Re: [ha-Safran] For synagogue librarians--amount of donations confidential?

2021-04-16 Thread Barbara Leff via Hasafran
When I was Library Director, all donations were in addition to the Library
budget, to be spent as and when the Director deemed best. This worked very
well. It allowed for extra-special needs of the Library. If donors allowed
it, we would publish their names in Ha-Safran.

Re: [ha-Safran] Fwd: [west_arch] Archivist positions at San Diego County Archives

2020-07-16 Thread Barbara Leff via Hasafran
Hi Jackie,
I’d love the job but cannot physically do it.

I don’t know if I told you that I should be a candidate for RIGHT hip
replacement surgery but doctors say I’m too old (87) and have too many other
health issues that make them think that I will have poor recovery, or possibly
no recovery from surgery!!! AND I’m allergic to all pain medicines, so I’m
taking Tylenol for RIGHT hip/leg pain, which is not very strong.

Then to add more, I fell last week and injured my LEFT knee so I’m not walking
too well these days. I’m allergic to all pain medicines so I’m taking Tylenol
which is not a very strong medicine for pain. Now I’m getting Lidocaine
injections in my right hip every few weeks for the pain. That is what I live
with. Thus, I’m resting a lot, walking a little but gingerly, and not taking
any project that requires continuous movement, like sitting and standing, as an
archivist.

Thank you very much for thinking of me.

Hope all is ok with you. Please note my new email address - byl...@icloud.com.

Re: [ha-Safran] Questions for Jewish Librarians

2017-01-05 Thread Barbara Leff
I had a similar idea about creating a database of Jewish resources way back in
1980, when I was AJL President. I invited colleagues from academic/archival
libraries, synagogue/school/center libraries, Bureau of Jewish Education
directors, Jewish publishers, and others. We called the committee, “Creation
of National Jewish Bibliographic Data Base.” We discussed it for quite awhile
via the U.S. mail. (We didn’t have the luxury of the Internet or emails
then!). We met at national conventions and once even in my Library in Los
Angeles. It was of great interest. I remember that we reached the point of
discussing potential funding sources!

BUT, then, the 1982 Lebanon War occurred, and all funding priorities were for
Israel's defenses, of course, and none for future resources. I think I may
still have the correspondence hard copies - but doubt that it would be of much
use from 34 years ago.

I don’t recall hearing anything more about this idea, but I’m long retired from
the AJL Board.

I like to keep current - thus my joining this ha-Safran discussion. I still
think it's a very very worthwhile project and, with today’s technology, it
seems very doable.

Best of luck to you.
B’Shalom,
Barbara

A member of the board of the Jewish Virtual Library posed these questions if
anyone can share their thoughts:

I wanted to know if

1. there is a website which combines all digital catalogues from Jewish
libraries around the world, which would allow complex searches, such as "show
me all books on Theodore Herzl's childhood within a 50 mile radius of Los
Angeles"

2. Would Jewish librarians want such a site constructed if not available?

Re: [ha-Safran] Recording of Biblio Tech discussion

2016-07-01 Thread Barbara Leff
Dear Heidi.

I'm so glad you recorded the book discussion at our AJL Conference. Thank you
very much.

I enjoyed hearing it. Makes me want to re-read the book. I especially thought
that you did a beautiful job of leading the discussion. You encouraged
participation and folks expressing their thoughts and ideas. I learned from
that. Though I am long retired, I still find the library field fascinating.

I have downloaded Expect More and am looking forward to reading that too.

Thanks again.

Re: [ha-Safran] Judaica Librarians Bible Textbook

2015-04-28 Thread Barbara Leff
Hello Michelle,

No - there were no textbooks attached to Dorothy Schroeder’s Judaica
Librarianship classes long ago. She gave us handouts as needed and we used
original sources when available. Those classes were sponsored by Hebrew Union
College-JIR for many years, but were discontinued some years back because our
students excelled, local Judaica libraries flourished, and beginning
librarianship classes were no longer needed.

Of course, AJL has many very helpful resources on its website that you can
download and print - http://jewishlibraries.org/index.php
http://jewishlibraries.org/index.php

ALSO - check the website of our local AJL of Southern California —
http://www.ajlsc.org/home.php http://www.ajlsc.org/home.php —
Look at these AJLSC menu items - they might be helpful and I try to keep them
current...:
— Education (mostly online courses)
— Resources and Links
— and occasionally Homepage, Calendar and Events (including some archives),
News, and Archives-Previous AJLSC Events

If anyone finds a college or institution that teaches Judaica Librarianship
today, I too would be interested in knowing about it.

Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish Book Awards

2014-04-24 Thread Barbara Leff
Shalom Rae Shagalov,

I can answer part of your question. We maintain a list of the current national
Jewish book awards on our website home page, along with links to the
publishers' websites, which will give you the honor books, runner-ups, and past
awards as well. Publishers of national Jewish book awards include Association

Dear Anna,

What a great list - and thanks for the extra time it took to create the
Pinterest page. Your page is beautiful!

I've added it to our AJLSC Home Page (http://ajlsc.org/home.php), along with
these few other Pinterest pages of interest, that I happened upon:

2014-04-02 Thread Barbara Leff

Thanks for your note, Amalia.

I already sent the AJLSC Sports Bibliography to the AJL Bibliography Bank, as
I wrote in my Ha-Safran posting. I agree - the Bank is an important resource
for SSC librarians. As I mentioned to Francine in my cover letter, I wish we
had the Bank when I was AJL President (1980-82).

[ha-Safran] Fwd: A general question

2013-12-14 Thread Barbara Leff
Shalom--

I've been hearing similar comments for many many years on this question. It is
troublesome to read and hear but librarianship has been adapting and I think
our colleagues have given honest evaluations and some excellent advice.

Here's something that may be encouraging - another positive well-respected Pew
Report. I think that some of what is apropos for public libraries may apply to
our libraries of Judaica too. We can continue to adapt our programs to serve
our audiences' needs.

I read a short summary of this first in the Los Angeles Times (print edition)
on December 12. (The online edition here is more detailed.)

Re: [ha-Safran] AJL History

2013-10-25 Thread Barbara Leff
To: Dr. Yaffa Weisman

Dear Yaffa,

I do recall that brief history of AJL - but have no idea where to find it.
Sorry.

The best I can do is point you in the direction of several other resources
about AJL history:

1) Institutional Sketch. in A Finding Aid to the Association of Jewish
Libraries Records, 1950-1996. Manuscript Collection No. 115. Repository in
the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.
http://americanjewisharchives.org/collections/ms0115/
This is a short history - 4 paragraphs - that may serve your
purpose.

2) Marcia Posner. The Association of Jewish Libraries: A Chronicle. In A
Celebration of the Association of Jewish Libraries, 1965-1990, edited by Bella
Hass Weinberg. Judaica Librarianship, Vol. 5, No. 2, Spring 1990-Winter 1991
5751 (ISSN 0739-5086) 110-150.
Perhaps you can get a copy of this excellent detailed history
from our AJL Archives.

3) The ALA Yearbook: a review of library events 1979. Volume 5 (1980).
Chicago, IL: American Library Assn, 1980. 55-57.
I am sending you a photocopy of these few pages - perhaps they
may be helpful.
[FYI: When I discovered that the American Library Association
Yearbooks had annual reports of many other library associations, except AJL, I
contacted ALA. They invited us to write an article. AJL President Harvey
Horowitz requested that I, as AJL Vice President/President-Elect, write the
first ALA Yearbook article about AJL history and progress; I enlisted the
assistance of Rita Frischer, SSC President. Our article was published and,
thereafter, AJL was represented in ALA Yearbooks; annual articles were written
by our AJL Board Members.]

If you want more details, perhaps Joy Kingsolver, AJL Parliamentarian, may be
able to assist you in finding what you want from among our AJL Archives.

Good luck!

[ha-Safran] Fwd: Honors for our own David Hirsch!

2013-04-29 Thread Barbara Leff
David Hirsch has done his job quietly and with dedication for so many years.
He's traveled the world making contacts and looking for unique materials for
his UCLA collection. Browsing his collection is a real treat! He's our
favorite AJLSC speaker - sharing his knowledge and experiences.

As Lisa wrote, AJLSC members are proud to honor David Hirsch with the Dorothy
Schroeder Memorial Award on May 20, 2013. Dorothy was one of our founding
members and our teacher/mentor for many years; it is the highest honor we can
bestow upon one of our members.

Correction of typo: Our webpage for information regarding donations in David's
honor, and about Dorothy, can be found here:
http://ajlsc.org/dschroeder.html

Also, we're so proud that David is being honored by the Librarians Association
of the University of California, Los Angeles. That is very special - to be
recognized and honored by his peers in the academic world.

Mazel Tov, David!!

I am passing along two announcements of interest—both about David:

 1. David Hirsch, librarian at UCLA and member of AJLSC, is doubly
honored this year. On May 20, our AJLSC chapter is presenting him with the
Dorothy Schroeder Award, which is given for tireless and outstanding
dedication to Judaica Librarianship and the education of Judaica Librarians
. We are all looking forward to the gala event!

Information regarding donations in his honor can be found here at our
 website: http://ajlsc.org/dschroeder.htm

2.The second announcement is copied and pasted below:

 __

It is my pleasure to announce that David Hirsch, a librarian in UCLA’s
Charles E. Young Research Library Collections, Research and Instructional
Services, has been chosen by the Librarians Association of the University of
California, Los Angeles, as the 2013 Librarian of the Year. This award
recognizes excellence in librarianship over the last twelve to eighteen
months, particularly as it furthers the teaching and research mission of
UCLA, and meets the intellectual, informational, and cultural needs of the
 university community.

The award, conferred during the Association’s spring meeting on April 24,
2013, recognizes David’s continual efforts to enhance the Library’s Middle
East collections, helping to make the UCLA Library the premier West Coast
destination for Middle East scholars and researchers. David also worked on
three exhibits, on Afghan history, Armenian printing history, and Islamic
superhero comic books (which included a Library-sponsored event and film
screening). During the last year, David provided invaluable assistance in
finding a permanent home for the Tahrir Documents Archive in UCLA Library
Special Collections. In his unrelenting efforts to enhance collections, share
research, and partner with libraries in the Middle East, David’s bravery was
exemplified by a recent two week workshop at the University in Basra and
through his contributions to the development of Iraq’s libraries, despite the
obvious danger posed to an American traveling in that country.

The Librarians Association of the University of California is the system’s
primary organization for professional librarian and governance affairs.

Congratulations to David Hirsch, the LAUC-LA 2013 Librarian of the Year!

[ha-Safran] Bookless vs. Pew Report

2013-01-24 Thread Barbara Leff
I urge all of us not to focus on the Texas bookless library but, instead,
read carefully this article posted by our AJL Mentor Chair, Stephanie Gross
(see below), which I've copied to our AJL-Southern California website -
www.ajlsc.org/news.html.

The original article, released 1/22/2013, is titled:
Library Services in the Digital Age
Patrons embrace new technologies – and would welcome more.
But many still want printed books to hold their central place
by Kathryn Zickuhr, Lee Rainie and Kristen Purcell.
I think there is much in the article you'll want to quote to your
powers-that-be who make library decisions in your institution. This is
published by the respected Pew Research Center, a nonprofit 'fact tank' that
provides information on the issues, attitudes, and trends shaping America and
the world, and is partially funded by the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation.
Read the entire Summary, then read the links to the many parts of the Report on
Stephen's Lighthouse, a blog by Stephen Abram, illuminating library industry
trends, innovation and information.

I was very pleased to see that the Los Angeles Times considered this important:
Front page - Not Dead Yet: Libraries Still Vital, Pew Report Finds, by David
L. Ulin, Los Angeles Times Book Critic, January 22, 2013.
http://www.latimes.com/features/books/jacketcopy/la-et-jc-pews-report-on-libraries-is-upbeat-20130119,0,1014616.story

AND, if you google Library Services in the Digital Age, you'll find many more
articles happily reporting this.

Thank you, Stephanie, for alerting us to this, and for your many posts of great
interest on Hasafran.

Major NEW and Must-Read Pew Report on Libraries

This is an important report for any library that serves users (grin). It is
from the respected Pew Internet American Life Project. This is part of the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant and it's important because it surveys
a wide swath of US citizens - not just one age group, not just one local
population, not just one language group or just people who already use
 libraries. It's good stuff!

In this post is the summary data and the links to the rest of the report.

[ha-Safran] Fwd: Jews in Sports - Bibliography

2012-07-08 Thread Barbara Leff
To: Hasfran

When Ellen Cole was our AJLSC President in 2003, she compiled A Bibliography of
Jews in Sports. Here is the citation on the Resources and Links page of our
AJLSC website:

AJLSC: A Bibliography of Jews in Sports: Books! Articles! Videos! for
Adults and Children. Designed by Ellen Cole. Arranged by Joel Tuchman.
 April 2003.  24pp.  Three sections:  Books for Adults; Books for Children;
and Videos, Periodicals, and CD-Roms. Table of Contents, Key to [14 Local]
Institutions Holding Titles, and Index of 22 different sports careers.
Professionally bound. Free to AJLSC members.

There are 64 titles for adults and 36 titles for children, many from the Sinai
Temple Blumenthal Library (Lisa Silverman, Library Director; Joel Tuchman,
Cataloger), and 29 bibliographies of Videos, Periodicals, and CD-ROMs from 14
local library institutions. There is also a 2-page Index arranged
alphabetically by sport.

Our current AJLSC President, Judy Cohn, thought this might be useful, even
though it is somewhat old by now. I finally reached Ellen Cole for comments
(she's in the power-outage area of the east coast). Ellen says she has updates
to this list, especially on women and runners, and will add them when she gets
home and back to work in August.

If anyone should go to our AJLSC website (http://www.ajlsc.org), please know
that we're in the process of updating our website, including repairing some
links, reorganizing, adding photos, and putting many older items in our
archives.

 Subject: [ha-Safran] Jews in sports

We're looking into doing Jews in Sports for next year's theme instead of
 One-Synagogue-One-Book.

We're looking for books and other materials for young and old that aren't
about Hank Greenberg or Sandy Koufax or Lipman Pike. In fact, we'd like to
go outside baseball, and maybe even find some women if there are any.
Fiction would be good too, but can't think of anything between The Natural
and The Art of Fielding, and the only thing Jewish about those is their
authors. We need to broaden our horizons! Please shower ideas on us!

 Thanks!
