[ha-Safran]: Mobsters from Chicago convention?

2011-03-01 Thread Michelle Chesner
Hello,

I've checked the AJL website, but can't seem to find the answer
there...I have a student who is doing research on Jewish mobsters in
Chicago. If I remember correctly, there was someone who did a
presentation at the 2009 convention on this very
topic! Unfortunately, I cannot find my convention schedule from that
year, and that session is not listed in the convention
proceedings. Does anyone remember who presented on that topic?

Thanks,
Michelle

[ha-Safran]: Jewish essays in IT GETS BETTER

2011-03-01 Thread myjewishbooks
Dear Safranim

I wanted to give you a heads up on what I deem to be Jewish
contributors to the essays in the forthcoming book, IT GETS BETTER,
By Dan Savage and his husband, Terry Miller (Dutton/Penguin, March 22, 2011)

I read through it last night and tagged the 10% of the 110+ essays
that I think are of special interest to Jewish readers. As
librarians, you are acutely aware of the pain and bullying and
confusion among gay, lesbian, different and perceived to be gay teens
in your communities. The youtube videos of IT GETS BETTER and, now,
this book of transcribed essays and original writings will also,
hopefully, be of help in our cities and villages.

Without ruining the book for you... here are some notes that I took
on it, prior to its release.
(In the days after Purim, the editors will have readings in NYC
(3/22), LA(3/24), Seattle(3/29), SF(3/29) and Chicago(3/23))

IT GETS BETTER
Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying,
and Creating a Life Worth Living
Edited by Dan Savage and Terry Miller
March 2011, Dutton Penguin

Last summer, each week, the news had a story about a young teenage
student who was bullied for being gay or being perceived gay who
committed suicide. Dan Savage, a Seattle based sex and relationships
columnist was outraged. He asked his husband, Terry Miller, who
shuns all publicity, if they could both make a youtube video which
told teens that IT GETS BETTER.

Terry immediately agreed, a friend shot and edited the video, and
they uploaded the video on September 22, 2010. They expected 100
total videos to be compiled on youtube for the project

Within 24 hours, someone uploaded a second video

In three days, there were several hundred videos

At the end of the week, there were 1,000 uploaded videos

Within four weeks the U.S. White House called: Could President Obama
submit a video to ItGetsBetter.org and the Trevor Project?

There are now more than 10,000 videos uploaded for
ITGETSBETTER. Manhattan's CBST synagogue has its own set of videos
from congregants, The Gap has employee videos, Google and LinkedIn
even have their own set of employee-made videos.

Dan Savage's publisher and editor, Penguin and Dutton, decided to
turn a selection of transcribed videos and other expanded essays,
about 110 in all, with additional resource information, into a book.

The theme of the essays are why gay or questioning or outsider or
bullied or any youth should not kill themselves and be self
destructive, since their lives will and do get better. It includes
resources and suggestions.

The book features contributions by President Barack Obama, David
Sedaris, Kate Clinton, Murray Hill, Bishop Gene Robinson, Ellen
Degeneres, Tim Gunn, UK PM David Cameron, financial advisor Suze
Orman, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Chaz Bono, Bruce Ortiz, PereZ
Hilton, Alex Orue and many more.

There are also several Jews who were selected to include essays.

They include Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, the senior rabbi at Congregation
CBST in Manhattan;

Jules Skloot, the Brooklyn based dancer and choreographer, graduate
of Hampshire and Sarah Lawrence, and member of Jews with Tattoos;

Dr. David Rosen in Ottawa, who writes with his partner, Sean B Lane;

six gay Orthodox Jewish young men have a group essay in which they
discuss life growing up in Orthodox and Haredi and Hasidic homes and
Jewish summer camps, their survival in these institutions, and their
current, much more happy and productive lives.

Also included are:

Barbara Gaines, 53, the Executive Producer of the Late Show with
David Letterman. She writes of growing up on Long Island, playing
clarinet in the school band, and attempting suicide after college.
But if she had died in 1979, she would have missed out on the rest of
a fabulous life, her partner, their 4 year old, and her life at the
CBST synagogue.

Adam Roberts, a Jewish graduate of Emory and star of the Food Network
and the Amateur gourmet flogger (food blogger) site writes a
hilarious essay on cooking a Friday night meal for his parents, his
partner, and his partner's parents. In between recipes and
tangential asides on food, he discusses being bullied in school, and
finding how to express himself in a comedy troupe in college. As he
says, high school is like a cold depressing tv dinner, but it gets
better and you might end up as a plated dish of braised (braised!!)
shirt ribs with polenta (*not kosher)

There are also essays by Michael Feinstein, a piano player (hehe)

Suze Orman, 60, a financial advisor and proud lesbian who says life
is "NOT EASY, but it is all worth the struggle!" (she is very
demonstrative on video and in print)

Andy Cohen, Executive Vice President of Bravo, the cable channel, and
head of original programming who writes of growing up in St Louis and
wondering if he would be Charles Nelson Reilly and Paul Lynde;
finding himself during a year abroad at college; and being himself
for the rest of his life.

[ha-Safran]: Downsizing collection assistance

2011-03-01 Thread Library
I am being forced to downsize a 7000-volume Jewish library that
contains Yizkor books, Russian language, adult and juvenile fiction
and non-fiction, VHS Jewish Heritage Collection and many resource
teaching materials. The JCC needs the library space for other
programming. Can anyone offer suggestions or techniques for this
overwhelming task. The objective is to reduce the collection to 1/3
of its size. I am particularly interested in knowing what to do with
books that no one wants. Thanks for any help you might offer off the listserve.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Help finding book title, Uzu and Muzu

2011-03-01 Thread Uri Kolodney
The title is "Uzu u-Muzu mi-Kefar Kakaruzu" and was published in Hebrew in
1987 (Keter, Jerusalem).
The Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature website says that an
English translation "is available", but I didn't find any further
information. http://www.ithl.org.il/book_info.asp?id=388
You might want to email them and ask.

This text was adapted as a children's play by the same name (Uzu and Muzu
from the village of Kakaruzu) and its English version was indeed created by
Sara Keren (not Kerem).

[ha-Safran]: Looking for poem on Leah and Rachel

2011-03-01 Thread Deborah Stern
Colleagues, I'm hoping that the description below will sound familiar
to one of you out there. A patron is looking for a short poem for
which he doesn't know the name of the author or the exact title, but
it's about how Mother Leah stands at the grave of her sister, Rachel,
who has died giving birth to Benjamin, and vows to raise this child
for her sister. The patron thought it appeared in The
Reconstructionist many years ago but our search of the ATLA database
which indexes it and a brief manual search didn't come up with it. Any ideas?

bibliographic guide (1591581338) and see what areas you are going to
concentrate on. Then decide how many feet for each main subject - and
multiply.
You need to remember that if you're going to include large sets - let's say
a whole Talmud or Entsiklopedia Mikra'it - you'd need more space...
I would also go to the actual current stacks and measure just to get an idea
of "how many books in average are in one linear foot".

Using Cutter's book for this purpose could combine the selection process and
space estimate together...

Uri

RE: [ha-Safran]: How do I get to the newsletter

2011-03-01 Thread Uri Kolodney
See previous message sent to this list on Feb. 14.
Thank you,
Uri

Dear ha-Safran subscribers,

As you all know by now, the AJL Newsletter which was previously printed on
paper and distributed by mail, is now split into two separate electronic
publications which will be posted online only.
The current issues are "Vol.1, No.1" for each title.

Please see the AJL website under News & Announcements for the links
(http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/).

Both files are in PDF format and are searchable within the Adobe
application; all website and email addresses should be linked.
Depending on the browser you use, the PDF will be open within the browser or
'outside' of it with the Adobe Acrobat application.

These two issues are distributed freely to all AJL members and ha-Safran
subscribers. In the near future, once our new website is operative, AJL
members will be required to login with their password in order to access
future issues. Information about the website and passwords will be
communicated later on.

I would like to invite you to peruse the new issues and forward them to
whomever you deem might be interested!

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions!

I would like to thank all people who were involved in the production of
these issues, and especially to Karen Ulric, Linda Silver, Merrily Hart,
Anne Dublin, and Daniel Scheide.

Thank you,

Uri

[ha-Safran]: Retirement

2011-03-01 Thread Phil Miller
February 23, 2011

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

By now you have seen the positing on Hasafran for the position I have
had the privilege to occupy for more the thirty years.

Yes, I am retiring. My decision was determined by two major factors,
my health and the times. Information needs change and the means of
transmitting those needs change, and I feel I have reached that point
in my life in which change is not coming as easily as earlier. It is
perhaps time to pass the baton to someone younger and swifter.

In my formal letter of resignation I stated the following:

"Not long ago I had occasion to refer to a book, which upon taking
from the shelf I recognized it as a volume I had processed for Rabbi
Kiev early in my career. The spine had dried out, and because of the
now brittle paper, it could not be effectively rebound.

"After over thirty-seven and one half years I see myself perhaps not
unlike that book. My spine is not as supple and my skin has dried
out. "Rebinding" is not an option.

"Given my overall health, as well as the weight of the challenges
facing the Klau Library in the immediate future, I think it is the
right time for me to depart.

"These years have had many "peak experiences." Having been selected
by Herbert C. Zafren to work at the College and under his direction
was a tremendous privilege that has shaped my life.

"Working with David Gilner, a wonderful colleague and equally
important, if not more so, a dear friend, has been a delight.

"And while there is so much I shall miss (and, true, some I shall not
miss), the warm camaraderie of my colleagues at our four libraries is
especially something I shall always cherish."

I must add here what a special place in my heart the Association
has.. Those annual conventions of the Association were among those
"peak experience" in referred to. For so many strangers became
instantly not just colleagues but most definitely friends – This is
something words cannot adequately express.

And how awesome (and I use this word in its original, and not in the
contemporary popular colloquial sense) has been the Association's
growth in the past three decades! When I assumed the presidency in
1982 (and after we had straightened out the membership rolls) we had
613 dues paying members. (Do you think that number has significance?)
Now our membership is nearly double that number. And we continue to
grow in strength.

That the Association honored me with Life Membership still touches me deeply.

And while I hope to continue to attend our conventions, I shall
definitely miss our in-person interactions, and I hope we can remain in touch.

To that person who succeeds me at the College-Institute, I wish you
every success, for you will be working among some of the finest
individuals, both as professionals and as persons you will ever meet.

My warmest best to you all,

Phil
