Re: [ha-Safran] the librarian's dilemma

2019-09-11 Thread Amalia Warshenbrot via Hasafran
Amy,
I think that a Jewish library of a synagogue or JCC should have a few of the
Jewish classics like Sholom Aleichem, Bernard Malamud, Shalom Ash, Franz Kafka
Etc. Mine, also, have never been borrowed. As you wrote we have the
responsibility to keep the names alive.
I bought them for a dollar in the discarded book sale of the local public
library. They did not have the same responsibility that we have.
I hope that this helps,

Subject: [ha-Safran] the librarian's dilemma
Dear colleagues.

My problem is not unique, but I’m stumped and am reaching out for your
assistance for any who can help.

My library has good coverage of Sholom Aleichem: a few different “Best ofs” , a
Treasury, and many story collections. MOST have never been borrowed, and I see
that the most recently checked out book was in 2007! I serve a Reform Temple
community, including a religious school, and a pre-school. We are not an
archive – and I am generally clear-eyed about pulling books that are past their
prime in terms of interest. Clearly, it’s time to significantly cut back, but
WHICH ARE WORTH KEEPING? I am no Aleichem aficionado, but I do feel a
responsibility to keep his name alive in the library by having one or two of
his works on the shelf.

Thank you for your help; I welcome any suggestions!

[ha-Safran] Fwd: Books to donate

2019-09-11 Thread Association of Jewish Libraries via Hasafran
Shalom,

Here is another book give away. I've already informed Karen that any prayer
books that do not find another home need to be sent to a genizah.

Hello –

I am looking for a place to donate a wide variety of books—from prayer
books in Hebrew to novels by authors such as Chaim Potok and Philip Roth.
Some of the books are rather old and likely out of print.

I am located in Bergen County and would be happy to drop them off in this
vicinity.

Do you know of any libraries or organizations that accept donations of used
books?

Thank you for your assistance –

[ha-Safran] The Library as a Space for Data

2019-09-11 Thread Jacqueline Benefraim via Hasafran
Shalom,

We received the following request from the Romanian Library Association.
Please show your support by filling out the brief survey at the second link
below:

Comment: Dear librarian, kind receiver

I'm Nicolaie, a researcher for the LIS community of kosson.ro and Romanian
Library Association. I take a deep interest to what is the place of date in
the library's daily activities with an acute accent on what training and
qualification should be.

At the beginning of the year, I wrote a brief study about where is the
place of data in training the librarians as this new set of needed
qualifications entered libraries also -
http://www.rrbsi.ro/index.php/rrbsi/article/view/73.

It is time to extend my research beyond what search engines/databases are
able to reveal. I need to get grass-roots answers from the global scope,
and this is the reason I ask for a bit of help in completing my research.

For speeding up the process, I designed a form that can be completed in a
few minutes. The form is accessible here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfMZfhjRsN1eiIv21V_jptwVfnzs9H3rqNZ-7xuzEdeFhrJJg/viewform

Please, make this form known high and low to all those interested in the
new possible roles of the future librarian.

Thank you very much for your time.
