[ha-Safran] English translation of a Tolstoy story

2013-10-30 Thread Beverly Geller
Safranim-there is a very short story in Hebrew called Avanim, which was
translated by Eliezer Steinman from a Russian short story by Tolstoy. I am
looking for the English version of that story (and there does not seem to be a
short story called "Stones" or "Rocks" ).

Please let me know if you have heard of the original story and what the English
title might be.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Research question regarding Japanese translations of Kabbalah texts
To: "galro...@osu.edu"

 Dear Mr. Galron,

I received your contact information from ... after inquiring of him whether
he knew a person who might be able to aid me in answering a question
related to the research I am currently conducting for my master's thesis.
My name is Stefanie Thomas; I am a second-year MA student specializing in
modern Japanese literature.

The property I am analyzing for my master's thesis features allusions to
both Gnosticism and kabbalistic literature (primarily the Zohar and
Lurianic tracts). In the text "An Entrance to the Zohar" by Rabbi Yehuda
Ashlag (Dr. Philip S. Berg comp. and ed.), four colors are mentioned in
reference to the Sefirot Hokhmah, Binah, Tiferet, and Malkhut: white, red,
green, and black. In the property I am analyzing, four characters who could
be tied to these spheres of emanation by virtue of similar Gnostic concepts
are clothed in white, red, blue, and black.

My question is as follows: In Japanese, the color green, particularly when
mentioned in a context related to nature, can be translated as "aoi," i. e.
"blue." If that is the case here, kabbalistic references to this color
quaternity would apply to my analysis. However, I find myself unable to
determine whether this is the case, as Japanese copies of these texts
unfortunately seem unavailable even via the ILL system. Would you happen to
know how I could investigate this matter further/know an individuum who
might be familiar with Japanese translations of Kabbalah texts?

Thank you very much in advance.

Sincerely,

Stefanie Thomas

2013-10-30 Thread Henry Hollander

We are pleased to offer the following item for your Jewish Art collections:

“Eva Hesse: Catalogue Raisonne. Volume I: Paintings. Volume II: Sculpture.”
Two volumes in Slip-Case.

Volume I edited by Renate Petzinger, Barry Rosen and Anette Spohn. Volume II
edited by Barry Rosen and Renate Petzinger, with Jörg Daur. New Haven,
Conn., Museum Wiesbaden and Yale University Press. , 2006. Large quartos,
gray cloth with black spine lettering, 327 pp., color illustrations
throughout, b/w photo of Hesse, biography, exhibition history, bibliography,
photo credits + 391 pp., b/w and color photos throughout, photo credits. In
a blue-gray cloth covered slipcase. Hardbound. Very Good. Foreword by Volker
Rattemeyer. (70041)

$75.00 postpaid. (Originally published at $250.00)

The Estate of Eva Hesse joined forces with Museum Wiesbaden, Hauser & Wirth
and Yale University Press to compile a catalogue raisonné of Hesse's
sculptures, paintings, and works on paper.

Volume 1 is devoted to Hesse's paintings; it documents 133 works, including
over 20 previously unknown and unrecorded works. 44 student works and 89
works from the period 1960-65 are included.

Volume 2 is devoted to Hesse's sculptural works, created between 1965 and
1970, including 23 previously unrecorded works. The volume incorporates new
photography on a substantial number of works, including individual
photographic records of Hesse's Test Pieces. It also includes important
archival material, including photographs of the artist's studio.

The works on paper are documented in the third and fourth volumes of the
catalogue raisonné, are scheduled for publication in 2014. These two volumes
will comprise some 650 drawings, watercolors, gouaches, collages and
photograms, including 150 student works. As Yale University Press has sold
off their stock of these first two volumes it may be inconvenient to attempt
to complete a full set later.

If you feel that you have seen Hesse's work the first volume should offer a
great surprise. The quantity and verve of her paintings a startling contrast
to her better known and more "classical" sculptural work.
