[ha-Safran] Position Available: Middle East and Islamic Studies Librarian, Duke University

2015-10-26 Thread Hasafran
Duke University Libraries seeks an engaged and knowledgeable librarian for
Middle East and Islamic Studies. Scholars of the Middle East and/or
librarians fulfilling the qualifications who are interested in supporting
the research and teaching mission of Duke University are encouraged to
apply. The ideal candidate should possess an understanding of research and
teaching in Middle East and Islamic Studies and should be familiar with
humanities and social science research and teaching methods. The subject
specialist provides advanced reference and bibliographic assistance, and
will be expected to develop online services and resources, including
research guides and digital collections, and to work with the David M.
Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library on providing access to and
facilitating the use of materials on the Middle East. The position is in a
highly collaborative and innovative department of ten librarians who
partner with members of the Duke community to support pioneering research
and teaching in and about countries outside the United States.

Interdisciplinary, cultural studies-inflected research and teaching
activities which synthesize social science and humanities methodologies
have informed the development of Duke University Libraries’ Middle East
collection over the past fifteen years. Supported by an acquisitions budget
of about $200,000 (not including grants and one-time funding), Arabic,
Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish holdings have grown exponentially, mirroring
the rising enrollments in Middle East-related language classes and
increased linguistic diversity of FLAS-funded graduate student research.
Expanded academic interest in the region across academic disciplines has
guided thematically broad collecting in humanities and social science
fields, not just of printed materials, but also of films, online resources,
and rare historical source materials. Duke works closely with the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in building research-level
collections to support a joint NRC Title VI center.

[ha-Safran] Jewish books

2015-10-26 Thread Hasafran
From: Charna Cohn
Date: Tue, Oct 6, 2015 at 2:28 PM
Subject: Jewish books

Dear Mr. Galron: I am on the library committee for my synagogue
(conservative) and am charged with creating a children and youth
collection. Your site was recommended to me and I hope that you can offer
me some guidance.

Are there any Jewish children or teen classics we should have? Are there
any particular authors we should look at? What are modern families
interested in?

Thank you for any time and effort you can offer to get me started, Charna

[ha-Safran] New Synagogue Bulletins Collection from Yeshiva University Libraries

2015-10-26 Thread Deena Schwimmer

A new online research tool for studying Modern Orthodoxy is now available with
Yeshiva University Libraries' launch of the New York Synagogue Bulletins
Collection, a digital collection of historic bulletins published by several
prominent Modern Orthodox synagogues in the New York City area. More than
2,000 bulletins, dating from the 1920s and assembled from the Libraries'
archival holdings of synagogue records, have been digitized and are fully and
freely searchable.

Prior to the digital era, printed bulletins were a key vehicle through which
institutions communicated with their memberships and the broader community in
which they functioned. The bulletins in this collection contain news and
opinion articles on a range of topics pertaining to the parent synagogues, the
local neighborhoods and Jewish communities, and the larger Jewish world, in
addition to featuring public service announcements, event notices and local
advertisements. As such, they provide a valuable window into their parent
organizations' missions, viewpoints and activities. This digital collection
created by the YU Libraries from a variety of synagogues enables these rich
artifacts to be readily accessed and comparatively studied.

The project has been funded in part by a grant awarded to the YU Libraries by
the Metropolitan New York Library Council (Metro) as part of its program to
expand access to historic and rare cultural heritage materials documenting the
New York Metropolitan area. To learn more about the project or to access the
Synagogue Bulletins Collection, visit the Yeshiva University Libraries' Digital
Library.
