[ha-Safran]: Welcome Home to the New Olim (and 382 photos)

2010-08-22 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Congratulations and welcome home to the 239 new olim that
made aliyah to Israel from North America. The NBN aliyah charter
flight arrived in Israel on Thursday morning and included 103 children
in 41 families and 58 singles. The youngest oleh in the group is
7 weeks old and the oldest oleh is 82 years old.
The flight also included 4 dogs and 1 cat.

I took 382 photos of the exciting, historic event and I posted them
online at:
http://www.jr.co.il/pictures/israel/history/2010/a623.htm

I also posted the 382 photos on Facebook for name tagging.
There are two sets of photos and you can access the albums via:

http://bit.ly/olim-aug19-facebook-1
and
http://bit.ly/olim-aug19-facebook-2

If you have a Facebook acccount and you are in the photos or
see someone you know, please feel free to name tag the photos.

May the aliyah from all over of the world grow and bring
more Jews back to their homeland, Eretz Yisrael.

Shabbat Shalom,
Jacob

RE: [ha-Safran]: How to boost library usage?

2010-08-22 Thread agendler
To my mind, the best way to dramatically raise the synagogue library usage
is to bring your library's books to your congregants homes and places of
work rather than expect them to schlep to you. Thank G-d today, in the 21st
century, those synagogue libraries that are serious about increasing their
usage, can actually do it with the help of www.JudaicDigitalLibrary.com

We are the publisher of JDL and we now offer not only easy terms for
subscriptions by congregations, but also first year subscription to Kar-Ben

[ha-Safran]: How to boost library usage?

2010-08-22 Thread Lee Jaffe
I just saw a mention in the latest Reform Judaism about a temple that
has a Havdalah observance followed by a movie every Saturday
evening. If your temple or organization doesn't already so something
at that time, maybe that would be a good initiative for the
library. Getting people into the space is half the battle, yes? You
could put out some books related to the film or a reading list. I've
suggested our local Hillel try this -- they want to have the space
filled more often -- and the Havdalah connection gives event a Jewish
connection. -- Lee Jaffe, UC Santa Cruz

p.s. I think any program with book report in the title is going to
be an instant turnoff.

I'm going to be away on vacation next week (August 23-27) so I was
wondering if anyone would be willing to volunteer to find some
interesting links for next Friday's link roundup. All you would need
to do is keep your eye out for interesting articles on librarianship,
books, Jewish books publishing for a few days and forward them to
Heidi Estrin at he...@cbiboca.org by Wednesday, the 25th. It's a
chance to be a guest-blogger and put your own stamp on the weekly feature.

Please let me know if you're interested and/or have any questions.

Interedition Workshop at the National Library of Israel, 6-7 October

The ESF COST Action Interedition is delighted to offer several
bursaries for a workshop to be held
at the National Library of Israel, 6-7 October 2010.

The goals of Interedition http://www.interedition.eu is to
promote the interoperability of the tools
and methodology used in the field of digital scholarly editing and
research. Equally, Interedition seeks
to raise the awareness of the importance of sustainability of the
digital artifacts and instruments we create.
To this end, Interedition is hosting this workshop at the National
Library of Israel to explore the tools,
methodologies, and approaches to better support a shared model for
the creation of sustainable
infrastructure for digital text.

Applications are being accepted for bursaries for early stage
researchers to attend this two-day event which
will include lectures by leading textual scholars (including Dirk Van
Hulle, Fotis Jannidis, Susan Schreibman,
and Joris van Zundert). The first day will focus on lectures on
topics ranging from the creation and futures of
digital scholarly editions, to the tools being used to create and
edit them. The second day will be hands-on
centering on practical experience in using tools and methodologies
central to the discipline, including TEI,
eLaborate, and CollateX. On day II attendees will participate in a
project slam and there will be ample
opportunity to discuss their editing projects with workshop facilitators.

To apply for bursaries, candidates must be:

· an emerging scholar, which is defined by the ESF as someone
who has not been in an established position
for more than five years, with exceptions for parental, medical, and
national service leaves. The ESF
notes that 'students, post-doctorate researchers and lecturers within
5 years of appointment would
be amongst those included in this definition'.

· you are affiliated to a an institution in a country in
which ESF has a member organisation
see http://www.esf.org/about-us/80-member-organisations.html

Bursaries will be awarded in two categories: up to €300 for Israeli
delegates and up to €1200 for European
delegates to cover housing and travel costs. Expenses will be
reimbursed after the event in line with COST
procedures.

If you fit the above criteria and would like to apply for
consideration, please send no more than two pages
that include the following: a) a brief CV showing your career history
and current academic affiliation; and
b) how this workshop will intersect with your research. Please send
your application to
susan.schreibman [AT] gmail.com no later than 24 August.

ordering information for books in Hebrew for middle school. He wants
to get popular English books, such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson,
