2011-08-23 Thread Rachel Kamin
I'm not sure if this is what you were thinking of but we just shipped 10
boxes of Judaica books to the US Education Foundation of Nanjing University.
You can contact Gann Xu, the Executive Director, at i...@njuef.org or
302-290-1439. We shipped the books to the Foundation's Delaware address and
they will get them to China for their Judaic Studies Center Library.

[ha-Safran]: Machzorim Available]

2011-08-23 Thread ALBA TOSCANO
Hey hey all!
News from the USCJ Prez-list: If anyone out there just happens to be
looking for Harlow Majzorim, here are two synagogues who are happily
giving them away:

FIRST ONE
Temple Emanuel of Newton (MA) still has about 2000 of the Harlow
Mahzorim available
Contact: Executive Director, Michael Cantor at mcan...@templeemanuel.com.

SECOND ONE
Merging synagogues Adath Israel and Suburban Jewish Community Center
- Bnai Aaron , Havertown (PA), have available: 100 Harlow machzorim
(number approximate) available and absolutely FREE. All you have to
do is come and pick them up. These machzorim would be a great find for:
**small congregations that cannot afford to buy the new Lev Shalem
machzor but want something more modern than the Silverman edition.
**fans of Rabbi Jules Harlow
**communities that need a about 100 additional machzorim and need
them fast and free.

[ha-Safran]: Request for Articles on Nevo Legal Database

2011-08-23 Thread Nancy Poole
Greetings Safranim:

Does anyone out there have access to the Nevo Legal Database? If so, could
you send these two articles?

1.
Assets of Holocaust Victims (Return to Heirs and Dedication for Purposes of
Assistance and Immortalization) Law 5766-2006, SEFER HAHUKIM [S.H.] [Book of
Laws, Official Gazette] 5766 No. 2049, p. 202 (2006) (in Hebrew), available
at the Nevo Legal Database
http://www.nevo.co.il/Law_word/law14/LAW-2049.pdf (by subscription)
(last visited Aug. 16, 2011); and
2.
Lending of Cultural Assets (Limitation of Jurisdiction) Law 5767-2007, S.H.
5767 No. 2085, p. 137 (2007) (in Hebrew), available at the Nevo Legal
Database http://www.nevo.co.il/ Law_word/law14/law-2085.pdf (by
subscription) (last visited Aug. 16, 2011).

If you know of English translations for them - that would help - my Hebrew,
sadly, is far from fluent - but I will rough it if need be.

I am working on a research piece as part of a school project!

including the book world.
I hope list members will take a look at the Wall St. Journal piece
today (Saturday) called Why Software is Eating the World.
What does this mean for the future of synagogue and community
libraries, as well as for librarians? What should we be doing now so
that we do not go the way of Borders?

[ha-Safran]: Cataloging issue

2011-08-23 Thread fredis...@aol.com
Safranim --

I sent an unsolicited review to Daniel & Merrily this week. It's a
piece on "In the Garden of Beasts," the bestseller by Erik Larson on
the American Ambassador to Nazi Germany in the mid-1930s.

I'm still pondering the question whether or not to add it to my
synagogue library (which uses Elazar). But if I do, I won't use the
LC classification to place it. The book lists a designation of E 748,
which puts it in American 20th Century history. But for my/our
purposes, that doesn't make much sense. If it's a Judaica book
(which I discuss in the review), my sense is that it should go into
German history. And while it's about Germany, it's not strictly a
Holocaust book.

Therefore, I'm probably going to put it in Elazar 761.5 (Germany,
20th Century).

I'm putting this out in advance of the review being released, as I
think some people may have received or purchased copies. I also
wonder how many times we discover that books simply don't fit into
our schemes the same way they do in Public or academic libraries.

[ha-Safran]: Beyond Politics: Inspirational People of Israel

2011-08-23 Thread MAZO
Before Mazo Publishers could let you know about a newly published
book, Overseas Press Club (OPC) member Al Kaff wrote his perspective
on "Beyond Politics: Inspirational People of Israel" by Ronda Robinson.

Here's what he said:

Examine a nation through its people, not through the headlines. That
is what OPC member Ronda Robinson does in "Beyond Politics:
Inspirational People of Israel." Her book features 18 Israelis who
are making a difference in the lives of others. They range from the
first Ethiopian to be a Knesset member to an Iraqi-born pediatric
heart surgeon who saves the lives of children who come to Israel from
all over the world. Another character is the "Chicken Lady of
Jerusalem," Clara Hammer, who in her 70s started a charity fund out
of her own pocket to give poor Jews a chicken dinner on the Sabbath.
Her mitzva grew until she was feeding 250 families a week, with the
support of donors worldwide.

"Beyond Politics" shows life in Israel behind the headlines. It
offers a balance to the way Israel often is presented in the news. It
puts a human face to Israel with stories of people who take a stand
for their dreams. These portraits, with photos by David Silverman, a
news photographer in Israel for Reuters and Getty Images, capture a
variety of secular and religious Israelis of all backgrounds.

In the preface, Robinson, an American, writes about her life and the
goal of her book. "I have been searching for home all my life. I
found it on my first trip to Israel in 1994. My soul immediately felt
comfortable there." "It seemed that [American] reporters used tanks,
bus explosions, suicide bombers and security walls to convey the
world of Israel. My intention is to make a complex land approachable
by introducing some of the colorful personalities who inhabit it."

Robinson, a former foreign correspondent in Israel, now is a
writer/editor at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in
Atlanta, Georgia. She has written for national and international
publications including American Profile, Hadassah, Jerusalem Post,
Jerusalem Report, Ms., Rolling Stone, Travel & Leisure, USA Today,
The Washingtonian, Woman's World and CNN.com.
