[ha-Safran]: Jewish Libraries in Paris
Dear Emily, I am responding to your posting on Ha-Safran about Jewish libraries in Paris. I'd suggest the Bibliotheque Medem, a Yiddish library and cultural center. They have exhibitions and public events, and I know that there are some English speakers there. Their English-language blog is: http://yiddish2english.canalblog.com/ Their website is: http://www.yiddishweb.com/ They are located at 29 rue du Chateau d'Eau in Paris. Good luck with your trip. [ha-Safran]: Janauary is National Mentoring Month (edited repost)
(A special thanks to Barbara Leff for her suggestions!) -- Marie Cloutier, AJL Administrative Consultant, has reminded me that this month is _National Mentoring Month_. Mentoring has become an under-utilized service of AJL membership, perhaps in light of the massive SSC closings and revocation of their respective accreditation. I'm hoping that after mid-winter conference, certain issues such as budget, convention and restructuring will enable us to better see what issues need to be addressed in order that we maintain cutting-edge effectiveness within the Jewish community at large. This past year, many library support staff (mostly non-members) have contacted me for aid in setting up libraries, selecting OPAC equipment, etc. To be honest, I don't mind answering such preliminary queries, but tend to see my mission somewhat differently. As a committee of AJL, I wish our services to benefit paid members, especially new professionals to the field. I would hope that those involved with mentorship indeed will foster confidence and professionalism among Judaica library students, recent graduates, and librarians in transition. Furthermore, I know how very helpful a mentorship is for first-time attendees to our annual conferences. We had a modest yet meaningful turn-out in Seattle, and I'm hoping that we will as well in Montreal. Again, mentorships can be either a one-year commitment or simply for the duration of the conference. Chapters and regions should seriously look into establishing opportunities for mentorships (or internships) at their local institutions. If you are involved in any of the above and are willing to share your thoughts, feedback, experiences with me, please do so. I'm hoping to write up something for the blog, but need positive input. I think we're all a bit impatient that our new home page is not yet ready, and I foresee that as soon as it is available to the general public, my committee be up and running. Until then, let's all try to push on with what we have. Are there sessions or events that might do well in Montreal connected to mentoring, sharing, study buddies, social learning, and the like? Have any of you gone outside AJL to be mentored? If so, was it due to your geographic location, subject area? What issues other than those concerning selection of online catalog hardware and software concern you? Programming? Outreach? Marketing and fundraising? For the Seattle conference, I called on interested members to form study-buddies or special interest groups to retrain ourselves in modern library technologies and trends. As soon as we have a critical mass of such trained mavens, we will be able to re-establish a more robust mentoring committee. Kol tuv and looking forward to hearing from you. Re: [ha-Safran]: Books engendering pride in being Jewish?
Debbie, Please share your answers with the list. If you of all people don't know what to say, then this is obviously a major problem which he probably shares with many other children. I hope writers and publishers take note. I can think of a few titles you've probably already considered: Chanukkah Cat, About the B.nai Bagels, King of Mulberry Street, The Boy from Seville. What did this boy read or have read to him before he got to third grade? I fear that his problem may not be solved by librarians alone, but I would want to talk with the parents and suggest they examine their priorities and perhaps even reconsider their choice to live iso far away from the Jewish community. [ha-Safran]: re: HIT for looking for direct quote
Several people asked me to post the responses to my query: A parent has asked for the direct quote referring to the fact that Jews are People of the Book. She is also looking for any other Biblical, Talmudic or Midrashic reference to Jews and the importance of books and reading. These responses are: 1. It's from the Koran, however it refers to Christians as well as Jews. that is: both Jews and Christians have a book of Scripture revealed to them. The term has stuck with us, and not with Christians, for some reason. It's also worth knowing that Islam believes that what was originally revealed to Jews and Christians wasIslam. Abraham, all the biblical figures, including Jesus were Muslims. Over time, according to the doctrine of tahrif, Jews and Christians changed their scriptures--falsified them, and that's why Muhammad came, as the final prophet, to correct/restore the revelations previously given to Jews and Christians, and to give the one true Book of Scripture. 2. This term is actually from the Quran, and does not refer to Jews only. See more at http://oxfordbibliographiesonline.com/display/id/obo-9780195390155-0059 Wikipedia has also an entry about the origins of it. 3. It is from the Koran http://www.cyberistan.org/islamic/peopleq.htm 4. I believe that the quote People of the Book actually comes, from all places, the Quran (Koran). Below is one quote, but apparently there are others. And there are, certainly, among the people of the Book [the Quran is referring to Jews and Christians], those who believe in God and in that which has been revealed to you, and in that which has been revealed to them, humbling themselves before God. They do not sell the Verses of God for a little price, for them is a reward with their Lord. Surely, God is Swift in account. (3:199) Just as an FYI, books as we know them were not invented until after the Biblical and Talmudic eras. Although there were scrolls written on parchment, papyrus, etc., -- and toward the end of the Roman Empire, codex books - these would have been expensive items that not everyone could afford. (I.e. a synagogue would have a sefer Torah, but the average Jew wouldn't have had a Chumash in his home; a Jewish King was commanded by the Torah to write his own sefer Torah, etc.) So the main way that knowledge was exchanged, both in Hebrew culture and other ancient cultures, was orally - i.e. students would come to a yeshivah (in Jewish culture) and listen to the rebbe (teacher). This is why the Mishnah and Talmud is called the Oral Torah - the knowledge was originally passed down orally until Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi (born 135 CE) decided that the knowledge needed to be written down. Therefore the Tanach and the Talmud will have lots of quotes praising the value of wisdom and the importance of transmitting that wisdom from one generation to the next(The Prophet Isaiah speaks of the importance of learning, such as 59:21. Proverbs is full of quotes, see 24:3-4; 4:5; 18:15, etc. Pirkei Avos also has quotes, such as 1:4. ). But I would surprised if will find many quotes from that period that speak specifically about reading books. I could be wrong, of course, so if you do receive quotes I hope you will pass them on to the list. Lori M. The launch of the novel has been combined with a $40,000 Literary Prize Contest, comprising three independent competitions: a $1000 Bible quiz, a $3000 riddle, and a $36,000 fiction writing competition, all based on the novel. Details and the Official Rules of the Contest's first competition, including the novel's first 11 pages, can now be found on Gefen's Facebook and Twitter accounts, and on the main Gefen site: www.gefenpublishing.com, from the latter of which they may be downloaded. The $1000 Bible quiz competition runs from January 24, 2011 through February 17, 2011 while the other two competitions follow sequentially. All author royalties from the book have been assigned to the Jewish National Fund for projects taking place in Israel. About the Book: Haazinu looks at the eternal question of why bad things happen to innocents. Through group therapy sessions at a U.S. medical center facilitated by a German ex-priest (now a psychiatric social worker), four visitors (a pediatric oncologist; an anthropologist; an African American Southern farmer cum industrialist; and a Jewish, Manhattan businessman) to terminally-ill patients tell the intimate stories of their relationships with these patients, which then propel the group on a quest in search of God. Based on passages from the Bible and the group's interwoven stories of love and hate, the group's journey to find God takes them to the Caribbean, where pieces to an ancient Hebrew riddle, brought to the group by the ex-priest, begin to crystallize. As the group approaches the answer to its quest, a surprise ending compels the reader to realize that nothing in the stories was as it seemed, and the answer to the quest could bring health, peace, and prosperity to the world. [ha-Safran]: Comments on religious comic books
A colleague who works in this area offers these comments: It's hard to know what qualifies as a religious comic book in the questioner's mind, but here are some thoughts. The only ongoing comic book series in the traditional floppy magazine format that I can think of is Mendy and the Golem, which features and Orthodox boy as the hero (does that make it religious?). It had two incarnations, the original in the early eighties, and then again twenty years later (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mendy_and_the_Golem). It's no longer being published. I located this list of Jewish graphic novels put up by an Amazon user: http://www.amazon.com/Jewish-Comic-Strips-Graphic-Novels/lm/R2HQJ842PT829H. Some of what's on the list is commentary and history, not fiction, but some of it I can vouch for as excellent work: --The Golem's Mighty Swing, about barnstorming Jewish baseball players in, if I recall, the 1920s --Yossel, Joe Kubert's accounting of what his own life might have been like in the Warsaw Ghetto if his family had not left Poland in 1926 when he was an infant (Kubert also did Jew Gangster, which is about exactly what it sounds like) --Will Eisner's A Contract with God and To the Heart of the Storm speak about the Jewish experience in the pre-WWII America he grew up in --The Rabbi's Cat by Joann Sfar is a charming book set among Algerian Jews in the 1930s (Sfar also has an Eastern European Jewish tale called Klezmer) --The Adventures of Rabbi Harvey: A Graphic Novel of Jewish Wisdom And Wit in the Wild West by Steve Sheinkin is funny and entertaining I don't know why this list is missing Art Spiegelman's Maus (which the person who made the query might find irreligious anyway). Also not religious, but well worth reading, is the recently published How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less by Sarah Glidden, recounting her Birthright trip to Israel and her struggle to reconcile her lefty politics with what she fears will be pro-Israel brainwashing. ___ Dr. Don Weinshank Professor Emeritus Comp. [ha-Safran]: Hank Zipzer series
Dear Hasafranim, I just came across the Hank Zipzer series by Henry Winkler (I know, it's been around since 2003). In an interview back in 2003, Winkler said he hadn't given Hank a religion, but that his mother runs a New York deli that her father started, so there's an ethnic hint there, aside from the name. It sounds like a wonderful series, but I just wonder if this bare ethnicity is enough to warrant buying for a Jewish library. Has anyone else bought the series and has there been anything new added to the character? I sure could use some more books for boys in this age group. The Bibliotheque Nationale is very impressive; not just because of its collections and exhibitions, but also because of its architecture and external landscape - http://www.bnf.fr/en/tools/lsp.site_map.html There is also the Bibliotheque Medem with its Yiddish collections.
