[ha-Safran]: Jewish Foundation Directory 2006

2005-10-06 Thread David Hirsch
Safranim-

Shana tova and Gemar tov to all. Have any of you purchased a new
Jewish Foundation Directory 2006? I don't know anything about the
publisher, Overview Books and the address given is a PO Box in
Passumpsic, VT with no phone number or website.

The description of the book and CD sound great, but prepayment is
required so I am a little suspicious. Perhaps groundless, but

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Best,
David

[ha-Safran]: Flood at the University of Hawaii Library

2004-11-02 Thread David Hirsch
Safranim-
You may have heard about the flash floods in Hawaii. I wrote to Nancy Sack
after reading that their library had been badly flooded.

Here is her reply:

Hi, David. Thanks for your concern. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the
flood but the entire ground floor of the library (housing technical
services, documents, maps, and the library school) was completely
destroyed. The biomedical sciences building also lost everything on its
ground floor. I can't even imagine how long it will take before things
are close to normal. At least today we were able to rescue a few
thousand maps, photographs, and books from the documents collection.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Help with Israeli History questions

2004-03-11 Thread David Hirsch
Enid-
These are both complicated questions... depends on who you talk to...

For info on Jewish Refugees from the Arab World

You might try:

<http://www.jimena-justice.org/index.htm>

and the section on resources at:

<http://www.jewishrefugees.org/resources.htm>

which includes a downloadable book by Maurice Roumani of the World
Organization of Jews from Arab Countries.

As for the number of Palestinians who left or were driven out...

Rashid Khalidi, former professor at U of Chicago who is now at Columbia
quotes a number of 750,000. An NPR documentary also quoted a similar number.

Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith quotes a figure of up to 700,000
<http://www.adl.org/Israel/advocacy/gl_refugees.asp>

Palestinian Refugee Research Net (McGill University) provides a little more
detail at:

<http://www.arts.mcgill.ca/MEPP/PRRN/proverview.html>

I can suggest several print resources as well if you would like more info.

[ha-Safran]: Information sought on Rabbi Ignaz Grossmann

2004-01-06 Thread David Hirsch
Safranim-
I had a query from a retired professor here at UCLA regarding one Rabbi
Ignaz Grossmann, 1825-1897. He served as a rabbi in Cong. Beth Elohim,
possibly in Brooklyn and Cong. Bnai Abraham in an unknown location. He had
three sons. Rudolph and Louis in the US were both reform rabbis and a third
son in Hungary.

Does anyone know of any biographical sources on this rabbi other than his
obituary in Die Deborah? The professor's main interest is to know whether
this rabbi identified with the Reform movement in his later years. He
believes that Beth Elohim was an orthodox congregation.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

[ha-Safran]: Report sough

2003-08-14 Thread David Hirsch
Hi Safranim-
Do any of you have a copy of the following in your libraries:

"Protecting the lands of Galilee-Proposal for Implementation (Weitz Document)"
It was published by the Settlement Department of the Jewish Agency in 1978.

[ha-Safran]: Help needed in verifying a citation

2003-08-14 Thread David Hirsch
Safranim-

I am trying to find a library which has holdings of the newspaper ha-'Ir,
3-11-1989 and unfortunately the patron does not know if it is March 11 or
November 3 The article is by Dalia Karpel and in English it translates
to : HOping for the Nobel Prize. It related to Yehuda Amichai.

Can anyone help with the citation or suggest anyone else I should write to?

Thanks!

David HIrsch

[ha-Safran]: Inscription from a Church in Sicily

2003-07-25 Thread David Hirsch
I had a user come to me saying that they had visited the San Giorgio church
in Sicily. Behind the altar it had the inscription:
Alef, Lamed, Resh, Het

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks!
David
