Re: [ha-Safran]: next q: signed books

2007-11-12 Thread Ted Koppel
Patricia,

The bottom line question is this: do you want your books to be used?
Or do you want them in some locked up collection, protected from all
but the most persistent user? Are you a library or a museum?

Unless there is some intrinsic value to that signed items ( and from
what you wrote, that does not seem to be the case) then the books
should be on the shelf so that anyone can circulate them. Wiesel
wrote his books so that people can read them, not so they can be hidden away/

Re: [ha-Safran]: Libraries do make a difference

2007-11-12 Thread Ted Koppel
All,

I think it is timely that this issue arises - it shows up like
clockwork about once a year and it's good to discuss it gain.

A couple of observations:

1) Librarians talking to librarians is not likely to produce
sustainable funding for synagogue libraries

2) Librarians talking to educators/rabbis is only slightly more
likely to be successful. (Same issue as we have all identified -
after the heating bill and paving for the parking lot, there's no money left)

3) Congregants/members talking to librarians is not likely to produce
funding. Because that has to be followed by (2, above) which leads
to a dead end.

4) Congregants/members talking to rabbis, synagogue machers, and the
power centers in the library are somewhat more likely.

The big picture, in my opinion, is that the money allocators in the
synagogue are far more likely to listen to the dues-paying members
than the librarians. This may not be a politically correct thing
thing to say on HaSafran, but I think it's true. So the strategy
ought to be to mobilize the members (and the members' kids).

As for the idea of an endowment - it's an interesting thought, but I
wonder about how (practically) it would work. TO be nationally
useful, it would need to be decentralized so that libraries anywhere
could benefit. But decentralization has its own costs in terms of
administration and quality control. Once we have the big chunk of
endowment funding (!) we can work out these issues.

2007-11-12 Thread Abigail Yasgur
Keep speaking, a film is good, spread the word, etc. but from my
perspective nothing beats just being out there (if you've got the
personality for it, to push the Library agenda) it means networking
and collaborating and building relationships with many other
institutions so they notice when you are NOT at the table.
It has to mean being willing to explore a future without books and
libraries as we know them, because that idea is on the table.

We, AJL, should consider working with a strategic thinker/planner on
Jewish communal organizations, to develop a plan for positioning.
I think there is much to learn from nextbook, jewish book council,
let's speak with the christian org. and the catholic libraries, and others.

Loose pages may be repaired with glue or Japanese paper. A 1902
siddur may not be worth a full conservation effort.

2007-11-12 Thread Rettberg, Dan
They may not be rare now, but what will be their status in fifty
years? It's always a balancing act for libraries comparing the needs
of today versus the needs of tomorrow. My inclination would be to put
these in Special Collections and to buy additional copies for the
circulating shelves.

[ha-Safran]: Jewish self-study curriculum for kids

2007-11-12 Thread R Polsky
Hi,

A teacher asked me about a self-study curriculum to be implemented in
a wide range of Jewish schools throughout the Chicago area. The range
includes Orthodox schools through Reform schools, along with Hebrew
schools (children who have a limited Jewish background).

He wanted the program to be on a topic or several topics in Judaism
that kids may not have had a chance learning about in a meaningful
way/depth (or breadth) in school.
ie: The Taryag Mitzvos, Ten Commandments, Ani Ma'amin (13 Principles
of Faith), facts about the Avos or Imahos (Patriarchs or Matriarchs), etc.

I was thinking of The Taryag Mitzvah Project of The Taryag Legacy
Foundation. The only problem is that it is mainly geared toward kids
who have had an Orthodox education and is not a self-study program
(the teacher has a large part in implementing this program).

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks!
