Hello Safranim:

I got a free copy of this new book, “Israel Matters” from our Jewish
Federation, who is sending it to all the local synagogues. It looks quite good
and I volunteered to distribute the info about it to other librarians. Find it
here: http://www.behrmanhouse.com/israel-matters

It is an introduction to topics relating to Israel for a wide audience,
particularly middle school and high school students. It would be a good text
for a class.

[ha-Safran] Interesting article on mentoring

2012-07-03 Thread Stephanie L Gross
Create Career Success By Becoming a Mentor

http://www.careerealism.com/career-success-mentor/?utm_source=feedburnerutm_medium=feedutm_campaign=Feed%3A+careerealism+%28CAREEREALISM%29

July 3, 2012 * by Bud Bilanich *

This blogpost by Bud Bilanich is a somewhat lengthy, yet helpful read for those
who are considering either becoming mentors or mentees. Mentorship is an
excellent benefit of many professional organizations, including our very own
AJL. Applicants for accreditation often request a mentor to both facilitate
and expedite the process. However, consulting a mentor is often helpful when
making lateral transitions in employment (for example from circulation access
to technical services). Some even turn to knowledgeable mavens when
considering the adoption of new trends, technologies or policies in their
institution. It is a known fact that the world is in the throes of a
technological revolution. But we are also experiencing an information
revolution. Many of us feel ill-prepared for the vast changes in the workplace.
Traditional mentoring, reverse mentoring, and peer-to-peer mentoring can
render great support in navigating these new waters in the library and
information arena.

Do read this article and let me know if you have a particular area of expertise
which you'd like to share with others. If you are hesitant to request a mentor,
why not drop me a line and we can explore your goals and expectations?
Mentoring is an excellent vehicle for individual participation in our
organization no matter where you and your mentor are located. One of my new
mantra's for AJL is: AJL: Where every member is a mentor.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Yours,

So the verdict on filmstrips is to toss them--not surprisingly.
I used to love teaching w/ filmstrips, though.  They allow the teacher to
narrate what s/he wants, at any pace, to linger over one slide, pass over
another.  Can't do this w/ DVD's.
I don't think the content is outdated at all, for example, we have many that
show scenes from the lives of historical figures; right now I'm looking at one
I came across: Passover Art of the Middle Ages.
I taught a class about this last year and spent many  hours putting together
a power point on it -- and here is all the material on a lovely color filmstrip!
And no worries about the equipment shutting down, getting an error message,
having to re-boot, how do I get rid of that side bar, etc.
So I think it's too bad, not to mention wasteful and non-compliant with
sustainablilty-- that all this great material is going in the trash bin.
   That's my $.02!
Andrea
PS: Thanks to Robbin Katzin, who informs me that Harvad's Judaica collection
at the Widener library does collect these filmstrips.

CFP: SAM Jewish Studies Interest Group Call for Presentations
Society for American Music Annual Meeting:
Little Rock, Arkansas, March 6-10, 2013

I am pleased to announce a roundtable session for the 2013 annual meeting of
the SAM Jewish Studies Interest Group entitled Musical Representations of the
'New Jew' in Twentieth-Century Popular Media of the United States. This
session serves in part as a reaction to Nathan Abrams' recently published
study, The New Jew in Film: Exploring Jewishness and Judaism in Contemporary
Cinema (Rutgers University, 2012). In exploring over three-hundred films,
Abrams sets out to illuminate a notable upsurge in the diversity of Jewish
representation in film by the late twentieth-century. Most noteworthy, however,
is [his] concern to reveal how the representation of the Jew is used to convey
confidence or anxieties about Jewish identity and history as well as questions
of racial, sexual, and gender politics
(http://rutgerspress.rutgers.edu/acatalog/the_new_jew_in_film.html).

The Interest Group is soliciting proposals for ten-minute presentations
relating to musical representations of Jewishness in the twentieth century in
all spheres of popular media of the United States. We envision the roundtable
as a structured but informal occasion for a lively exchange of ideas. We will
begin with brief individual presentations, then move on to questions and
discussion relating to the topics presented and other areas of interest to the
speakers and attendees.

Your contributions need not be conceived as formally delivered papers, but must
be well organized presentations. The ten-minute limit is inclusive of any music
or media. In the interest of fostering a cross-disciplinary conversation that
will continue after the conference, we encourage submissions from scholars in
all fields; we likewise welcome graduate student submissions.

The following is a list of topics for your consideration:

Musical representation of Jewishness in:
1) television of all eras;
2) the Broadway musical;
3) twentieth-century film;
4) radio dramas of the 40s-50s;
5) documentaries intended for mass consumption.

Please send a title and abstract of 150 words in an attached Word document to
e...@ku.edumailto:e...@ku.edu no later than July 10, 2012. Proposals will be
forwarded to the program committee for blind review. (Do not include any
identifying information in your submission). The committee will select no more
than two presentations from those submitted. Our decision will be communicated
by the third week of July. We look forward to reviewing your abstracts.

Re: [ha-Safran] Educational media

2012-07-03 Thread Aileen Grossberg
Unfortunately non of the educational staff expressed interest so I ended up
tossing filmstrips (and video tapes) in both the synagogue and public school. I
do think even this outmoded technology has its advantages: being able to make
an image as large as the space permits, being able to show details because the
image is large, being able to stop and concentrate on one frame. Though it's
been some years since I used a filmstrip, there was a certain magic for young
children in the darkening of the room and then suddenly a picture appeared. I
guess it was the novelty of something they had not seen before as we used
filmstrips long after they had been replaced by tapes and then discs.

Maybe you can find a place for them in an institution that has not been able to
upgrade its technology.

[ha-Safran] Jews in sports

2012-07-03 Thread Librarian
We're looking into doing Jews in Sports for next year's theme instead of
One-Synagogue-One-Book.

We're looking for books and other materials for young and old that aren't about
Hank Greenberg or Sandy Koufax or Lipman Pike. In fact, we'd like to go outside
baseball, and maybe even find some women if there are any. Fiction would be
good too, but can't think of anything between The Natural and The Art of
Fielding, and the only thing Jewish about those is their authors. We need to
broaden our horizons! Please shower ideas on us!

Hi Barbara -

I had a similar problem when I got a new computer to act as the server for
InfoCentre, another mature Follett program. A tech-savvy congregant on my
Library Committee set up a virtual machine on my computer using VMWare, a
software product which cost about $100 using an educational discount through
SHI Corp. (www.shi.com). VMWare partitioned off a part of the computer's hard
drive on which we could install Windows XP and InfoCentre. It's working fine.
I'm pretty sure the operating system compatibility is an issue for the server
only, not for the client machines. I hope this is helpful.

We've been using Spectrum since it was Winnebago/Sagebrush. The synagogue
system uses Windows XP.

I just received an email from Follett saying that mature software wouldn't
run reliably on versions of Windows above XP (starting with Vista). It would
work, but data would be corrupted, etc.

Then I discovered that the operating system for the whole synagogue is about to
be upgraded.

Has anyone had experience running Spectrum or other mature software with
Vista/Windows 7? Upgrading to Destiny really isn't in the budget.

Thanks!
