RE: [ha-Safran]: Seeing a list of past book reviews

2010-04-21 Thread Ted Koppel
There's also the Index to Jewish Periodicals, which has book reviews
from *lots* of other journals as well. If you use the IJP online
through Ebsco, or on the CD-ROM, you can limit retrieval to only
those reviews published in a particular periodical (in this case, the
AJL Newsletter).

On the other hand, the electronic versions of the Index to Jewish
Periodicals only date back to 1988, so a researcher wanting to do an
efficient and complete historical scan of book reviews would need
to use both paper and an online source.

[ha-Safran]: Seeing a List of Past Book Reviews

2010-04-21 Thread Deborah Stern
Steve Bergson mentioned The Book Review Index to the AJL Bulletin and
Newsletter 1978-1990by Judy Carsh. AJL also published the AJL
Newsletter Book Review Index 1991-1995 by Marion Stein. Both of these
are out-of-print. While we await an updated and expanded index to the
Newsletter reviews, is there interest in having these resources
reprinted by AJL and available for sale? Please reply to me directly
and if there is enough interest I will look into the mechanics. The
stock of AJL publications doesn't include copies of these titles, so
if anyone has a copy and is willing to send one to me, let me know
that as well.

2010-04-14 Thread Steven M. Bergson
I came across the following citation today.

Title : Book review index to the AJL bulletin and AJL newsletter, 1978-1990
Authors : Judith S. Carsch, Association of Jewish Libraries
Publisher : AJL, 1992
ISBN : 0929262301, 9780929262307
Length : 40 pages

I don't know if the title is in print or out-of-print, but it sounds
like an excellent resource.

Incidentally, I found the listing while doing a "Google Books"
search. In addition to that title, they also have copies of the AJL
Newsletter indexed with "snippet views" allowed.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Seeing a list of past book reviews

2009-05-03 Thread Linda Silver
My computer died and this is the first time I've been reading or
writing email messages in quite a while. I'm not sure of the origins of the
discussion about access to AJL Newsletter book reviews that was summarized
by Suzi Dublin in her HaSafran message of April 21, but I want to chime in
and say how important I think it is for there to be online access to AJL
Newsletter reviews. My concern for years has been that our reviews reach a
very limited audience and not the wider world of book selectors who could
certainly use a Jewish perspective on Jewish books. For example, the large
public library database that I use most frequently (Clevnet) has a feature
in its catalog called Online Extras. It consists of published reviews from
SLJ, Booklist, etc. As we know, those are not always the best sources of
reviews of Jewish children's books and they are sometimes misleading. Each
time I read one, I wish that the AJL Newsletter review was also available.
In researching books of Jewish content, I often use Novelist, one of
hundreds of databases available through Clevnet. Again, reviews from
secular media are in it but never reviews from the Jewish media. Moreover,
some important Jewish books are not included and other rather poor ones are.
This, I'm pretty sure, is a result of the available reviews. If AJL
Newsletter reviews were available online, they would be accessible to
database searchers and could be more easily included in some of the big,
popular databases like Novelist. It is worth noting that AJL Newsletter
reviews of books for children and teens are included in the Children's
Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) and have been for about five years.
CLCD is a subscription service so its contents are limited to those who pay
the yearly fee or, like some AJL members, have it waived.
Recently, I suggested to the Newsletter editors that they look into
posting Newsletter reviews on Amazon. This seems like a good way to make
them available to the wider public but someone in AJL would have to be
responsible for finding out if and how it could be accomplished.
Regarding the questions in Suzi's messages from AJL Council:
1) Which reviews do we make public? Why not all of them? How else would
one choose? Certainly not just the reviews that are positive. Negative
reviews are very important as well.
2) How far back do we go? Start with the current and work backwards as
time allows.
3) Password protection for current reviews: Not necessary IMHO. How many
people join AJL just for access to Newsletter reviews?
To add one more thought to the mix, why not consider publishing the
entire Newsletter online? Do we really need to have it in print anymore?
This seems like something that the Newsletter editors and AJL's Publications
VP among others should be involved in researching and presenting as a
recommendation to Council.

There is a print index to AJLNewsletter reviews 1978-1990.

One of my predecessors here at Wise Temple, Judy Carsch, compiled it
and AJL published it. It's an alphabetical list by title. Of
course, you need to have kept the back issues on hand.
Would there be an interest in compiling 1990-present?

Re: [ha-Safran]: Seeing a list of past book reviews

2009-04-20 Thread Susan Dubin
Here is the copy of that discussion:
It seems to be the consensus of the Council that we are interested in
providing Newsletter reviews in an online searchable database.
However, there are several details that need to be decided:

a.. Which reviews do we make public?
b.. How far back do we go?
c.. Should more recent reviews be available in a password protected
members only section?

Nancy Sack will return from vacation in early August, and as
Webmaster, she should be consulted about her thoughts on this matter.
She did email that she has many of the articles in pdf format so no
digitization would be necessary for those reviews.

There was also a note from Ted Koppel:
I don't think that AJL has ever digitized the full text of all the
reviews, but the Index to Jewish Periodicals has *citations* to all
of the AJL Newsletter book reviews - and tens of thousands of other
book reviews. (Reviews 1988-present online) Online availability
through Ebsco by subscription.

Who would like to work on this issue, gather the necessary
information and get back to us with a proposal?

Suzi Dubin

I have not had any new information. If this is still of interest,
would you be available to get the details on what it would take and
get back to me?

I asked the very same question back in July and was informed that
citations (but not full text) for all AJL Newsletter book reviews can
be accessed through the online version of the Index to Jewish

been digitized. There was some talk at the time of taking on such a
project but I don't know what came of it.
