[ha-Safran]: Roommate

2009-06-15 Thread malka9
Hi folks,

My second roommate arrangement has also fallen through. :-(

So I'm again looking for a female roommate for convention. I'm
arriving on the 4th and staying until Friday, the 10th, but I realize
most people are staying for the convention days/nights only, which is fine.

'Hope to hear from somebody. :-)

When I registered to the CEU, the first timers session was not on the

On another note, could someone please explain what the Digitization

[ha-Safran]: Reference question

2009-06-15 Thread Yael and Monty Penkower
Dear safranim,
I am trying to locate the full time in Hebrew of an article and a
book. The author is Haim Peles, and the article is about how Agudas
Israel viewed settlement in Eretz Israel during the years 1912-1923.
This article appeared in a volume, edited by Shmuel Ettinger, whose
Hebrew title translates as A Nation and its History. The volume
appeared as part 2 of a publication that was published in Jerusalem
in 1984. Any detailed information would be appreciated.

[ha-Safran]: New Holocaust memoir

2009-06-15 Thread Aviva Astrinsky
New Book: My Children, My Heroes: Memoirs of a Holocaust Mother,
By Sonia Minuskin, Translated and Annotated by Her Son, Harold Minuskin

This is a powerful story of survival. My mother not only saved her
own life, but also
the lives of her two very young children. She eluded the first
roundup and slaughter of
Jews in our town in Byelorussia, near the Polish border. Then she hid
herself and her
children to evade the German murderers when the final liquidation took place.
Miraculously, she avoided capture and fled with my infant brother and me into
the nearby forests of Byelorussia, where she joined up with the
Jewish Partisans.
My father, a Partisan fighter, participated in many battles and acts
of sabotage
against the Germans. We lived day-to-day for nearly three years,
hunted and hungry,
until our liberation by the Russian army in 1944.

The book costs $23, including shipping and handling.
To order send an email to mincons...@yahoo.com ..

[ha-Safran]: Israeli Book Statistic - Hebrew Book Week 2009

2009-06-15 Thread Noa Fink
Israeli Book Statistic – Hebrew Book Week 2009

The Hebrew Book Week 2009 will take place in Israel on June 10-20
June. Towards this event the National Library of Israel reports
annual data about books published in Israel during 2008.

The National Library of Israel is the deposit library of Israel, and
receives, according to the Books Act, two copies of each book,
journal, cassette or disk published in Israel.

During the previous year 7,414 new Israeli titles were registered by
the Legal Deposit Department:6,384 books, 650 new periodicals, and
380 non-print titles, such as CDs and cassettes.

In additions, 15,806 issues of current periodicals were received in
the library. The Library's catalogue is the most comprehensive in
Israel, and includes the vast majority of the titles published in Israel.

During the last year the National Library of Israel has added to its
database of Israeli publishers information on publishers from the
earliest days of Zionist history.

So far some 130 publishers, who have ceased to be active, have been
listed and documented. The database is a rich source of information
on the history of publishing in Israel.

Its importance derives not only from the national and historic
perspective, but also from its practical value.

It maps the copyright of works that appeared in the Land of Israel
and makes it possible to locate copyright holders and heirs to
publishers no longer in existence
(http://jnul.huji.ac.il/heb/lgd-publishers.html (.

[ha-Safran]: JPS Suggested Authors for Jewish Book Fairs and More

2009-06-15 Thread Anita Bihovsky
JPS has a full roster of authors who lecture around the country,
ideal for Jewish Book Month and other speaking engagements. Here are
some of our featured authors:

Ellen Frankel

Imagine the Hebrew Bible as a child's favorite storybook! The new JPS
Illustrated Children's Bible, by acclaimed storyteller and Jewish
scholar Ellen Frankel, is sure to earn a special place in the hearts
of young readers in this marvelous retelling of 53 Bible tales.
Dramatic full-page color illustrations by award-winning artist Avi
Katz further ignite young imaginations. The CEO and editor-in-chief
of JPS and an accomplished speaker, Frankel has published eight other
booksand captivates audiences of all ages.

Josh Lambert

Read any good books lately? Josh Lambert has read hundreds, and his
American Jewish Fiction: A JPS Guide is the go-to book for individual
readers and Jewish book club members seeking ideas on what to read
next. Lambert is an engaging speaker in his own right and can
moderate panel discussions with fiction authors or run special
sessions for book club members and coordinators.

Arie Kaplan

Arie Kaplan's popular full-color book, From Krakow to Krypton: Jews
and Comic Books, explores the significant role that American Jews and
Jewish culture have played in the comics industry. Kaplan, a comic
book writer and comedian, is a dynamic, entertaining speaker who
presents regularly to children, teens and adults around the country.

Reuven Firestone

What does the Qur'an really say about Jews? Why is Jerusalem so
important to Muslims? In An Introduction to Islam for Jews, Reuven
Firestone presents a comprehensive introduction to Islam from a
Jewish perspective. Firestone, who spent a year in Cairo on a
Fulbright Fellowship, addresses questions of particular interest to
Jewish audiences and has attracted major attention as a speaker
nationally and internationally.

Maggie Anton

Author of the award-winning Rashi's Daughters series, Maggie Anton
has tailored Book 1: Joheved to a younger audience in her JPS book
Rashi's Daughter: Secret Scholar, appropriate for ages 10 and up. A
popular speaker, Maggie Anton is an ideal choice for teens, women's
groups, and mother-daughter brunches.

Vivian Grey

Spy or baseball star? Moe Berg: The Spy Behind Home Plate, a
biography for young adults byVivian Grey, looks at one of baseball's
most intriguing heroes. Grey's animated talks are geared to children,
young adults and adults.

A complete list of the JPS Speakers Bureau is available online at
http://www.jewishpub.org/author.php.

I just wanted to add that authors Ellen Frankel and Josh Lambert are
part of the Jewish Book Council's NETWORK for Jewish Book
Month. They are still available to speak at non-participating
venues, but arrangements would be made through me and not JBC.

[ha-Safran]: T'shuvah

2009-06-15 Thread Amalia Warshenbrot
Shalom.

I need your help. I do not have an access to a local library at this time.
I hope that many of you can make copies from books and mail me or
direct me to a good sight on the subject of T'shuvah (Repentance). We
are especially looking for material for discussion with our Catholic friends.
The material can be in Hebrew or English. If you prefer to give it
to me at the convention I will be happy to thank you in person.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

P.S.

Hi,
Sorry to bother you again. I did not make myself clear in my question
about T'shuvah. I do not need material that can be easily found by
googling. I prefer texts and, especially, material for comparative religions.
Thanks you Sara Spiegel for your help so far. How could I forget the
new service Takeaway ?

[ha-Safran]: Vague book query

2009-06-15 Thread Steven M. Bergson
I received the following reference question via the Jewish Comics
blog I maintain. I don't have an answer for the poster, but - since
it is about a book, specifcally - I thought I'd repeat the query to the list.

This may seem strange, but I'm hoping you (or someone who reads this
blog) can help me. I'm on the hunt for a book my family had when I
was a child. Unfortunately, I don't know the book or author. It was a
book of four-panel comics, each talking about how a different Jewish
sect would deal with or feel about any given topic. For example, if
it was about dating, it would be the Orthodox, Conservative, Reform,
and I *think* Reconstructionist opinions / responses / whatever about
dating. I know this is rather vague, but I'm hopeful. I haven't seen
the book in about 15 years, but I'd know it if I saw it. It's
probably from pre-1990, but I could be wrong. Any ideas?

[ha-Safran]: New web-exhibition: Jews, Commerce, and Culture

2009-06-15 Thread Arthur Kiron
Dear Safranim:

The Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the
University of Pennsylvania in partnership with the Penn Libraries
have just launched their 2008-09 web exhibition: *Jews, Commerce,
and Culture*. The exhibit highlights the Fellows' year-long effort
to understand the relationship between Jewish economic and cultural
activities within the historical contexts in which they've lived. As
Jonathan Karp has written in his introduction to the exhibition, The
emphasis on commerce aimed to defuse apologetics by confronting the
most controversial feature of the Jews' economic past head on. Here
the overarching question was whether and how commerce can serve as a
useful category for linking local Jewish communities and events
across a wide geographical and chronological expanse. At the same
time, the prominence in the title given to culture was meant to
underscore the truth that economics is not solely materialist and
quantitative in nature but is rather an integral part of the larger
fabric of Jewish religion and folkways.

To view this on-line exhibition, go to:

http://www.library.upenn.edu/exhibits/cajs/fellows09/

Thanks,

Arthur

Dear Friends,
For a paper I have been working on I have
prepared a short survey (Fifteen questions and a request for general
feedback). The purpose of my inquiry is to gather information about
the state of relations between Jewish Libraries and their local new
Jewish bookselling counterparts. I can email a copy of the
questionnaire or conduct the survey on the phone. Please reply by
email with a request for a copy of the form or with your phone number
and a time that would be convenient for me to reach you. This survey
should take about 5-15 minutes unless you have additional comments
that you would want to add. I am interested in hearing from you even
if you have no local new Jewish bookstore or if there is but you do
not have any relationship with them (though the survey would be much
abbreviated). Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

[ha-Safran]: Looking for a book

2009-06-15 Thread Amy Kaplan
Hello all,

A few weeks ago I posted the following request:

A patron is looking for a book – he describes it as follows:
Unfortunately I can't remember either the title or the author's
name. The novel must have been written in the 50s. It was set in
Israel shortly after the War of Independence. It's about a young boy
and his Mom dealing with the death of the father/husband who was
killed and branded a traitor for collaborating with the Brits. As
the story unfolds, or as you come to realize at the end, he actually
was a hero and had been working undercover.

I received several replies suggesting Panther in the Basement by Amos
Oz, which is not the book the patron wants. He is looking for
something published at least 40 years ago.

As some respondents indicated, the book is a fictional account of the
Meir Tobianski affair.

Just in case you missed my original posting, and might know something
about this book, I'm asking again…

Thanks again to all who replied, and thanks for any further help
anyone can provide,

[ha-Safran]: AJL 2009 in Chicago - notes for attendees

2009-06-15 Thread Shoshanah Rose Seidman
The convention is fast approaching and we thought we would share with you
some information we gave earlier about sights and how to reach the
convention hotel.

See you soon,

Shoshanah Seidman
Co-chair AJL 2009 in Chicago

TOURS AND CHICAGO HIGHLIGHTS

Did you know that skyscrapers were invented in Chicago? We recommend that
the best way to see them, and all of the stunning architecture in downtown
Chicago, is to go by boat up the Chicago River. We have pre-arranged
architectural boat tours of the city, on Sunday or Wednesday afternoon (see
registration form for times and prices). And speaking of architecture,
there will be a year-long exhibit at the Art Institute on the master
architect of Chicago, Daniel Burnham. In addition to our convention, your
itinerary could include the Spertus Institute Museum, which has striking
exhibits, the new Illinois Holocaust Museum, the Museum of Science and
Industry, the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium, and
beautiful Michigan Avenue. There are EL tours, walking tours, jazz and
comedy clubs, Frank Lloyd Wright home tours and Second City. The hotel is
right near Millenium Park's Pritzker Pavilion where the Grant Park Orchestra
plays for free almost every night. Fireworks can be seen off of Navy Pier,
and Taste of Chicago ends on July 5, the first day of our convention.

Jewish Chicago: On Sunday afternoon, July 5, we will offer a Chicago Jewish
tradition - Chicago Jewish Roots, a bus tour of Chicago's Jewish history
led by renowned geographer and historian Dr. Irving Cutler. See your
registration packet for details.
The 2008 National League Central Division Champion Chicago Cubs will have
HOME games that week, so think about getting your tickets to Wrigley Field
when they go on sale. The 2008 American League Central Division Champion
Chicago White Sox will be playing Cleveland at U.S. Cellular Field on July 7
and 8, and tickets will be available for purchase as well. (NOTE: The
convention planners are not going to purchase a block of tickets - we
encourage you to make plans on your own.)

GETTING TO CONVENTION

Two convenient airports service Chicago: O'Hare International Airport and
the Chicago Midway Airport. Each is roughly 30 minutes from the hotel, and
each has easy connections for ground and public transportation.

Shuttle service to downtown hotels is available from both airports. The
Airport Express Shuttle from O'Hare costs approximately $28.00 one way;
service from Midway costs approximately $23.00. Discounts are available for
roundtrip tickets and for two or more passengers. For information, see
www.airportexpress.com. Taxis are also available. Expect to pay
approximately $40 from O'Hare and approximately $30 from Midway.

Public transportation is another option. Take the Blue Line train from
O'Hare (exit at the Clark/Lake station) or the Orange Line train from Midway
(exit at the State/Lake station). You can then walk or take a cab to the
hotel. It will be a little over an hour from either airport and costs $2.25
for a rail ticket. See www.transitchicago.com.

Amtrak (www.amtrak.com), Greyhound (www.greyhound.com), and the Megabus
(www.megabus.com, servicing select Midwest cities) are also options with
stations in downtown Chicago.

Parking, either valet or self-parking is available at the hotel as well.
Updated travel information will be posted on the AJL website convention page
in the spring.

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is pleased to announce that
the next Ruth Gay Seminar in Jewish Studies will take place on
Sunday, June 21, 2009 at3 pm. Meet the faculty and refreshments at
3 pm. Seminar at 3:30 pm. RSVP required. Email fmoh...@yivo.cjh.org
or call 212-294-6143.

The Seminar will be given in the Kovno Room, Center for Jewish
History,15 West 16th Street, New York. The presenter will be Dr.
Alice Freifeld, Associate Professor in History at the University of
Florida. Dr. Freifeld will focus on her current book project on
Hungarian Jewry from 1945-1949. Freifeld is the author
of Nationalism and the Crowd in Liberal Hungary, 1848-1914 and the
recipient of the Barbara Jelavich book prize in Slavic studies. Dr.
Freifeld is the current president of the Hungarian Studies Association.

The presentation will concentrate on the conditions faced by
Hungarian Jewish survivors in the aftermath of the Holocaust, on the
war crimes trials conducted, and in the wake of new anti-semitism,
the widespread movement by Hungarian Jews to flee to displaced
persons camps in Austria and Germany .In 1948-49 the borders were
shut down, except for a last wave of illegal departure after the
founding of Israel. Concentrating inBudapest, perhaps as many as
120,000 Jews would remain in the Communist era, 10 percent of whom
fled in the revolution of 1956.

The Ruth Gay Seminar in Jewish Studies is given at YIVO several times
a year by scholars who have used the YIVO Archives and Library and
who wish to share their research with the public. The seminar
series is named in honor of the late historian and scholar Ruth Gay
(1922-2006) and was made possible thanks to a major gift from the
family of Ruth Gay.

1. Widely regarded as mark of respect that you visited the grave of a
distinguished scholar. Became generalized to show you visited any grave.
This was the answer I gave in Berlin as to why headstone for Moses
Mendelssohn shows these stones.

2. Tallit, although used TODAY to mean prayer shawl, simply means bolt
of cloth. See Baba Metziah 1:1 and

says, I found it, or one says It's all mine, and the other says, It's
all mine, they each swear that they don't own more than half of the cloak
and they split the cloak.

2) (If) one says, It's all mine and the other says, It's half mine, the
