[ha-Safran] High schools in Israel

2020-05-19 Thread Arlene Ratzabi via Hasafran
Hello
I am seeking the wisdom of my fellow librarians and educators regarding
boarding high school education in Israel for Americans I.e. English speaking.
One that came up is the Eastern Mediterranean International School (EMIS). If
you have any intelligence or personal experience with this school, can you
contact me off list? Or if you have any other suggestions for boarding high
schools at a reasonably high level I would be interested.

Thanks very much!

[ha-Safran] Holocaust material

2019-05-06 Thread Arlene Ratzabi via Hasafran
I was asked by our Hebrew High School Director for books for his group leader
to read that would present an overview of the concentration camps and a general
history of the Holocaust. She has some knowledge but since she will be leading
a group of students in Europe, she wanted to be more prepared to answer
questions. I have a fairly large collection of books for youth and adults on
the Holocaust but I thought that I would consult our group as well.

Thanks very much,

[ha-Safran] Children book loans

2018-10-24 Thread Arlene Ratzabi via Hasafran
Hi

I manage two synagogue libraries and our policy has always been to encourage
book borrowing for all ages be it the children themselves or the parents. It
has been our experience that the vast majority of books come back. My priority
has always been the more they borrow the better. We want to foster knowledge of
Judaism and Israel and build Jewish identity and this is not a simple thing.

We do not have any adult permission policy. We try and make it easy to borrow
books even though a librarian is not always there. The borrower signs their
name on a card and leaves the card on the desk. The library is open when the
librarian is there and when meetings are held in the library as well as
Shabbat.

material that reinforces positive values. There are many possibilities but

Re: [ha-Safran] Shall We Continue AJL READS?

2016-08-22 Thread Arlene Ratzabi
Hi
I think it is a good idea to continue the virtual AJL Reads and the conference
calls were fine. In terms of the kind of material, I think a mix of content
including librarianship titles and fiction could be good. The subject matter
should engender a solid discussion.

There was an interesting article in this Sunday's Review section of the NYT

[ha-Safran] Book program idea

2016-07-19 Thread Arlene Ratzabi
Hello
I would like to know if any of you have heard of or used the book and puppet
package entitled "The Gelt Giving Golem" for your libraries or schools? Have
you invited the author to your school or synagogue? It utilizes the character
of the golem from Prague to reward good deeds during Hanukkah.

I would appreciate any and all feedback.

Thanks very much and continue to enjoy your summer!

[ha-Safran] Library program

2014-12-08 Thread Arlene Ratzabi
Hello
I sent a notice about an upcoming library program in Queens. I am a member if
Hasafran (Arlene Ratzabi ) but the reply said from a non-member. I am using my
cell phone so my personal email pops up. My work email is
librar...@wjcenter.org.

Can you please make sure my data is updated and the email put on the listserv?
I am the librarian of two synagogues and that may be the reason for the
confusion.

Thanks

[ha-Safran] Library Program Announcement

2014-12-05 Thread Arlene Ratzabi
The Long Island Chapter of AJL is pleased to announce an upcoming program
on Thursday evening, December 11. AJL Member, Karen Ulric, was part of a
very interesting session on Digital Citizenship at the recent AJL
Convention in Las Vegas and the Long Island Chapter felt it would be
worthwhile to have this program for those who were unable to attend the
convention. The program will expand on what Karen presented at the AJL
Convention.

Please see the attached flyer for details.

Hello
I run a synagogue reading group that will be discussing this book and I am
looking for copies that I can loan from New York City or Long Island libraries.
I can pick up and return the books. We will need them until mid October.
I have ordered copies but cannot order all that I need. Also the public library
had only 1 copy which they are sending me.
Thanks very much for your help or suggestions.

[ha-Safran] Women of the Wall article posted

2013-06-04 Thread Arlene Ratzabi
Hello:

I think citing an article that clearly is highly political in nature on the
library listserv is inappropriate. I read the article by Jungreiss and as a
congregant of a synagogue in Queens, NY, led by a female rabbi who was
detained by the police at the wall as she tried to pray recently, I think
the article simply reflects one woman’s viewpoint (a very medieval one) and
is not of value to librarians. How we practice our faith is a personal
decision. I think articles like these need to be screened more carefully
before they are put on the listserv. I was personally very offended.

I expect more from the listserv than to relay politically motivated
articles.
