[ha-Safran]: What Does the Shema Really Mean?

2007-11-26 Thread Sergiu S. Simmel
Dear Friends,

How many times have you said or heard the Shema in your
lifetime? A few? Hundreds? Thousands? Maybe even tens of
thousands... But what does it really mean?

Why has the Shema become the center piece of Jewish
 liturgy?

How do the 6 words of the Shema, the 6 words of the
blessing formula (Barukh Ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh
HaOlam), and the 6 words of the Rabbinic insert (Barukh
Shem K'vod Malkhuto l'Olam va'ed) relate to each other?

What is the literary meaning of the opening verse You
shall Love is, and how it relates to the rest of the
 Shema's first paragraph?

Does the Shema really command us to love?

What does the oneness of the divine has to do with love?

If the Shema has been puzzling to you or even if think you know
it well, this interactive, live session with Brandeis Professor
and Master Teacher Reuven Kimelman is for you.

Date: Tuesday November 27, 2007
Time: 9 PM Eastern / 6 PM Pacific

RE: [ha-Safran]: Movie classification

2007-11-26 Thread Bernstein, Steven (Library)
While we're on the topic of movies. I've been looking for quite some
time for a recording of a television show that some of you may recall
titled Brooklyn Bridge http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101055/. It was
produced by Gary David Goldberg (Family Ties, Spin City) and aired
from 1991 to 1993 on CBS. The series followed the life of Alan Silver,
a 14 year-old Jewish boy and his extended family who lived in Brooklyn
in the 1950's. What was great about this show was that it was genuinely
Jewish (if I recall correctly, there was an episode set during Sukot)
yet was accessible and enjoyable to the non-Jewish world as well because
of the diversity of the supporting characters (Alan's teacher is black;
much to the chagrin of his grandmother, he dates an Irish Catholic girl
named Katie Monahan). It really showed how much of a salad bowl
Brooklyn--and by extension--America is. Although the series was lauded
by the critics (it won a total of 12 Emmy Awards in its two-season run)
it didn't find its groove with audiences due in part to the fact that
CBS initially aired it on Friday nights and when petitioned by the
Jewish community to move it to a different time slot, continually
rescheduled it to different nights of the week. The end result is that
this series has been all but forgotten. I would love to find a copy of
this entire series on DVD (though I would settle for VHS). There are a
few scam sites that can be found that sell bootlegged copies of the
series (tvaddicts.tv, to name one) on DVD, but as of yet Paramount
Television has not officially released the series on VHS or DVD. If
anyone knows where I can find a legitimate copy of this series, please
let me know. Although my search for the show is purely personal, I have
no doubt in my mind that this show would make an excellent addition to
any Jewish library.

News:

We are pleased to announce that the National Endowment for the
Humanities has invited us to conduct the Institute on Venice, the
Jews, and Italian Culture: Historical Eras and Cultural
Representations again next summer. The Institute will be held in
Venice from June 16–July 18, 2008. The application deadline is March 3, 2008.

College and university teachers of American undergraduate students
are invited to apply. Qualified independent scholars and those
employed by museums, libraries, historical societies, and other
organizations may be eligible for consideration as well, provided
they can effectively advance the teaching and research goals of the
institute. Participants will receive a stipend from the NEH towards
their expenses.

Brief Description:

College and University teachers are invited to participate in this
five-week, inter-disciplinary institute exploring the cultural,
intellectual, and historic experience of Venetian Jewry. Participants
will receive a stipend from the NEH towards their expenses. Our
primary focus will be the Ghetto of Venice, which gave its name to
all such subsequent ethnic enclosures. We will explore the history of
the Ghetto of Venice as built environment, cultural text, and
symbolic site. Together we will examine various artistic materials
representing Italian and Venetian Jewish life, including literary,
artistic, and dramatic works. This will make it possible for us to
reinhabit the Ghetto through the eras of its existence. The Institute
will begin with the Renaissance, while emphasizing the modern
experience of Venetian Jewry, a paradigmatic Italian Jewish
community. The program is designed to benefit scholars in various
fields, including European culture, literature, art, and history,
Holocaust studies, Italian studies, and Jewish studies.

Documentary, 54 min., 2001 (Hebrew with English subtitles)

Directed and produced by: Duki Dror, Zygote Films Ltd.

Synopsis

The three Darwish brothers, who immigrated from Iraq to Israel in the
50*s, established the family factory *Fantasia* - a menorah
factory. For a time period of 50 years they designed, manufactured and
shipped Chanukah menorahs for the entire world and now*the family
factory is about to close down.

From this point in time, the director, who is the son of the youngest
brother, is starting to embark on a journey that unravels the history of
his family, going back 100 years. The story weaves memories from Iraq
and Israel - two homelands, two languages, two identities, two enemies.
The director is trying to reconstruct the narrative of his family, a
narrative that has disappeared in the silence and shame that followed
the family move to Israel. The father*s silence is finally broken by
the director*s relentless inquiries, which reveal a story about 5 lost
years of his father in the Iraqi prison.

It is a diary film shot over a period of 10 years.

*My parents generation is longing for their old country - Iraq but at
the same time they hate it. They are foreign to mainstream Israeli
culture but they want their kids to assimilate. Growing up in this
paradox, I was expected to become a proud Sabra exemplar. I assume that
I failed.*Duki Dror

The Jerusalem Post
Lighting up the darkness
By Aryeh Dean Cohen

Sometime this week, the lights will go out for the last time at the
Fantasia hanukkiya factory in south Tel Aviv - its careful, loving
workmanship replaced by cheaper, faster factories abroad after 50 years.

But though the process of closing the shop marks an end of an era for
Aboudi Darwish (Dror), one of three Iraqi immigrants who founded the
factory, it also helped him and his filmmaker son, Duki, cast a
different light on both father and son's experiences as immigrants in a
new land.

Duki Dror's documentary My Fantasia, is not so much about tracing the
family history from its origins in Iraq to its arrival here in the
1950s, as about seeking to resolve what he calls certain matters in my
life that remained unresolved. The main thing that was driving me... was
to resolve this issue of why I feel like a stranger in Israel, why I ran
away to the US and lived there for nine years, and why my father felt
like there was nothing worth fighting for.

Finding himself in California and then Chicago, Dror got a helping hand
with his project from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and Operation
Desert Storm, which helped stir thoughts about his family's roots. A
trip home for a family wedding, the events in the Gulf, and his wife
Galia's desire to return, finally took Dror back to the cramped
hanukkiya factory and the past, parts of which had remained an unsolved
mystery for him for years.

Dror had seen a picture of his father in jail in Iraq, a skinny man
alongside two others, their feet in chains, but never knew why. There
were rumors of some criminal activity, but the proud,

[ha-Safran]: JNUL becomes National Library of Israel

2007-11-26 Thread elhanan
Yesterday (Nov. 26th) the Knesset passed the National Library Law
which formally establishes a National Library of Israel.

While the Jewish National and University Library has served as the de
facto national library (of the Jewish People since the early 1900s and
of the State of Israel since its establishment) it has formally been
an administrative unit of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The new law, which goes into force on January first, provides that
the Library will first become a semi-independent unit of the Hebrew
University, with independent financial systems and fund raising.
Subsequently, within a period of three years, the Library will become
fully independent.

The Library's new name will be ha-sifriyah ha-le'umit (The National
Library of Israel). It's mandate is to serve as the national library
of both Israel and the Jewish People, as well as continuing to be a
general humanities research library for both the Hebrew University and
other scholars.

The Library's funding will now be primarily directly from the
State, although the Hebrew University will continue to contribute part
of the budget.

As a result of this change, the Library's budget is expected to
increase significantly, and the planning of a new building, the
contribution of Yad Hanadiv Foundation, is underway.

The law emphasizes the role of the Library in using technology to make
its collections accessible, and specifically authorizes the library to
archive and preserve the Israeli Internet domain.
