Francine Prose's Anne Frank: The Book, the Life, the Afterlife delves
into the life of the 15-year-old girl to reveal an even more complex
picture than her extraordinary Diary showed. By looking at the book
and its eventual publication, we discover new truths about its
author, the book's impact, and its importance. Ernie Colón and Sid
Jacobson, perhaps best known for The 9/11 Report: A Graphic
Adaptation, have come together again to present Anne Frank in a new
graphic book about her life which will be released later this year.
Both books and their authors required detailed research in close
collaboration with the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Don't miss this
fascinating exploration of one of the world's most read books and its
incredible 15-year-old author, led by author and New Yorker staff
writer Judith Thurman

Dear Safranim:

Last week at the National Jewish Book Awards from the Jewish Book
Council, I was wuite excited to be sitting surrounded by some of the
great authors of the year. I did not know it, but the man to my
right with whom I shared an arm rest was Professor James
Kugel. Directly in front of me was Rabbi Irving Yitz Greenberg and
his wife Blu, both authors. They were there also since one of the
awards has been named in honor of their late son. To their right was
the author, Joseph Kertes. Two rows up was Ruth Gruber, and so many more.

I am still fixing it up, but I have a page of the finalists and
winners of the National Jewish Book Awards with book covers and
hyperlinks to book reviews.

The page is http://www.MyJewishBooks.com/awards09.html

[ha-Safran]: Virtual exhibition of non traditional haggadot

2010-03-21 Thread Shunit Degani
I would like to draw your attention to a very interesting virtual
exhibition in the Israeli National Library:

The Haggadah is a Jewish religious text that sets out the order of
the Passover Seder. The Haggadah is the most popular printed text
after the Bible. Since the early twentieth century, along with the
traditional Haggadah there was a shift to non-traditional Haggadah
which uses only part of the traditional text and has many other
additions. The change reflects the developments that have occurred in
Jewish history, especially the shift away from tradition and
penetration of new modern trends, and the return of the Jewish
people from exile to his homeland. The non-traditional Haggadot also
reflect the story of Israeli society and its culture.

The National Library has over six hundred non-traditional Haggadot.
We chose 28 Haggadot from different sectors: kibbutzim, youth
movements, the Jewish Brigade, satirical Haggadot etc. The exhibition
also includes a selection of videos on the kibbutz Passover ritual
and the Omer ceremony, a selection of recordings of songs that are
sung during the Seder and some Press Releases on Passover in the kibbutz.

It is interesting to note that in recent years the Haggadah
shifts back to the more traditional text .

[ha-Safran]: Hebrew stop words list

2010-03-21 Thread Lovins
Dear colleagues,

A question came up about Hebrew stop word lists, i.e., terms set
aside at index and/or query time because they're too common or
semantically vague for retrieval purposes (e.g., in English, the word 'the').

I found this list Hebrew terms at stackoverflow.com:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1365510/where-can-i-find-a-list-of-hebrew-stop-words,

but it's just a list of highest occurring terms in a news database,
not really appropriate.

Do you have lists that you use for Hebrew script indexing and retrieval?

I'd also be interested in an Arabic list.

Thanks.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Yiddish and Judeo-German

2010-03-21 Thread Aaron Kuperman
The question to ask is whether someone speaking "western" Yiddish (which
is probably extinct as a living language), and in a German environment
could distinguish between Judeo-German and their dialect of
Yiddish. Yiddish usually adopts many words from the local language and
tends to reflect the grammar of the local language (compare the Yiddish
spoken in Brooklyn, and the Yiddish spoken in Eretz Yisrael, which are
the two leading places where Yiddish remains a living language).

No one is arguing that Yiddish and German are distinct languages, but
rather whether there is a distinct language called "Judeo-German", and
whether what is being referred to as "Judeo-German" is merely Yiddish with
a larger than usual segment of German thrown in (just as Brooklyn Yiddish
has a larger than usual segment of English, and Jerusalem Yiddish has a
larger than usual segment of Hebrew).

Aaron

(not the view of my employer, heck I only get Yiddish once in a blue moon
since all I do is class K - though I have lived in places where Yiddish is
still a living language and listened to children who speak Yiddish as a
first language)

[ha-Safran]: FS: Two Recent Jewish Art Titles

2010-03-21 Thread Henry Hollander
Two newer arrivals offered individually as priced below or as a pair
for $30.00 postpaid with the US. We ship and bill to libraries.
Otherwise, prepayment is required. Call 415-831-3228 or email to reserve.

Soltes, Ori Z. "Fixing the World: Jewish American Painters in the
Twentieth Century." Hanover, New Hampshire, Brandies University
Press, published by University Press of New England, 2003. First
Edition. ISBN: 12-58465-049-4. Large square quarto in dust jacket,
color frontispiece (detail from Kitaj's 'The Painter (Cross and
Chimney)'), x, 163 pp., color plates throughout, a few b/w photos,
notes, index. Hardbound. Very Good. "Their work reflects profound
historical and cultural issues, such as what it means to be a Jewish
artist in the western tradition of Christian art, and what it means,
as Jews, to be painters of the specifically American experience. Ori
Soltes focuses primarily on the work of 20th-century Jewish painters
to explore themes ranging from the trials of immigration, depictions
of urban life and politics, renderings of the Holocaust, and the
reconstitution of Judaism in recent years by feminist painters and
Soviet emigrée artists. The astonishing array of work represented in
this book sometimes displays overtly Jewish themes and symbols; other
paintings are included for their importance in the general
development of 20th-century painting. Balancing individual
biographies of painters, stylistic analysis, and thematic
interpretations, Soltes offers a remarkable survey of 20th-century
American Jewish painting.
Despite the diverse range of images, themes, a common thread among
most of these paintings is the concept of tikkun olamof repairing or
fixing the world. Most of the artists represented here demonstrate an
interest in the social, as well as the aesthetic, import of their
work. We see this concern for social betterment in the urban
paintings of the Soyer brothers, in the "political" paintings of Ben
Shahn, in the Holocaust-inflected works of numerous artists, and in
the more contemporary work of Joyce Ellen Weinstein decrying violence
and racism." from UPNE web copy. The book is especially helpful in
its treatment of recent Jewish art. (51443)$20.00 postpaid within the US.

van Voolen, Edward. "My Grandparents, My Parents and I: Jewish Art
and Culture." Munich Berlin London New York, Prestel, 2006. First
Edition. ISBN: 978-3-7913-3362-5. Quarto in dust jacket, 192 pp.,
color illustrations throughout, some b/w photos, bibliography.
Hardbound. Very Good. Another survey of "Jewish Art," that tries to
compile the work of artists who strongly identitfied with the Jewish
people with the work of artists who were ambivalent about or even
stealthy in their concealment of their Jewish identity. The author
teases out the effects of Jewish experience, If not specifically
Jewish "content" in their art. Artitsts dealt with include (among
many others) Ryback, El Lissitzky, Chagal, Man Ray, Soutine, Lesser
Ury, Frida Kahlo, Jankel Adler, Otto Freundlich Jim Dine, Moshe
Gershuni, Kitaj, Jonathan Borofsky, Grisha Bruskin, Zelig Segal,
Christian Boltanski, Anish Kapoor, Lawrnce Weiner, Richard Serra,
Michal Na'aman, Nancy Spero, Nan Goldin, Ilya Kabakov, Michal Rovner,
and William Kentridge. (51664) $25.00 postpaid within the US.
