about
these hopes and longings can delight the Jewish and general reader alike.
-Rabbi William Cutter, Ph.D. Director, Kalsman Institute on Judaism
and Health. Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Los Angeles

The Bride Who Argued With God is a wonderful collection of Jewish
folktales that brings alive the hopes and dreams, fears and struggles
of a people through the retelling of its stories… Ben-Zvi's notes at
the conclusion of each story make it accessible even for the novice
reader of Jewish folk literature.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
JOE BOBKER was born in 1947 in Ulm, a displaced persons' camp in
Germany, to Polish Holocaust survivors Chaskel, ztl, and Ida Bobker. On
May 21, 1949, the family arrived in Sydney, Australia, as Holocaust
refugees. Joe Bobker received his early Jewisheducation in an
after-school cheder witha handful of other boys from Holocaust homes.
His teachers, Rav Hertz and Rav Barzel, werefl own in especially from
B'nei Brak to teach Torah tothe handful of children of survivors.

Joe's main mentor was HaRav Osher Abramson, zt l, also a Holocaust
survivor. After graduating from the University of New South Wales, Joe
Bobker pursued his Judaic studies at the famed Mercaz HaRav Kook
Yeshivain Kiryat Moshe, Jerusalem. Over the years he has spoken
frequently and written hundreds of articles about Jews and Judaism for a
variety of newspapers - including the 100-year-old Los Angeles Jewish
Times, of which he is Publisher and Editor-in-Chief.

His work covers a wide variety of Jewish subjects from a very personal,
philosophical - and often whimsical - perspective. Since 1980, he has
lived in Los Angeles and New York with his wife Miriam, a barrister from
Melbourne and herself a child of Holocaust survivors, Baruch, ztl, and
Rivka Cohn. When asked whatacts as his inspiration, Joe replied, Eli,
Avi, Benny, Dovi, Hadassa, Baylie, Layella, Devorah, Dalia, Toby,
Chesky, Yoni, Baruch, Ze'evi, Mattie, Mordechai, Henny, Dovid, Shira and
Osher - my sons, daughters-in-law, granddaughters and grandsons [as of
Chanukah, 2006].

2007-05-29 Thread Leah Orent
Dear subscriber to Hasafran,

I would like to inform you about an innovative and unique book of
commentaries on the Pentateuch: Deot al Parashat ha-Shavua. (in Hebrew)
The author Yeshayau Yarnitski, is a Prof. of mechanical engineering
in the Haifa Technion. He introduces a contemporary modern point of
view, which includes Jewish and non-Jewish philosophers and mystics.
The book was praised by Israeli academia and journalists: Prof.
Wolfensohn, Yair Harlap, Nethaniel Lifshits and others. It is
important to include such a book in your Judaica collection.

  Sincerely

[ha-Safran]: Stumper

2007-05-29 Thread Susan Ellman
Can anyone help me identify this book?

A patron is looking for a specific book about being Jewish which someone
once lent her, and she cannot remember either the title or the author's
name. She says it emphasizes the social (community, family, etc., perhaps
ethical or political?) aspects of Jewish life rather than the religious
aspects. The title is something humorous or light hearted, and she thinks
it was a book which might be in the library collection of a Reform
congregation, but probably not an Orthodox one. She says it was written for
adults but that it was relatively easy to read. She has tried two major
booksellers and has looked on line.

From her description, it sounded as if it could be one of thousands of
books, except for two limiting descriptors:

1. It was published some time prior to 2003, because the patron read it
four or five years ago, perhaps in paperback.

2. The author or the publisher was from Minnesota.

I would appreciate any information which could lead to the identification of
this book, including advice on how to refine my searching skills.

AJLniks,

A couple of months ago, Ben Yehuda Press took out an ad in the AJL
newsletter... and received a disappointing response. In fact, an
extremely disappointing response: Nobody even looked up the web site
with special offers for the AJL.

I'd like to ask for some feedback from members of the list on the ad.
(You can find it on page 39 of the February/March AJL Newsletter. Or
you can see a copy online at
http://benyehudapress.com/offers/ajl/200702.html)

In return for your attention, we're going to extend the special offers
we set up to accompany the ad. The offers include discounts of up to
36% on our titles, and, frankly, with the new postage rates, we're not
going to offer those discounts again.

Comments on the ad can be sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for your attention,
