[ha-Safran]: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle (a new book)

2009-11-03 Thread David Elazar
Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle (a new book)

a.. Pub. Date: October 2009
a.. Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
a.. Format: Hardcover, 304pp

About the book -
http://www.startupnationbook.com/

Interview with one of the authors, Dan Senor -
http://www.road90.com/watch.php?id=UmazDJmcZW

Excerpt (chapter 4) -
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33465046/ns/meet_the_press/

START-UP NATION addresses the trillion dollar question: How is it that
Israel - a country of 7.1 million, only 60 years old, surrounded by
enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding, with no natural
resources produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful, and stable
nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada, and the UK? How is it that
Israel has, per person, attracted over twice as much venture capital
investment as the US and thirty times more than Europe?

Israel has more companies on the tech-oriented NASDAQ stock exchange than
any country outside the US – more than all of Europe, India, and China
combined. Nor is Israeli innovation limited to computers, security, and
communications; the Jewish state leads the world in medical device patents,
and is a strong global player in cleantech and biotech.

Dan Senor, Adjunct Senior Fellow for Middle East Studies at the Council on
Foreign Relations, has been on the front lines of policy, politics, and
business in the Middle East. As a senior foreign policy advisor to the U.S.
Government , he was one of the longest-serving civilian officials in Iraq.
He has also served in Qatar and studied in Israel. Senor's pieces are
frequently published by The Wall Street Journal. Saul Singer is the
editorial editor of The Jerusalem Post, for which he writes a weekly column,
and the author of Confronting Jihad: Israel's Struggle and the World after
9/11. For ten years, he served as a foreign policy advisor on Capitol Hill.

[Hasafran] Drancy Avenir

2009-11-03 Thread Liz Edelglass
Is anyone familiar with the film Drancy Avenir, which uses actors to
recite published Holocaust testimonies and text juxtaposed against
varied related images? The booklet that comes with the film
specifies that it is neither documentary nor fiction. So I do not
know quite how to catalog it. For instance, should I use the subject
heading "Holocaust, 1939-1945 -- France" or "Holocaust, 1939-1945 --
France -- Fiction"?

Also, last week someone asked whether R. Crumb's new Book of Genesis
is appropriate for a Judaic library. I would love to hear answers to
that question.

Thanks.

2009-11-03 Thread Henry Hollander
We are glad to offer the complete four volume set of Jacob Rader
Marcus' last encyclopedic treatment of American Jewish History. It

it. I am glad to be able to offer complete sets for $60.00 postpaid
within the US. $80.00 postpaid to Canada, or $97.00 postpaid
elsewhere around the globe. Included with this set at no additional
cost will be a copy of a posthumously published collection of Marcus'
essays, "The Dynamics of American Jewish History: Jacob Rader
Marcus's Essays on American Jewry," a Brandeis U. Press. Publication.

The 65-minute film (in Serbian, English and Hebrew, with English
subtitles) is a story about Zineba Hardaga*s Serbian family, who hid a
Jewish family during WWII and saved its members from certain death.
Later, she became the first Muslim woman to be honored by Israel as
*Righteous Among Nations,* recognition given to non-Jews who
risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews from extermination
by the Nazis. Fifty years later, the situation is reversed and it is the
Jewish family*s turn to rescue the Hardaga family from the inferno of
Sarajevo.

Alterman, professor of dramatic writing and directing at Haifa
University and at the School of Playwrights in Tel Aviv, has a rich and
varied experience as a writer and director for the theater, musicals,
television programs and documentary films. Her films include *The
People of Magdal Shams,* the story of six Druze villagers whose
futures are linked to the elusive peace between Israel and Syria; *A
Fence in the Middle of the Sitting Room,* the story of a Syrian
village divided between two nations; and *With Strong Hand,* which
looks at the lives of orthodox Jews who are also masters of Asian
martial arts. She is especially interested in exploring the lives of
women who demonstrate the courage to forge their own paths, as in
*Photo Birr,* the story of 10 women traveling to the south of
Ethiopia, and *When Caca Met Sugra,* the story of middle-class
career women traversing the Mongolian wilderness.

[ha-Safran]: Judaica librarianship - Classes

2009-11-03 Thread Nancy Poole
Greetings safranim,

This topic has come up before (I've been looking through the
archives), but there are some of us fairly new to the organization
and list serve. SO - if you could help us out, that would be much appreciated.

First are you aware of any classes in librarianship for Jewish
libraries? I mean, at colleges or universities, either online or in
classrooms. Not ceus - for example - as AJL does every year. COuld
be a full progrqm or just some courses toward a certificate or
specialization within another degree - but the main element must be
librarianship as related to Judaica/Jewish llibraries.

I've tried to look at the Israeli universities - but, alas, my
knowledge of Hebrew makes the going very slow. Bar Ilan, JNUL, and I
think Hebrew University are supposed to have library programs.

In the states, I noticed Yelena had one started or in the process a
few years back at U Maryland, there was also mention at Gratz, but it
seems that those programs are no longer around. I have looked at all
the ALA programs and have not seen a single course relevant to Jewish
librarians (in terms of special issues).

Is anyone aware of any offering elsewhere - or that I may have missed?

Secondly, how willing would you be to take such classes if offered online?

Thanks

[ha-Safran]: Accreditation Update

2009-11-03 Thread Michal Davis
I NEED HELP!! This past year the accreditation committee is in
desperate need of committee members. I cannot do it by
myself. Librarians who have gone through the accreditation process
understand how important that accreditation is.
I know you are busy, but if we do not help each other nothing gets
done!! Please call me at 516-263-8842 if you can offer any time to
help me with the committee. -- Thank you

For all those accredited libraries who have not received the logo
please e-mail me so I can send it to you.

Librarians -- I realize I have not updated the website -- for that I
apologize however the forms are still valid. Applications are due by
NO LATER THAN MARCH 1st, 2010 -- reponses should be out by mid-May, 2010.

Any libraries that wants to be grandfathered in to the new 5 year
cycle MUST return the sent forms by December 10th, 2009. If I do not
receive the forms, you will lose your accreditations, and must begin
the accreditation process from the beginning.

If you have any questions about the AJL accreditation process, please
e-mail me at ajlaccreditat...@gmail.com

[ha-Safran]: Esther Hautzig (1930-2009)

2009-11-03 Thread Zachary M Baker
Today's New York Times print edition includes a brief paid necrology
for the author Esther Hautzig. An obituary for her, by Joseph
Berger, has been published in the online edition of the Times as
well. Esther wrote a number of books for children and young adults,
notably "The Endless Steppe," "A Gift for Mama," and "Remember Who
You Are." These books and others drew upon her childhood years in
Vilna and her wartime experiences as a Jewish refugee in Siberia.

Esther was passionate about libraries. As a little girl in Vilna she
often visited the Jewish children's library, which was where she
first met Dina Abramowicz, the future head librarian of the YIVO
Institute for Jewish Research in New York City. Esther also
volunteered for many years at the Donnell Branch of the New York
Public Library.

She was a gregarious individual who "collected" people. Her Hanukkah
parties were legendary, bringing together disparate personalities
from the Great White Way, Publisher's Row, the New York Public
Library, Anshe Chesed Synagogue, and West End Avenue. The holiday
spread was so lavish that one almost felt like saying kaddish over
the oversized salmon, procured at Citarella's. And in the music
room, adjoining the living room, her husband Walter Hautzig, a superb
concert pianist, might be heard playing a piece by Schubert or Chopin.

Esther was especially devoted to the cultural legacy of her native
Vilna. She was involved with the Nusakh Vilne organization and
maintained close ties with the small Jewish community of that city
after her visit there in 1993. She was an enthusiast in the very
best sense of the word and all who knew her - either in person or
through her writings - will greatly miss her.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Holocaust Books for Children

2009-11-03 Thread Lois Ruby
Excellent input, Sara, on the subject of Holocaust books for
children. You listed one of my absolute favorites in this category,
THE DEVIL'S ARITHMETIC. It meets all the criteria you suggested, and
the reason I've recommended this book for years and years is the
"remove/safety" aspect. Since it's clearly a time-travel story, the
sensitive reader will subconsciously know that the Jewish protagonist
will come back to the present time, therefore will not perish during WWII.

[ha-Safran]: Fall 2009 Jerusalem Books Newsletter

2009-11-03 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

A recurring theme in our newsletters over the years has been the
importance of books which overlap different categories of books and
fields of Jewish Studies.

Midrash Naomi, is just such a book. It is authored and edited by
Avrajam Zigman and published by Yad Ben Zvi, isbn 978-965-217-297-6,
Jerusalem 2009. The book contains the poetry of Naomi Shemer
(1930-2004), an icon of Israeli, Hebrew poetry, literature and song,
with 'nikkud,' and the dates of each poem along with the text of the
author relating the passages to biblical, talmudic, midrashic /
(aggadic), rabbinic and hassidic sources. The work is accompanied by
the illustration, artwork of Ruth Zarfati. Without belaboring the
matter let me sum up by saying that the book is not only beautiful
and a fitting gift, but a resource for scholars and libraries
interested in Hebrew Literature and Bible, Rabbinics and Jewish
Studies. Cat. # 71980 $33.00

Another work of fusion worthy of much attention is a book entitled,
Dirshuni – Israeli Women Writing Midrash, edited by Nehama Weingarten
– Mintz and Tamar Biala. The work is a collection of midrashic
stories by Israeli women authors on biblical and talmudic passages,
aggada. It is scholarly and enthralling. It is modern Hebrew
Literature and classic Jewish Philosophy. It is ancient Aramaic and
modern Hebrew prose. It is classic Bible study and Jewish Studies and
Judaism and Feminism. It is a window on the Jewish Thought and Hebrew
literature of some 35 of the wisest best educated modern Israeli
women authors. Published by Yediot Hemed and the Jewish Agency, isbn
978-965-482-862-8, Tel Aviv 2009. Do not pass go, do not miss this
book.Cat. # 71866 $28.00

In the realm of modern Hebrew Literature popular prose and titles
which straddle categories such as Bible or Israeli society and
culture let's note Ram Oren's new work – Me'ha-Tanakh be-Ahavah
('From the Bible with Love,') isbn 978-965-7130-37-7, published by
Keshet. In this work, with the assistance of Dr Yoel Rapel and Dr.
Pnina Galpaz Feler, the well known and immensely popular author
depicts monumental loves from the Tanakh. Cat. #71821 $31.00

At the other end of the spectrum is the recent work by Moshe Pelli,
Kerem Hemed . This is a scholarly work of great importance in terms
of Jewish History as well as Hebrew Language and Literature. It
analyzes this / these early Hebrew language journals. It has
important indices, footnotes, bibliography and not least an important
introduction in English. The book is published by Magnes,
isbnCat 71848 $ 34.00

We have just gotten the second volume of the series, 'Encyclopedia of
the Jewish Story, (subtitled, Sippur Okev Sippur), edited by Yoav
Elstein, Avidor Lipsker and Rella Kushelevsky, isbn 978-965-226-358-2
and published by Bar Ilan University, Ramat Gan 2009. This is an
important scholarly work of studies in Jewish Literature. It is a
critical, scholarly edition. (Volume I came out in 2004) Cat.
#71763 $44.50

Similarly we have seen what turns out to be volume II of Ma'aseh
Sippur, Studies in Jewish Narrative. It is equally important, edited
by Avidor Lipsker and Kushelevsky and published by Bar Ilan
University isbn 978-965-226-339-1, 2009. Cat. #71774 $47.00

Lastly, I would like to mention and promote a little, 'popular,' book
published by author, David Ehrlich, entitled, 'Sefer
Ha-Ahavot...' The book is about the well known, Jerusalem literary
café' Tmol Shilshom owned by, you guessed it, David Ehrlich. The
book contains 'interviews' with couples who met at Tmol Shilshom and
I must admit a personal interest here, one of those couples is Jeff
Spitzer and Nicky Cregor, my beloved wife. No, this is not a vanity
book and we did not finance it's publication. It is an example of
21st Cent. CE modern Hebrew lit. and at the same time a window onto
this wonderful place where food, books, poetry and some interesting
varied couples meet. Cat. # 71370 $10.00

We hope that these short updates on Israeli publishing are
interesting and helpful at least in parts and at times and encourages
all those involved in the important work of collecting, researching,
teaching and studying, books in Hebrew from Israel.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have
supported us over the past year and years for that matter.

Sincerely,

Jeff Spitzer

Re: [ha-Safran]: High School Level Book on anti-Semitism

2009-11-03 Thread Andrea Rapp
"Drummers of Jericho" by Carolyn Meyer is intersesting. It's about a
Jewish student in a small town high school who objects to marching in
a "cross" formation in marching band, and causes an incident.
Robert Cormier's "Tunes for Bears to Dance to" has a Holocaust
connection but takes place in contemporary USA and is a fascinating
study. It would be my first choice.
Also consider Kathryn Lasky's "Prank", Sybil Rosen's "Speed of
Light", and Eileen Sherman's "The Violin Players", also set in a high
school (in the Midwest).

RE: [ha-Safran]: Judaica Librarianship

2009-11-03 Thread Rettberg, Dan
Dear Haim--

You are just where I was about twenty years ago! I had completed a Ph.D.
in Rabbinical literature and enrolled in an M.S. in Information Studies
program focussing on cataloging and rare books.

So far as I know there are no active programs in Judaica Librarianship
in existence. There used to be one which was a joint program of Gratz
College and of Drexel University in Philadelphia. I don't know if it
still exists. If any of my colleagues can correct me on this I would be
pleased to hear from them. I suggest you rely on your classes for the
technical aspects of rare books and the "nuts and bolts" of
librarianship (cataloging, reference, collection development, etc.)and
depending on your background and interests read all you can about the
classical sources of Judaism (Talmud, Midrash, Zohar, etc.) on your own.

Given the fact that you are emphasizing rare books and manuscripts I
assume that you are looking to a career in academic librarianship either
in a large research university or in a smaller archive, museum, or
repository. Good luck! I wish I could give you more encouragement, but
given the present state of the economy jobs seem to be few and far
between. My advice is to have a strong seond "suit" besides Judaica
which you can also list on your c.v. Pick something that interests you
and which is a popular and known collecting area, like some area of
American history or modern literature. If you can "weave" it into your
Judaic interests so much the better.

Well, now I'll "shut up" and let my colleagues have at it.

Best,

"I like work; it fascinates

for hours."

~ Jerome K Jerome

MONKEY BUSINESS

BY VERONICA BELLING

I never anticipated when I took a job as a Jewish Studies librarian
at U.C.T. Libraries that it would involve close encounters with a
baboon! As my desk in the Jewish Studies Library is right along side
the window adjacent to the bins where the baboons have been foraging,
I have been in a position to observe them more closely than most.
Firstly since the baboons have become a presence on campus, I have
observed three. The first two I can say fairly confidently were
males. The first was larger and younger, the second was slightly
smaller and had more grey hairs, therefore I presume was older. The
third, who visited the Kaplan Centre this week, I am fairly sure is a
female, she is smaller, more compact and has a neater fur that the
previous two. If one can say this of a baboon, she is „prettier. than
her predecessors.

Observing their foraging, I was curious to see what their food
preferences would be, as they are quite discerning! One really
enjoyed the core of mielies, that he gnawed through happily, a banana
was a real bonus (we all know that monkeys are supposed to like
bananas), but he also took a few bites from a pumpkin fritter, before
he threw it away. I sympathized as I also find them a bit too oily,
although they are delicious. Generally the baboons enjoy the remains
of sandwiches.

Although most of my observations have been of their foraging through
the bins, one afternoon when I had completely forgotten about
baboons, I was about to leave the building when immediately opposite
me on the other side of glass door, the baboon was loping along,
probably on his way back up the mountain. I got a fright and
immediately locked the front door. (We don.t bother to lock any more,
we have become so used to them!). At the sound of the bolt the baboon
took fright and stood dead still, aware of some present danger. I
guess the sound of a bolt turning could be very similar to that of a
gun being cocked.

However this week on Tuesday morning, the female baboon really outdid
herself, actually entering the Kaplan Centre canteen and taking four
muffins from the plate where they are kept right next to the till!!!
The ladies in the canteen had left the far door open and were busy
with food preparation at the back of the kitchen. They did not
initially notice that the baboon had entered. She stood on her hind
legs next to the counter opposite the till, and took the four muffins
that were standing on a plate next to the till, putting them into the
crook of her arm. Patricia Solomons said that she was the first to
see her as she turned towards the sink. She was standing there "just
like a customer", said Patricia, "busy chewing one of the muffins."
Patricia went to call Christopher Davids from the library to shoo the
beast away. Says Chris: "I just went in and told her to go and she
left through the door." "She was not aggressive," said Patricia. At
that point I was called in to see what was going on. Along with other
interested bystanders, I watched the baboon enjoying the stolen
muffins. I have been asked what flavour they were. They were apple
muffins with lots of icing on top. She was clearly not worried about
her figure! Other comments I received were: At least she had no
problems with the standard of the kashrut (Jewish dietary laws)
observed at the canteen!

On Wednesday morning early she was at the far door again, but
fortunately or unfortunately (it depends whose side you are on) this
time the door was closed except for a crack. She put her paw through
the crack but luckily she does not understand that it is possible to
slide the door open, as she most certainly has the physical strength
to do this! What a pity the ladies in the canteen did not have cell
phones with cameras to record these incidents! And I didn.t think of
calling anybody with a camera either. Perhaps next time if there is one!
