Re: [ha-Safran] Beth David Library (Reform) in Westminster California is Being cut in half.

Circulation numbers are quite fungible, as we all know. A significant
amount of current circ in public libraries is now online. So the numbers
there are up, but the physical objects aren't there.

This leads to the broader topic of digitization. We've been dealing with it
for the past 40 years (first with periodicals), but haven't faced it quite
so directly till now. We now have to ask a somewhat different set of
questions, at all levels.

Re: [ha-Safran] Beth David Library (Reform) in Westminster California is Being cut in half.

2023-07-12 Thread toby Harris via Hasafran
I have worked at two Reform synagogue libraries in Seattle. The first cut
back librarian hours to the point of ridiculousness back in 2017 and still
has no librarian. The other had me remove 1/3 of their collection to change
the library to a multi-use room. All both needed, in my opinion, was more
promotion from the clergy and staff plus displays in the foyer. The
pandemic certainly made the situation even worse as people were not in the
building for 2 years and even now, things are still hybrid.

My take on the demise of time and/or money investment in synagogues
libraries is 1) Many do not think of checking the synagogue library
collection for specific titles or browsing like they do the public
libraries. 2) Many people nowadays do not value serendipity or the library
experience. They buy books online or visit independent bookstores. 3)
synagogues themselves are changing and having to make tough financial
choices. 4) Clergy and staff do not promote library usage - I cannot
explain that one at all!

This is all especially sad because our Jewish youth are not getting exposed
to good quality Judaic literature from a curated collection. Books with
Jewish themes or characters are buried in school and public libraries.

Thanks to AJL, at least we have access to great recommendations to award
winning Jewish books. We just have to do our best to promote them. Even
sadder than the loss of these synagogue libraries is the loss of so many
regional JCC or Jewish public libraries!

keep up the good work, AJL!

Toby

Grants are what Federations seek, free books. PJs. A new purpose. The old model
they closed down when they jettisoned the Baltimore Hebrew
College/"University."

One cannot fairly compare Federation initiatives to synagogue libraries which
also service adult populations. Temple Emanu El in NY, I am proud to say,
actually delivers.

If you believe in a green future, recycling is highest and best use for books.
Digital alternatives, read or ignored, are the future.

2023-07-12 Thread Sukenic, Harvey via Hasafran
Dan Cohen, Vice Provost for Information Collaboration, Dean of the Libraries,
at Northeastern University, who was the keynote speaker at the AJL Conference
in Boston in 2018, wrote an article in the Atlantic in 2019 that got a lot of
attention, "The Books of College Libraries Are Turning Into Wallpaper". He
argued that print circulation in academic libraries throughout the country was
crashing.
I don't know if that is the same for synagogue and temple libraries.
I know that is the case for the Hebrew College Library. We went from
circulating about 15,000 books a year in Brookline in the 1980's down to about
600 print books circulated this past fiscal year.
It was hard justifying keeping the print collection that we had when it was not
being used.

Dear Judaica Librarians:

My library at Beth David in Westminster, California is being cut in half. They
need the classroom for the Youth Lounge. The Youth Lounge is being turned into
a preschool classroom to make more money for the synagogue as the Preschool has
a waiting list.

The 1,100 childrens and teen books are going into the Religious School
Directors office. The 100 reference books are going into the Rabbi's office.
400 of the 1800 adult fiction and non-fiction books are staying in the new
Youth Lounge. The remaining 1,400 or 1,500 books are going away. This is a
nightmare to eliminate the books that are going away from my ResourceMate
catalog. Has anyone else had to deal with this? I have been the Volunteer
Librarian there for 10 years.

Re: [ha-Safran] Beth David Library (Reform) in Westminster California is Being cut in half.

2023-07-12 Thread Sukenic, Harvey via Hasafran
Michelle,

I don't know the ReSourceMate catalog program. Is there a way you can remove
the catalog records of the books you are not keeping in a batch process, and
not have to do so one by one? Are there barcodes on the books that you can scan
into a file and then upload them to the library system to delete those records?

Hebrew College moved to a new campus in January, a smaller campus. We went from
what had been a few years ago a 90,000-volume library down to about 14,000
volumes. Preparing for the move we had selected the books we are keeping by
putting colored stickers on the books.
I hired some teenagers scan the barcodes for those books we had selected to
keep into a number of files, and I changed the holding records for the books we
are keeping to a new collection in the library system using a batch program. I
was then going to delete all of the remaining records in the old collection
with another batch program.
During the move we were told by the movers that we had packed more books than
we had room for. I knew that beforehand but was told we could bring them over
to the new building and deal with weeding more out later. We had no space in
the new building to store the books so the last two days of the move we were
told we had to pull out an additional 4-5000 books. Those included books that
had the holding records already changed to the new collection.
I am now in the processing of scanning again all of the barcodes of the books
that we kept for the library and again changing the holding records to our new
collection. I will then use a batch process to remove the 50-60,000 records
from catalog that are in the old collection that are no longer here. By the end
of the summer, I should be finished.

[ha-Safran] Jewish LearningWorks ends ties with Jewish Community Library of San Francisco

2023-07-12 Thread Zachary M Baker via Hasafran
Here is an informative report by Dan Pine of the J - Jewish News of Northern
California, on the recently announced separation of the Jewish Community
Library of San Francisco from its long-time parent agency, Jewish Learning
Works (formerly the Bureau of Jewish Education). From the article:

On July 1 the
library, which houses more than 40,000 Jewish-themed titles, became independent when
Jewish LearningWorks officially ended its long-standing ties with the
62-year-old institution.

The change came after Jewish
LearningWorks finished a strategic planning process in 2022. The S.F.-based agency decided
to narrow its
focus to a core mission: professional development of educators.

That meant a parting of the ways with the library.

During a three-year transitional period, Jewish Learning Works will continue to
provide partial funding to the Jewish Community Library.

As the library’s head, Howard Freedman, observes, the JCL is “one of a handful
of community Jewish libraries in the country. We very purposefully want to
reflect the entire spectrum of the Jewish experience, from literature to music
and art to history and religion. Our goal is to reflect, because I respect the
diversity of our community.” Even those who are not able to have direct access
to the JCL’s collections have benefited from the excellent online public
programs that it sponsors. Among the JCL’s “alumni” (and longtime AJL members)
are Nanette Stahl, who served as Yale University’s Judaica librarian, and Paul
Hamburg, who was the UC-Berkeley Libraries’ Judaica specialist.

2023-07-12 Thread rhaus_com--- via Hasafran
I've been lucky; though my budget is miniscule compared to some, I've worked to
get the library integrated into the religious school curriculum and it gets
great traffic during the school year. And because we are a small shul in a
small community, the library is considered a major asset, an attraction for
members and Jewish professionals.
But I have weathered my share of short-sighted brutal budget cuts and board
members greedily eyeing the space for other purposes. It could happen to any of
us.

a waiting list.

This is happening to my temple library too.  We have sold our current building and are renting it back for 3 years, but the outer building where the library filled two rooms with
over 7,000 volumes has been unavailable to us from the time of the sale.  The books are all packed in boxes and stored in the attic of the sanctuary.  The new building will almost certainly not have a room (or rooms) dedicated solely to the library but will
most likely have a conference room or some such with shelves around the perimeter.  Obviously most of the books will not fit and I just don’t even know what we can do with so many discarded books.  It breaks my heart because I started this library and have
added to it and run it for over 25 years and I think it is a fine collection.  I am a volunteer (with a library science degree from 1973) and I don’t really want to even deal with this situation. I am dreading the day when the administrator asks me to do it.
But if I say NO as this point I have no idea who would do it.

[ha-Safran] Upcoming AJL Virtual Events

2023-07-12 Thread Paula Breger via Hasafran
Books About Books: The Soviet Jewish Bookshelf with Dr. Marat Grinberg
Wednesday, July 19, 2023
10:00 am PT / 1:00 pm ET / 8:00 pm Israel Time

The study of Soviet Jewish culture and collective psyche presents a fascinating
yet still little-known subject of inquiry. Frequently subject to quotas and
varying degrees of discrimination, Soviet Jews still participated fully within
the larger society. Most were secular, with Russian as their native or primary
tongue, and with no or very little knowledge of Judaic practice, which the
state firmly opposed. Without spaces to gather or material culture to hold on
to, cultural memory, practices, and thought were formed and disseminated on the
page, often “between the lines.” In this environment, where Judaism had been
all but destroyed and a public Jewish presence routinely delegitimized, reading
provided many Soviet Jews with an entry to communal memory and identity. Marat
Grinberg’s talk, based on his recent book, The Soviet Jewish Bookshelf: Jewish
Culture and Identity Between the Lines, will explore the texts that Soviet Jews
kept in their home libraries, from historical fiction to translations from
German, Yiddish, and Hebrew to Russian novels with subterranean context to
science fiction, and help to uncover the originality and central dimensions of
Soviet Jewishness.

This session is sponsored by AJL’s RAS Division and is open to members only.
All members are welcome.
