Re: [ha-Safran]: Two recent AJL losses

2011-05-26 Thread aidonna
Sylvia Firschein was a wonderful mentor. She was responsible for
organizing the New Jersey Chapter of AJL many years ago. Sylvia
always had something positive to say, worked diligently for AJL and
kept in touch with the New Jersey contingent.

Dot Ehrich was another New Jersey AJL stalwart. I saw Dot just a few
weeks ago at a Hadassah Education Day. Though ill, her attitude was
so positive and sunny just as it had always been.

These two women exemplify AJL at the grassroots level. Sylvia was a
trained librarian, working in a public school for many years but
still stayed involved with the local AJL chapter until she retired to
Florida. Dot was a self taught volunteer who made a difference in
the lives of many of us from New Jersey who were enriched by her
sharing of her expertise, her kindness and her generosity.

As a former president of the New Jersey chapter of AJL, I will miss
them greatly. When I was a fledgling, volunteer librarian, I
benefited from their knowledge and expertise as they helped me grow
my library, professionalize it and start on a career path.

Dear Friends,

I am proud to announce the publication of two new titles in the field
of Jewish Studies from Academic Studies Press:

A Coat of Many Colors: Dress Culture in the Young State of Israel by
Anat Helman
and
Sex Rewarded, Sex Punished: A Study of the Status of 'Female Slave'
in Early Jewish Law by Diane Kriger

Please find a brief summary of both titles below:

A Coat of Many Colors: Dress Culture in the Young State of Israel.
by Anat Helman
ISBN 978-1-934843-88-8
242 pp. cloth
$59.00

A Coat of Many Colors investigates Israel's first seven years as a
sovereign state through the unusual prism of dress. Clothes worn by
Israelis in the 1950s reflected political ideologies, economic
conditions, military priorities, social distinctions, and cultural
preferences, and all played a part in consolidating a new national
identity. Based on a wide range of textual and visual historical
documents, the book covers both what Israelis wore in various
circumstances and what they said and wrote about clothing and
fashion. Written in a clear and accessible style that will appeal to
the general reader as well as students and scholars, A Coat of Many
Colors introduces the reader both to Israel's history during its
formative years and to the rich field of dress culture.

Sex Rewarded, Sex Punished: A Study of the Status 'Female Slave' in
Early Jewish Law.
by Diane Kriger
ISBN 978-1-934843-48-2
300 pp. cloth
$48.00

A masterful intersection of Bible Studies, Gender Studies, and
Rabbinic law, Diane Kriger explores the laws pertaining to female
slaves in Jewish law. Comparing Biblical strictures with later
Rabbinic interpretations as well as contemporary Greco-Roman and
Babylonian codes of law, Kriger establishes a framework whereby a
woman's sexual identity also indicates her legal status. With
sensitivity to the nuances in both ancient laws and ancient
languages, Kriger adds greatly to our understanding of gender, slave
status, and the matrilineal principle of descent in the Ancient Near East.

As always, further ordering and title information can be found

[ha-Safran]: University Appoints New Dean for SLIS -- New Blog entry

On Monday on another librarian list, a query was posted about career
advice for someone on becoming a librarian. Just by coincidence I
was preparing my blog entry for this week and it covers some of the
questions this person asked.
University Appoints New Dean for SLIS
The new dean talks about his philosophy of management and library
education as well as a reserved outlook on the future of information studies.

[ha-Safran]: Short Story Suggestions

2011-05-26 Thread Joan Tedlow
Hi,

I am putting together a syllabus for a book group I'm facilitating on
a volunteer basis at our local Hebrew Old Age Home. We have about 15
members, all of whom are in an assisted living situation. The group
is quite sharp, but some are visually impaired and cannot handle
reading a 300 page novel.. We have decided to stick to short stories.

We have read Joseph Epstein's Fabulous Small Jews and Joan Leegant's
An Hour in Paradise. I am also considering Dimanch, by Irene
Nemirovsky; One More Year, by Sana Krasikov; and The Wedding Jester,
by Steve Stern. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Beyond Political Messianism: The Poetry of Second-Generation
Religious Zionist Settlers

By David C. Jacobson

ISBN 978-1-934843-72-7 (cloth) $69.00 / £57.50

290pp.

May 2011

Series: Israel: Society, Culture and History

Summary: In recent decades, a group of second-generation religious
Zionist West Bank settlers have turned away from the collectivist
political messianic ideology of the first generation of settlers and
have begun to explore poetry as a mode of individual self-expression.
Based on interviews of eight key figures in this new trend and an
analysis of their poetry, Beyond Political Messianism: The Poetry of
Second-Generation Religious Zionist Settlers tells the story of how
they revolutionized the religious Zionist settler culture by moving
poetry into the mainstream of that culture and how they introduced
into the world of secular Israeli literature images and language
drawn from their lives as religiously observant Jews. Among the
themes central to these poets' concerns are: the formation of a
religious identity based on faith and ritual observance, the
relationship of the contemporary Jew to the Bible and to traditional
Jewish texts, appropriate ways to write about erotic experiences, and
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Author: (Ph.D. University of California, Los Angeles) is Professor of
Judaic Studies at Brown University. His publications include Creator,

Beyond Political Messianism: The Poetry of Second-Generation
Religious Zionist Settlers

Reviews:

In lucid writing and armed with depths of understanding and
knowledge, David C. Jacobson leads his reader into an exploration of
Jewish thought rooted in the teachings of Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak Kook
and his son Rabbi Zvi Yehuda Kook and their disciples. Against this
background, Jacobson explains the framework of the new poetic
phenomenon which has grown at the very heart of the religious Zionist
community, an ideological and political movement which largely held
back from poetic activity from its inception. The writer invites his
reader, indeed all of us, to a challenging experience – of thought
and poetry blended together.
