[ha-Safran]: Heidi's article in NewCAJE journal

2010-07-28 Thread Heidi Estrin
Hi. I am pleased to announce that my article about the importance of
Jewish libraries has been published in NewCAJE's inaugural issue of
The Jewish Educator at http://thejewisheducator.wordpress.com/. Look
for the third article down entitled "The Beating Heart of Jewish Education."

Not to be pushy or anything, but if you find the article's reasoning
compelling, you might want to share it with your administrators as a
way to remind them of the importance of your own library.

[ha-Safran]: Looking for Hebrew Book "Olelot" by Margoliot

2010-07-28 Thread Rachel Kamin
Our Rabbi is looking for the Hebrew book "Olelot"
(ayin-vav-lamed-lamed-vav-tav) by R. Margoliot
(mem-resh-gimel-lamed-yud-vav-tav), Jerusalem, 1947. I couldn't find
a record in WorldCat so if anyone can help me locate the book, I
would appreciate it. The Rabbi only needs pages 63-66.

Many thanks!

RE: [ha-Safran]: A Secret/The Secret

2010-07-28 Thread Rachel Kamin
Just to clarify, there are two different movies available on DVD:

A SECRET (2007)
Follows the saga of a Jewish family in post-World War II Paris. Francois, a
solitary, imaginative child, invents for himself a brother as well as the
story of his parents past. But on his fifteenth birthday, he discovers a
dark family secret that ties his family s history to the Holocaust and
shatters his illusions forever. Adapted from Philippe Grimberts celebrated
truth-inspired novel MEMORY. French with English subtitles.

THE SECRETS (2007)
Naomi, the brilliant and pious daughter of an ultra orthodox rabbi finds
herself at a crossroads of life choices when her mother dies and she is
expected to immediately marry her father's prodigy. Distressed yet
determined, she begs that her father allow her one year to study at a
women's religious seminary in Safed, the birthplace of the Kabala in order
to prepare herself for the sacrifices she will make as a wife. Her father
relents and Naomi's life begins to take an unexpected turn. Devote but
lively, Naomi and her new friend Michelle befriend a beautiful, mysterious
older woman, Anouk, (Fanny Ardant) who is ill and living nearby who may or
may not be Jewish, and may have committed a crime of passion. Naomi devises
a series of rituals which will somehow purify Anouk and purge her of her
sins, but as these stretch the borders of Jewish law they must be kept
secret. Eventually this journeys into the forbidden and leads to a growing
attraction between the two girls and more crossroads are faced. The Secrets
presents the complexities of a religious lifestyle in a vibrant environment
of youth, rebellion and desire. Hebrew and French with English subtitles.

Shalom Safanim.

I wonder if approaching an institution like the Cotsen Children's
Library at Princeton (I believe the director is Andrea Immel) would
prove useful.

[ha-Safran]: Jewish Children's Literature collection

2010-07-28 Thread June Cummins
Hi, Folks. I am currently in Paris and have not been keeping up with
email very well. But I saw the most recent HaSafran digest and
wanted to comment. I am very interested in establishing a Jewish
children's literature historical and contemporary collection at my
university, San Diego State University. We already have a sizable
children's literature collection at the library, plus we have the
National Center for the Study of Children's Literature and a graduate
program in the English Department that allows one to specialize in
children's literature. I have already had conversations with our
relatively new Special Collections librarian about the possibility
of housing such an important collection at SDSU. If you are
interested in my pursuing this possibility, I certainly will and will
direct our Special Collections librarian to the HaSafran posts on
this topic when I get back to the U.S.
Thanks,
June Cummins
