[ha-Safran]: Donations

2008-03-24 Thread Jenny Schnoll
I am a volunteer Librarian with a small synagogue in Toronto. We
recently opened our library and are being inundated with donations.
Our committee finds it is spending most of its time sorting through
everyone's cast-offs and not having time to consider the collection
and what we really want in it. Just wondered if anyone has a
"politically correct" response to congregants. Thanks.

Dear Jenny,

Ask people to stop sending their books, sit down with your committee,
and map out a collections developoment policy. If folks still send
books ( and they will) box them, and don't look at them until you're
done setting up your infrastructure with lots of clear policies that you
can refer to and hold up to others.

FYI, if people are desparate to send books somewhere, NOW, refer them to
local charities, thrift shops, used books stores, etc.

Or, if they're willing to pay the postage:

In Seattle, WA, there is a Jewish Prisoners project. Contact Chaplain
Gary Friedman. [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

There's someone in China who posted to hasafran awhile ago, collecting
books for Judaic studies programs: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And, tell your congregants if they REALLY want to be helpful to your
new library, they'll type up an author/title list of what they'd like to
donate to you, and send you the list by email. Then, you can tell them
what from their list would be useful for the collection. But tell them,
too, that you first need to get your systems in place before you can
deal with receiving donations of books.

If you'd like to see a sample of a gifts policy, visit our website:

Good luck!

Ann

2011-08-31 Thread Helen Chronister
I just received a donation of the book, Contemporary Jewish Religious
Thought: Original essays on critical concepts, movements, and
beliefs. This book has a copyright date of 1987. It has 1163 pages,
so it takes up a lot of space, and I have a limited amount of space.
I do not have this book in my collection, but the ten year rule says
I shouldn't add it. Should I just sell this book at my annual sale? I
am also being inundated with Holocaust books, many of which are
memoirs. Our local library and Universities have pretty extensive
collections and don't need these books. I need more ideas of what to
do with them.

Thanks,

2008-03-24 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Donations are always a mixed blessing.

First make sure that you have a written collection development policy.

Second be ready to hand a copy of the policy to all potential donors.

Third make sure that all donors understand that the librarian may
keep the books, sell them or dispose of them based on the needs of
the library. There is no appeal to this decision. If someone asks why
a book was not added simply say that the book did not fall within our
collection development policy.

If you need help with this policy, search the HaSafran archives as
several people have shared their policies.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Donations

2008-03-25 Thread jd
I also run a small donation based lending library - in our case, we tend to
focus on non-fiction judaica, but we do get some fiction too.

Pretty much the path I take is to make sure that the donor recognizes that
we are a library, not an archive. Books need to be appropriate for our
purpose (Judaica). In many cases, donors simply want to pass on a pile of
unsorted books. When that happens, I make it clear that the books will be
sorted, and ones that are not a good fit will be passed on to other
organizations (I rarely sell them - usually they go to homeless shelters,
hospitals, schools, etc - other places that can use "free" books).

The most important thing is for the donors to know that donations will not
necessarily end up in circulation - duplicates, worn, or off-target books
that won't end up in the collection will be passed on - make sure your
donors know this, and (if they care) have some idea as to where the books
may end up.

Another good option (at least for duplicates) would be to post them here,
and see if anyone on this list is interested... (or you could just email
me...)

If you have any books in Hebrew of religious nature not fit for
circulation, the folks at HebrewBooks.org will take them off your
hands and scan them in for their archive. The scanning process is
destructive so it is a good fit for the books that would not circulate
otherwise.

2011-09-01 Thread Helen Chronister
You will receive many replies so here are my thoughts after over 20
years of working in a Jewish library that also serves two synagogues.

The 10 year rule is a good one. In addition there is, usually, little
demand in synagogue libraries for books that offer essays on variety of issues.

I suggest to first ask the Rabbi if he/she wants to have it. Then go
over the table of contents. If you see an essay that might be very
important to your congregation make a copy of it and keep it. I
believe that the copy right expired. It is OK to do it for
educational purposes.

[ha-Safran]: Donations in memory of Dov Klein

2009-07-20 Thread Susan Dubin
Dear Safranim,

Many people asked about where they could make a donation in memory of
Dov Klein, son of Adaire and Manny Klein. I spoke to Adaire
yesterday, and she said that they are making a memorial garden in
memory of Dov at her synagogue, B'nai David Judea in Los Angeles.
Donations may be sent in Dov's memory to:

Dov Klein Memorial Garden Fund
B'nai David Judea
8906 West Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA90035
Attention: Amram

Dov loved working in the garden, and Adaire felt this was a fitting
memorial for him.

May his name always be for a blessing, and may Manny and Adaire find
comfort in the warm feelings of their friends.

Susan Dubin

[ha-Safran]: Donations to Mazon Part of the AJL Convention

Once again we will collect voluntary donations to Mazon at the AJL
Convention Banquet. Please see the message below:

MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger

The only national Jewish organization whose sole focus is hunger
relief, Mazon helps to provide nourishment and promote
self-sufficiency for hundreds of thousands of people at risk of
hunger in America, Israel and around the world.

Mazon is a leader in the global anti-hunger movement. Since 1985
Mazon has granted tens of millions of dollars to emergency food
providers, food banks, multi-service organizations and advocacy
groups that seek solutions to the problem of hunger.

Our support makes it possible!

The AJL's convention started a tradition of its own: we have
generously given to MAZON in Cambridge, Scottsdale, and Cleveland,
and we want to make Chicago as memorable!

We will be placing Mazon envelopes on the tables at the banquet, and
ask you to give from the heart.

Thank you
