RE: [ha-Safran]: Early Jewish children's books

2010-07-26 Thread Andrea Rapp
Here in Toronto, we have a collection of old important children's
books housed at one branch of thepublic library. Is there something
similar somewhere in the U.S?

Yes, the University of Minnesota has the Kerlan Collection.

Setting up criteria could be complicated.
For example, we have several copies of Marilyn Hirsh's Where is
Yonkela?--which I see sells for up to $154.00 on alibris. Yet its
copyright date is 1969. Would it qualify?

As a post-script to Dan Rettberg's excellent advice about what to
look for in duplicate copies, the illustrator is also very
important. Different editions of a book can have different

[ha-Safran]: Archival libraries

2010-07-26 Thread Fredisaac
Safranim --

Thanks for your thoughts about my new gig with an archive and
research library.

It occurs to me that there could be a small sub-set of us to start a
conversation about this type of collection. Is anyone interested in
starting a discussion group on the topic? It could be only a few
synagogue/SSC people, or could expand to include some of the RAS
folks who have smaller Judaica research collections.

Reply to me off-list, please. We shouldn't clog Hasafran.

[ha-Safran]: Google Books now in Hebrew

Google Books has come to Israel.

According to Globes, Keter Publishing House Ltd. is the first
Israeli publisher to collaborate with Google, which wants to sign
agreements with other publishers to enrich its online library. Google
said that, in addition to access to Hebrew books for surfers, the
venture will give writers and publishers an opportunity to reach a
wider readership.

The goal is to allow online searches of Hebrew books.

[ha-Safran]: Judaic Collection Development

2010-07-26 Thread Sara Rofofsky Marcus
Safranim,

I have been approached by our local public library to provide a list
of suggested Judaic / Hebrew titles for their collection. This is an
amazing outreach from the library and one I would like to
encourage. The current collection has basically nothing (well, maybe
Diary of Anne Frank, but that's about it). Both current and classic
titles are welcomed, for all age levels.

I have not been given a budget - just asked to make a list. I am
planning on using Merilly Hart's book, but that is 2008 so if
anything more recent has come out that might be worthwhile, I'd
appreciate tips and suggestions.

The community is a range of all observance levels, and all interests.

Please respond off-list. If there is an interest, I will post a summary.

Sara

[ha-Safran]: Hadassah article about new, crime story books

2010-07-26 Thread Helen Chronister
There was an article called A Chronicle of Jewish Crime Books by
Zelda Shluker in a recent magazine. Of the books listed, I read The
Last Ember by Daniel Levin, which I recommend. I would like to know
if anyone has read any of the other books and/or purchased them for
their library.

Also, on another note, Rachel Kamin gave us a wonderful list of DVDs
for our collections; however, I believe she meant The Secrets ~
Fanny Ardant, Ania Bukstein, Michal Shtamler, and Adir Miller (DVD -
2009) not A Secret.

(1) Summer theater issues.. did you read about the playwrite who
imagined what would happen if Madoff was confronted by the Nobel
Laureate, Eli Wiesel, the same Wiesel who lost nearly all his
savings/investments in Madoff's fraud? The New York Times featured
the controversy on the front page of its Arts section one day this
week. Sounds interesting. Synopsis is that Wiesel theatened to sue
if they mounted the production with a character playing him. The
production dropped out of Washington DC's Theatre J Fall schedule,
it was rewritten, and is now being workshopped / staged in a theater

2010-07-26 Thread Anna Olswanger
I've been a member of AJL for several years. Along the way I've
chaired an AJL committee that helped bring Jewish children's books
back into print, authored a Sydney Taylor Honor Book (Shlemiel
Crooks), and coordinated the Jewish Children's Book Writers'
Conference with Steve Siegel when it was sponsored by the library at
the 92nd Street Y.

I continue to write and to work as a literary agent, but have
recently created a website, and what I hope will be the beginning of
an organization, that is a bit removed from my usual focus on Jewish
children's books. The website is for older childless Jews:

http://www.Yerusha.comwww.Yerusha.com

Being an older childless Jew is not something people talk about,
perhaps out of fear of hurting the person who is childless, but it's
an issue that will never go away for some of us. I hope Yerusha will
be a starting point for discussions or even the formations of local
groups among Jews who want to share experiences and support.

In fact, I hope others will step in and take Yerusha to the next level.

Please refer the above website to any patrons who are looking for
resources for older childless Jews.

Thank you.

[ha-Safran] Help getting book published

2010-07-26 Thread Rachel Haus
Dear Hasafranim,

The following is from a patron. I have no experience in the
publishing world. Any ideas for this person?

Rachel Haus
Library Director
Congregation of Moses Library
Kalamazoo MI
rhaus_...@yahoo.com

I have written a novel about the Middle East issues involving two
families, one Arab/Muslim the other Israeli/Jewish and alternate
chapters using Arabic and Hebrew numbers for their chapters
respectively. After a surprise in the middle for each family, they
unknowingly are in the same place (Jerusalem bus stop) at the same
time a tragic event occurs which both families experience the same
way. In the epilogue they come together realizing retaliatory
violence is not the answer.

I have no contacts in the publishing world and do not know how to
contact publishers or even to try and publish it myself. If I
published it myself, I have no idea of how to market it. I thought
as a librarian you might be able to help me along and provide
advice. I didn't know if some Jewish group would be interested in
helping by reading and suggesting changes, have contacts with publishers, etc.

Is there someone you could put me in touch with that can help me move
to the next step?
