2009-06-24 Thread Susan Dubin
Thank you for posting this information, Daniel! Kol HaKavod to all
the AJL Librarians presenting at the World Congress of Jewish
Studies. Just the sessions you mentioned sound like it will be an
outstanding program. I hope that some of you will write articles for
Judaic Librarianship and/or the Newsletter about your topics.

Looking forward to seeing you in Chicago!

[ha-Safran]: Complimentary Book Offer

2009-06-24 Thread Paul Hamburg
Jane Sutz Brott would like to offer AJL librarians a complimentary
copy of her book, Needle and Thread: A Tale of Survival from
Bialystok to Paris by Charles "Shleimeh" Zabuski as told to June Sutz Brott.

Needle and Thread is the result of a decade-long collaboration
between two cousins – June Sutz Brott of Oakland, California and
Charles "Shleimeh" Zabuski of Paris, France. Brott's father,
Benjamin Sutz, and Zabuski's mother, Sarah Sutz, were brother and
sister, born into a large family in Bialystok, Poland. In 1908
Benjamin, twelve, was spirited out of Poland and settled
inAmerica. Sarah Sutz Zabuski remained in Bialystok and was
murdered, along with most of the family, during the Holocaust. Her
son Charles survived; however, for 40 years he refused to speak about
what he had seen and experienced.

Brott, who had been haunted since childhood by an old photograph of
the Bialystok family, eventually convinced Charles to talk. The two
cousins – meeting with translators in California and in France –
produced Needle and Thread, an important contribution to Holocaust
history. Zabuski relates an eye-witness account of post-World War I
Poland, the Russioan occupation, the German invasion, the ghetto, the
concentration camps, the libraration, and the fragile beginnings of a
new life in Paris.

Zabuski, after retiring as a tailor, wrote about his memories in
Yiddish and French. He also became a journalist for Undzer Vort (Our
Word), the only Yiddish daily newspaper in Europe. Active in the
French Jewish community, he arranges yearly Yizkor (memorial)
ceremonies for Bialystoker Jews.

[ha-Safran]: RE: AJL Conference transportation

2009-06-24 Thread Shoshanah Rose Seidman
Hi:

I shall share my answer to Judy's questions to everyone so you do not
waste your time writing again and again.

1. Public transportation:

The best stop on the Blue line from O'Hare to downtown to reach the
hotel is the Grand Street station (Grand & State – 10 E. Grand
Street) The Hotel's address is 301 E. North Water Street. It's a
0.65 mile walk. Chicago is flat (really flat) so it's easy to walk.

Walk East on Grand (towards the Lake) until you reach Fairbanks/Columbus Dr.

Take a right on Columbus Drive. You will see the hotel two blocks
ahead on your left.

2. Bus to the airport after the convention

We need 40 people to make this option viable so we cannot offer it
every hour (wish we had 1,000 attendees!). We suggested 4:00 pm and
then added a 1:00 pm possibility. These will be the only options if
enough people show interest. So far we have only 3 for the 1:00 pm
bus. Thank you for your understanding.

I shall now concentrate on other convention matters to welcome you in
grand style.

See you soon,

Shoshanah

Subject: AJL Conference transportation

Hi ShoshanaI just opened the Hasafran with info on the transport
opportunities for the meeting. From OHare, you mentioned the public
transport. I understand it takes one to the downtown area but how
close to the hotel does it go? If it is close enough to shlep a
suitcase, I certainly would consider it. Would you mind sending more
detail? Also, for the return to the airport on Wed, I am traveling
with another Houstonian who is on the same flight out of OHare,
departing at 5:30, so if a bus was booked probably around 3 pm would
be the best time for us. (In case you are surveying when most are
interested in leaving) We would appreciate a bus on the return
because you always have much more to shlep in the bag! Thanks for
updating us on this and hope to see you there. J

[ha-Safran]: THE FIRE WITHIN as mentioned in The New York Times

2009-06-24 Thread Ruth Diskin
Dear Librarian,

The Power of Belief and the Sway of History

In the fascinating new documentary THE FIRE WITHIN (60 min), we learn
about the story of the unique Jewish community of Iquitos, Peru. The
rich history and distinctive past of this place are beautifully
explored in a recent New York Times article as well
(http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/22/world/americas/22peru.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=iquitos&st=cse)

.The fascinating past of Iquitos is the subject of the article by
Simon Romero where Lorry Salcedo Mitrani, the director of THE FIRE
WITHIN is quoted.

This is obviously a subject of great interest right now and we would
love to have you purchase a copy of the film for your collection as
well. THE FIRE WITHIN has already been purchased by the University of
Massachusetts, Stanford University, Duke and Yale. The price for
university libraries is $300 and $115 for public libraries. Prices do
not include shipping and handling. The Film is available on DVD, and
is accompanied by English subtitles.

In addition I wanted to bring to your attention our new and improved
website. Besides getting a face-lift – we now offer purchase of our
titles to individuals thru the site at home-use only prices.

I would encourage you to take a moment and take a look at the
sitewww.ruthfilms.com

As always, if there are any questions or concerns, please feel free
to contact us at r...@ruthfilms.com
