[ha-Safran] Webinar for SSC librarians: Using Social Media and Mobile Technology (ALA online workshop) Monday-Thursday November 12-15, 2012 evenings
Using Social Media and Mobile Technology to Engage Teens A Special 4-Evening Workshop with Jennifer LaGarde November 12-15, 2012. Each part lasts 60 minutes. 7:30pm Eastern | 6:30 Central | 5:30 Mountain | 4:30 Pacific Today's teenagers and college students live, work, study, and communicate in a world where social media and mobile technology are ubiquitous. Emerging research even suggests that students' brains are developing differently as a result of their connected, technology-driven world. Even tech-savvy librarians can feel challenged when reaching out to this age group using these tools. In this weeklong workshop Jennifer LaGarde will show you how to engage with teens by speaking their language, using technology to connect with young adults on their own level. You'll also learn how you can harness social media and mobile technology to build innovative library programming and instruction. This workshop will take place in the evenings during the week of November 12, with each of the four 60-minute sessions starting at 7:30pm Eastern. Attendees will be given brief readings and activities which can be completed either during or after the event. Jennifer LaGarde is the lead librarian for New Hanover Schools and is the teacher librarian at Myrtle Grove Middle School in Wilmington, North Carolina. In 2011, Jennifer was awarded the I Love My Librarian Award by the American Library Association, The Carnegie Corporation of New York and The New York Times. She was also named a 2011 Mover and Shaker by Library Journal. Re: [ha-Safran] Women's reading 1960s, 1970s
Subject headings and sub-headings such as 'Reading Interests' and 'Books and Reading' yield potentially useful books in Library of Congress. Consider combining with subject heading Women. The same should be true for journal articles. Hope this is helpful, Lynn (former Librarian of the 92nd Street Y in NY and the Springfield (MA) City Library, now doing admin work for JTS' Institute for Jewish Learning, and missing the library community!) Re: [ha-Safran] I'm confused about PJ Library
Jane’s post touches on an issue that I have begun to be concerned about, namely, the developing glut of gently used PJ Library books. Park Avenue Synagogue families with children aged 6 months to 8 years may all sign up for PJ Library thanks to the generosity of a synagogue family. The first child in the family receives his/her monthly age-appropriate books, and then the subsequent children in the family receive copies of the same books. When the children outgrow the books, many families bring them to the library. I have lost count of the number of copies of The Shabbat Box I have received. Other titles are accumulating close behind. I have been thinking for a while that it would be a good idea for us as a community of librarians to develop a plan and purpose for all these books. Send them to libraries in communities that don’t have PJ Library? To libraries in Israel that want children’s books in English? Ideas, anyone? Note: I’m interested in there being an answer to this question, but I don’t have time to take on a book redistribution project myself. You are correct that PJ Library is for families only. This program is funded in part by The Grinspoon Foundation and some very generous local philanthropists. We have been extremely fortunate in our area. I do not know of anyone else involved in the funding for this program. This past year, I gave a gift to 12 synagogues in our community a book rack with a box of PJ Library selections which came out of our marketing budget. I know that some books were put in the libraries and that librarians have read the books to groups that come in. Othes have the books available for families to read while in the synagogue. You may want to contact the PJ coordinator for your area and see if they are willing to do the same. You can also ask your synagogue families to donate duplicate books they may have gotten at home. Many parents have offered their duplicate books to us in the Family Room at our JCC. I hope this helps a little. If you have other questions, please feel free to contact me. According to what I see on the website, their funding comes from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and other monies donated by libraries. The money from the HGF and the “Implementing Partners” goes to purchase books that are then free for participating member families. Is this correct? Are any AJL libraries involved? As great as this idea is, I don’t have a budget for this purpose, though perhaps our congregation would support a fundraiser. I knew the day would come. Our religious school just cleaned out the closet and dumped several bags/boxes of VHS tapes in the library. Some have worthwhile content. Is there anything I can do with them besides throwing them out or unwinding and using for Sukkah decorations? Re: [ha-Safran] I'm confused about PJ Library
Hello Marga, I work with Jane Pasternak and help with many of our PJ Library programs. The pjlibrary.org website and staff are a wealth of information as is the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. There are some books that do get mailed to a family more than once. In addition to donating them to other children, synagogues and day school classrooms, one idea is to work with the Jewish Family Services in your area and do a PJ and book collection. Families in the community do a mitzvah by buying new pajamas for children in need accompanied by a special book(s) for a cozy bedtime read. This is very popular at Chanukah, but appreciated year round. Send them to libraries in communities that don't have PJ Library? To libraries in Israel that want children's books in English? Ideas, anyone? Note: I'm interested in there being an answer to this question, but I don't have time to take on a book redistribution project myself. I am the Director of Community Development for PJ Library, overseeing efforts to bring PJ Library to the metropolitan Washington, DC area. I love that you looked at our website (pjlibrary.org) and have gained a basic understanding of the PJ Library program. I'll try to clarify... PJ Library is a partnership between the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, which created PJ Library six years ago, and each local Jewish community. We currently send 100,000 books each month to Jewish children from 6 months through 8 years old in 175 communities throughout North America. Most frequently the local Jewish Federation is our implementing partner. Philanthropist Harold Grinspoon funds half the cost of the program and each local community must raise the other half. This is very much Harold's style of tzedakah, where he leverages his donation to encourage others. This actually inspires or creates many new philanthropists. You are correct that PJ Library subscriptions are absolutely free to participants. Receiving wonderful, age-appropriate Jewish children's books in the mail each month is a powerful gift from the local Jewish community to its young families. It says we care about you and want to welcome you into the community. PJ Library will be available to every family raising Jewish children-in-married or interfaith. A family need not be a member of any synagogue or JCC or donor to Federation to participate. Through PJ Library story time programs and events held at JCCs, synagogues, pre-schools, day-schools and in public space, PJ connects young Jewish families to each other and to the wide variety of services and organizations within the community. PJ Library is a highly effective tool to identify unaffiliated and unengaged families. I am currently working with Washington's Federation CEO, Steve Rakitt, to raise sufficient funds to bring PJ Library to the Greater Washington area. Because Washington has such a large Jewish population, our fundraising needs are significant, but I'm pleased to tell you Steve has made PJ Library a priority and he is making good progress. We are hopeful we can reach our fundraising goal soon. Of course, if you can lead us to potential donors in the DC area, please let us know as soon as possible. Once we have raised the needed money to launch in DC, we will have meetings with every local Jewish agency that touches kids 8 and under-synagogues, pre-schools, JCCs, day-schools, etc. We will explain how each organization can partner with us to take advantage of this amazing program. With your collaboration on program ideas and hosting programs, PJ Library will benefit your agency and the entire Jewish community of Washington. It's really exciting and we are getting close. I hope this clarification helps. If you want to discuss this further, please feel free to call me. -- Paul Lewis Director of Community Development, PJ Library(r) Harold Grinspoon Foundation 380 Union Street West Springfield, MA 01089 413-439-1950-office direct | 413-575-3314-cell p...@hgf.orgmailto:p...@hgf.org- www.pjlibrary.orghttp://www.pjlibrary.org/ From: Rosalie Eisen Sent: Thursday, September 06, 2012 11:44 AM To: Paul Lewis Subject: FW: [ha-Safran] I'm confused about PJ Library FYI Rosalie From: Enid Sperber [mailto:enidkentsper...@gmail.com]mailto:[mailto:enidkentsper...@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, September 06, 2012 11:43 AM To: Rosalie Eisen Subject: Fwd: [ha-Safran] I'm confused about PJ Library Hi Rosalie, The following email came on the AJL listserv.
