[ha-Safran] Wilhelm Neubauer?
Dear safranim, I have come across a Jewish composer for whom I can very little information. His extant works appear to be found in a single volume (OCLC #50304192). 2 copies are held by JTS and HUC. I am unable to locate any biographical information on this composer. He may be represented in the Opernlexikon by Franz Stieger (1875-1983). I do not have easy access to this work and it is not searchable in either Google Books or Hathi Trust. If any of you have any familiarity with this composer I would be most interested. Re: [ha-Safran] help identifying Odessa synagogue
Hi Natalia, Thank you very much. I am fairly certain that is it. Since I am transcribing and reading from handwritten text I easily mis-represent individual letters. What I thought was a "v" is actually an "n" which makes extremely(!!!) likely. And thanks to all of our colleagues who reach out as well. [ha-Safran] Herrn Rabbiner Dr. Max Rosenberg
Dear safranim, I have been trying to identify a Max(?) Rosenthal who wrote some Jewish liturgical choral music. Some of his compositions appear in the collection of the conductor and musicologist Eric Mandell. Date of activity would be late 19th century-early 20th century. The handwriting is fairly difficult to decipher, and it might also be Mar.(?), Mr.(?). One of the compositions is dated 1904. I found the above reference in a record for an archive held by the National Library/Central Archives of the Jewish people. I am fairly certain that the composer of the synagogue of the compositions that I have seen are not by the well-known composer Mortiz Rosenthal. [ha-Safran] help identifying work, manifestation
Dear safranim, I am cataloging remotely what I believe is a pastiche of at least two different editions of the prayers for Shabat. The manifestation that I am working on would have been put together at least before 1926. The volume lacks any kind of publication or title information. I could not locate an online version of any of the printings. My first hunch is that at least some of it comes from a multivolume set (5 volumes?) published by Henry Frowde in London, edited by Moses Gaster, David de Sola. The text is in Hebrew and English on facing pages. I may be completely off track on this. My hope and request is that at least one of you could supply me images of the following page numbers of volume 1. There are several printings (hard to say if they all match). I would like to see pages 44-45,129-128, 130, 163-164, 171-172, 181-182. All or some, or even one of these pages could give me some guidance. Any help that you can provide would be appreciated. [ha-Safran] help identifying Purim shpil
Dear safranim, I have in hand a photocopy of a Purim shpil "אחשורוש שפיל" laid in a Turkish Jewish calendar that has no relationship to the work. The work appears to lack a title page or any other identifying information. I am taking the title from the caption. In looking at OCLC, NLI I believe that it may be from the press of Necheles in Lviv and printed in 1876 or 1879? If your institution has a copy of this please contact me (privately if preferred). Obviously, the site was created for a specific classroom context (as reflected in the page divisions), but it is my hope that it will prove useful to others in teaching and learning beyond this one class and semester. https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://jewishstudiescolumbia.com/jbc/jewish-book-cultures-in-the-early-modern-world/index__;!!KGKeukY!kaRsIOCwW5M7gRSjsSHIkFFPz2eomgJpEKDqnQ1R06kaKVOScFJFJOrmHm0zwO1vK7w$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://jewishstudiescolumbia.com/jbc/jewish-book-cultures-in-the-early-modern-world/index__;!!KGKeukY!mG5fnY3l9YyFX3vKwyvwmuvq90pgQQF5BPz0mlAZDIYL4RITjmp5F6zB-5Gaoao_mls$> My best, Michelle Michelle Chesner Norman E. [ha-Safran] upcoming retirement
Dear safranim, I want to let you know that I will retire from my position as the Metadata Librarian for Hebraica and Judaica at Stanford University Libraries during the mid- to late Spring, 2021. The past thirty-one years of the sharing of learning, knowledge and professional practices among our community have been extraordinary. I am not sure if such collegiality and synergies exist among other library communities. So many of the professional relationships that I developed over this period have crossed over into personal friendships that will continue to last long after I officially leave. My warmest wishes, appreciation and thanks to the entire Association of Jewish Libraries for being a foundation of my professional growth and life. Sincerely, Heidi Lerner Heidi G. Through one of my coworkers here at Heim Middle, I have been asked to assist a small local synagogue to help them get their library organized. Two synagogues have just merged and built a new facility and both had a resource library. Now that they have merged, they have a collection of about 2,000 items. Most of the books are in English, but there are some titles…maybe about 150 that are in Hebrew or Yiddish. I am really looking for some advice and help getting started with cataloging in either of these two languages. I have found some resources at some of the larger academic libraries, like Yale University. But the materials seem above my head, and beyond what we will need here. The Temple has purchased one of those software packages for library organization and building. It allows Z39.50 MARC record transfer through Amazon and the Library of Congress. It also seems to allow records to be transferred through file upload. I am not Jewish, and I have no knowledge of Hebrew or Yiddish. The folks at the Temple have told me they will have someone help me with translation of materials into English. My hope is that we can find most of the records we need through Z39.50 transfer. I am wondering if there is anyone in the AJL Cataloging Committee who has experience with Z39.50 through the Library of Congress. Also, I am wondering if there might be a Jewish libraries cataloging consortium that would give us access to MARC records if we need it. Thank you for whatever insights and thoughts you can share! (the topic of my senior Honors thesis at Tufts), which I was gifted kindly by its author at Hebrew University. Unfortunately, the author refused to give me a digital copy (perhaps due to fear of plagiarism?) so I have scanned the whole paper copy to take home over vacation. I recently realized I’d be able to use the work best if OCR’d (read digitally) and translated, at least roughly, so that I can understand which sections are most important to read in the original. I don’t, however, have Adobe Premium, and all other OCR services (at least those I’ve used so far!) seem not to really work on Hebrew texts. Do you have suggestions for an OCR or OCR/translation app/website that can handle Hebrew, ideally in large quantities? If not for your own personal use, do you know what students in the field use? [ha-Safran] Extension of deadline to complete surveys on digital technology and Jewish Studies
Dear colleagues, Many thanks to all of you who have already taken the time to fill out and return your responses to the two surveys on digital technology and Jewish Studies that I recently disseminated. I have extended the deadline for responding to Friday May, 8 in the hopes that more of you will also fill out the surveys (see links below). I am certain that the information that is revealed through the surveys will be of use to all of you in seeing what kinds of digital projects and tools are out there, and being used or developed by faculty, researchers, students, and cultural and information professionals working in Jewish Studies. [ha-Safran] Hebrew Cataloging RDA now available online
I would like to announce that Hebraica Cataloging RDA: a Guide to ALA/LC Romanization and Descriptive Cataloging is now available. This online resource supplements and updates Hebraica Cataloging (Paul Maher) that appeared in 1987. This new resource aims to serve as a published guide to the romanization and descriptive cataloging of Hebraica materials in RDA by the Library of Congress and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). This resource was created by Joan Biella (formerly of LC), Benjamin Fryser (LC), and Heidi Lerner (Stanford Libraries) and is available at the AJL RAS Cataloging Committee Wiki: http://rascat.pbworks.com/w/page/7836007/FrontPage This resource has been several years in the making and incorporates many comments made on the first draft. A second part containing annotated examples taken from a summer 2013 workshop-style e-forum for Hebraica cataloguers (developed to as a platform for discussing issues in RDA cataloging particular to Hebrew and Yiddish materials) will follow in th spring or summer of 2015. Re: [ha-Safran] how to romanize a shva merachef
Hi Hayim, We do romanize this as bi-khelal. ALA/LC romanization is focused on "sheva naʻ" and "sheva naḥ". Take a look at Paul Maher's "Hebraica cataloging" (page 10). Here is the link to the online version: https://lib.stanford.edu/files/Hebraica_Cat_Manual_Feb_2006_Draft.pdf Best, Heidi - Original Message - From: "Haim A Gottschalk" To: "'hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu'" Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2014 8:44:47 AM Subject: [ha-Safran] how to romanize a shva merachef Dear Safranim, I am cataloging a Hebrew book hat has the word בכלל in the title. The ב takes a hirik and the כ keeps the shva. This shva becomes a shva merachef. My question is: in romanizing this word should it be bikhlal or bi-khelal? My inclination is towards the former, since I've been taught that the shva merachef is not a real (vocalized) shva. [ha-Safran] Fwd: A Computerized Corpus of Judeo-Arabic
FYI - - Forwarded Message - From: "The Friedberg Genizah Project" To: ler...@stanford.edu Sent: Wednesday, April 2, 2014 11:17:00 PM Subject: A Computerized Corpus of Judeo-Arabic A Computerized Corpus of Judeo-Arabic The Friedberg Genizah Project is pleased to announce the launching of a new website: The Friedberg Judeo-Arabic Corpus Website, freely accessible to all through http://www.jewishmanuscripts.org , pending a short registration (if you already have a user name and a password for the Genizah website, you don't need to register again). For our purposes, "Judeo-Arabic" refers to works written mostly between the eighth and the eighteenth century, both in classical Arabic and in the day-to-day spoken dialect, with Hebrew characters (using diacritical marks for Arabic letters that have no equivalent ones in Hebrew), instead of Arabic ones. This first version of the site contains 110 works in Judeo-Arabic, among them the famous works of Maimonides, Saadya Gaon, Yehuda Halevi, and many others, totaling almost 4 million words, with a lexicon (list of different words) of more than 280,000 words. The complete list of these works, with the relevant bibliographical details, appear in the site. The corpus is accompanied by an advanced full-text search system that can search for words and phrases and display their occurrences in the corpus (or in selected parts thereof) with suitable one-line context s and various statistics. The contexts can be sorted by the word following or preceding the keyword, and can be enlarged to display an entire logical unit of that text. For almost every page of every work in the corpus, an image is available that can be viewed side-by-side with its transcription, for comparison purposes. Easy and efficient browsing in all these works is also available. For more information on all the functions available in the site and their various parameters see the site's Homepage. In the first stage, the site will contain Judeo-Arabic works that have already appeared in print, focusing on works that were written up to the 16th century. With time, the corpus will be expanded, hopefully encompassing all Judeo-Arabic titles in the mentioned group. We wish to thank Haggai ben-Shammai and David Sklare for their help in compiling the nucleus of the list of works to be included in the corpus and for placing at our disposal copies of some rare editions of these works. The site was developed and is maintained by "Genazim Digital", the Computing Unit of the Friedberg Genizah Project, led by Professor Yaacov Choueka. [ha-Safran] updated version of Yale Hebrew calendar converter (Hebrew month to Gregorian months, not Hebrew calendar date to Gregorian date and vice verso based on a particular day)
Dear safranim, Many years our friend and colleague Steve Bernstein developed an online Hebrew calendar converter for Hebrew months. It did not go into dates within the month. This tool was very useful when we are given a Hebrew month and year as a date of publication. RDA requires us to be more granular in recording dates of publication, and while there are a number of Hebrew calendar converters online that convert a Hebrew calendar date to the Gregorian or vice versa, I have not been able to locate any that did what Steve's did, aka, convert the Hebrew month to the Gregorian months that it spans. This tool does not function any more, its java script is outdated and I cannot get it to work on my computer. Does anyone know of a similar tool? Thanks, Heidi Lerner -- Heidi G. So, the İslamic scholars take some more info from Tora to add in their biography books of prophets. Apperantly, scholars took some info from the midrashes too. I m now working on a 15th century poem book. (Halilname) All of the book is telling the life story of Abraham. It has Islamıc carecter. But, some info is from the Jewish religioun. Maybe the writer talked with some Jewish scholars in Anatolia, maybe he read some books. We dont know. My questions are; 1) Is there diffrent midrashes? I've found "midrash rabba" in the library 2)Is this one a rigt midrash? http://www.parsontom.com/books/Book%20of%20Jasher.pdf 3)Is there any further Jewish book, which can give the details of the life of Abraham? [ha-Safran] NACO Training to be offered for new-to-NACO catalogers – the first step to joining the NACO Hebraica Funnel
Dear safranim, Hebraica catalogers who have never participated in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Name Authority Cooperative Program of the PCC (NACO) are invited to take part in an online workshop in January. It will be a mixture of recordings and live webinars, and takes about two weeks to complete-- consisting of 5-6 "self-study" periods of 5-6 hours each, and a live webinar of approximately 60-90 minutes each after each of the self-study periods. The anticipated dates of the workshop are Jan. 7-Jan. 21. Hebraica catalogers who successfully complete this initial training are then invited to join the NACO Hebraica Funnel and receive the specialized training that is required to create Hebraica name authority records for personal names NARS, corporate bodies, and preferred titles leading to the creation and contribution of NARs to the LCNAF. It may be worth noting for historical purposes that the use of digital technologies to search physically dispersed genizah fragments and to compare them in order to identify matches was pioneered at the Penn Libraries in partnership with the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Unit at Cambridge University Library and with the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City. [ha-Safran] Training and review for creating original RDA records for resources in Hebrew script (PCC BIBCO and Hebaica NACO Funnel members)
Please excuse cross-posting: To: Catalogers of Hebraica materials whose institutions are in PCC BIBCO and/or who participate in the Hebraica NACO Funnel Subject: Training and review for creating original RDA records for resources in Hebrew script* Creating an original bibliographic record for a resource in Hebrew script presents an array of challenges, and employs special rules and practices. Issues encountered while describing resources in Hebrew script under AACR2 exist also under RDA. Standard BIBCO training materials cover RDA, but Hebraica catalogers will benefit from additional training and review. The PCC hopes that offering a unified approach for such training and review will increase the availability of high-quality records cataloged according to RDA. Pre-requisites for RDA training for Hebrew script: 1. Membership in PCC BIBCO and/or the Hebraica NACO Funnel 2. RDA NACO training to reach independence 3. Completion of BIBCO RDA “ Bridge ” training, using online LC RDA descriptive cataloging Modules 1-4, and the online BIBCO RDA Webinars 1-4 (live or recorded) Methods: 1. Trainers will provide initial guidelines for Hebraica cataloging in RDA. 2. Participants will follow the PCC BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) for textual monographs ( http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/scs/documents/PCC-RDA-BSR.pdf ). 3. Participants will submit records and receive comments from reviewers. *Note: Authentication of bibliographic records with official BIBCO coding “042 pcc” will be used only by catalogers in BIBCO institutions, although all participants in this training will be able to create RDA bibliographic records. Staff at LC and other institutions are hopeful that this training program for Hebraica RDA will expand into a BIBCO Hebraica Funnel. [ha-Safran] RDA NACO trainnig for Hebraica NACO contributers
Dear Hebrew NACO Funnel members/contributors and institutional Hebraica NACO contributors, As I reported earlier (email to Heb-NACO listserv March 30, 2012 ), PCC is working to transition NACO participants into creating RDA authority records. PCC Day One for RDA Authority Records is March 31, 2013 . What this means is that access points used in all new RDA and AACR2 bibliographic records with authentication code “pcc” must be supported by RDA authority records ( http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/rda/RDA%20FAQ.html ). The Hebraica NACO Funnel made arrangements with the PCC Secretariat to offer formal RDA NACO Training, to coordinate the required webinars that have been prepared by the PCC Secretariat, and to supervise the mandatory review period for our community. This initial training is only available for independent and experienced NACO Hebraica catalogers. We have been assigned August- September 2012 . The webinars are freely available to NACO catalogers and you should watch them during the training period ( http://www.loc.gov/catworkshop/courses/rda_naco/index.html ). Joan and I will prepare some supplementary materials during this training period. We are also working on a platform to be coordinated with the Heb-NACO listserv which will serve as a forum for general RDA questions that will come up as all of us transition into the new cataloging environment based on the RDA Toolkit. The review period will follow roughly the same guidelines as when catalogers underwent initial NACO training. Catalogers will submit all newly created NARS to me for review. These will be looked at by both Joan and me; we will send them back with our comments. When we think that an individual cataloger is ready for a formal review, he or she will be notified. Joan and I both underwent the NACO review that was required of all official RDA testers. In the meantime I hope that you are getting yourselves familiar with the Toolkit and other documentation that can be found at the PCC and other websites. Please feel free to contact Joan and me with any questions that you might have. Sincerely, Heidi Lerner (Coordinator, NACO Hebraica Funnel) Cc: Joan -- Heidi G. [ha-Safran] AJL and RDA preparation
Dear Heb-Naco and Hasafran readers, In asking about specialized Hebraica training for RDA, Aaron brings up an important question. Most RDA training during will be done on an institutional or individual basis. The good news is that a variety of RDA training materials are freely available on the web and more will be coming. Last year at AJL, Joan Biella and Heidi Lerner presented an overview of RDA and its impact on Hebraica. This presentation exists on the web as a podcast ( http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/ajl-association-jewish-libraries/id292024484 ) and as a slideshow at ( http://www.slideshare.net/AJL2011/rda-and-hebraica-applying-rda-in-one-cataloging-community ); a related paper can be found in Cataloging and Classification Quarterly (v. 49: p. 675-695 (2011). We will present a follow-up PowerPoint presentation at the upcoming AJL Convention as part of the LC update. You are all invited to attend. Another program on RDA, "Resource Description and Access: Some Considerations" is offered at AJL 2012 on Wednesday morning June 20. Many excellent materials for general RDA training are also freely available at the Library of Congress website ( http://www.loc.gov/aba/rda/ ). The RDA Training Materials Task Group is charged to collect existing RDA training documentation from PCC and non-PCC sources, review them for accuracy, and organize and post them to the PCC RDA site for easy navigability. The group reports to the Standing Committee on Training. Training materials for LC’s own staff will become available when the training begins at the beginning of June. Training for the official test of RDA in 2010 was quick and varied from institution to institution. At Stanford, training prior to the start of the test consisted of viewing the “RDA Test Train-the-Trainer” presentation on the LC website, other LC Power Point presentations, Adam Schiff’s RDA presentations (available in two parts at http://faculty.washington.edu/aschiff/OLA2012Presentation-Part1-WithNotes.pdf and http://faculty.washington.edu/aschiff/OLA2012Presentation-Part2-WithNotes.pdf , and LC and JSC examples. Stanford created a local listserv for the RDA test. Prior to, during, and after the test Stanford catalogers regularly meet to discuss questions and issues related to RDA. We have found this an effective tool for providing ongoing education, clarification, and navigation questions related to the Toolkit. LC provides an online “help” service for RDA questions at lchelp4...@loc.gov . For Hebraica NACO catalogers (both funnel and non-funnel participants) , RDA training for authority work and contributing to LC/NACO Authority File will take place in August and September. Initial announcements about that training have been sent out, and more information will be provided as we move closer to our NACO training period. RDA is still in transition. Many institutions and constituent communities of specialized resources catalogers (such as Hebraica) will develop their own policies and best practices. We are certain that AJL catalogers will continue to discuss and examine their own set of cataloging issues within the context of RDA much as we have since the Fall of 2010. They will develop specialized training documents as topics for these arise in our work. We look forward to joining together with our AJL colleagues and the representative body of the R&S Cataloging Committee in successfully making the transition from AACR2 to RDA. [ha-Safran] Fwd: NACO and RDA Authority Records for Hebraica contributors to the LCNAF - Funnel and non-Funnel contributors
From: "Heidi G Lerner" To: "HebNACO" , "hasfran" Sent: Friday, March 30, 2012 8:04:55 AM Subject: NACO and RDA Authority Records for Hebraica contributors to the LCNAF - Funnel and non-Funnel contributors Dear Hebraica NACO Funnel members/contributors and institutional Hebraica NACO contributors, It was recently announced that PCC Day One for RDA Authority Records will be March 31, 2013 . What that means is that after PCC Day One · Access points used in all new RDA and AACR2 bibliographic records with authentication code “pcc” must be supported by RDA authority records. · PCC catalogers contributing RDA or AACR2 bibliographic records with authentication code “pcc” must evaluate and re-code as RDA any AACR2 authority record that had been flagged as not usable as an RDA heading, but which is needed as an access point in the “pcc” authenticated bibliographic record. These records include a 667 field beginning “This heading cannot be used under RDA until …” Until March 31, 2013 PCC catalogers will continue to follow the PCC Post RDA Test Guidelines ( http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/PCC-Post-RDA-Test.html ). To prepare NACO catalogers for the transition to RDA, the PCC Secretariat has developed a series of modules to serve as RDA NACO authority training for current AACR2 NACO authority catalogers. T he training modules will be available beginning in April 2012 . The training is totally online. It is designed for existing NACO Program members who are making the transition from AACR2 to RDA: Resource Description & Access for NACO contributions. It is assumed that participants are comfortable with creating and updating NACO authority records in the MARC 21 Authority Format, and are aware of NACO documentation and contribution parameters. The training is general in nature, and highlights the differences between AACR2 NACO headings and references, and RDA NACO authorized access points and variant access points. There is a concentration on recording attributes in the authority record using the new RDA-inspired MARC 21 fields. The training should take approximately 10-12 hours to complete (this is a rough estimate) and it is recommended that the training be taken within a one-to-two-week period, with a preference for the one-week period, for the sake of continuity. PCC has specified that a period of mandatory review will follow the completion of the training. *The training is not designed for new NACO Program members with no previous authority experience. A period of mandatory review will follow the completion of the training. This training will not cover RDA/NACO authority work for more specialized types of resources such as Hebraica, CJK, law, religion … [et al.]. Joan and I will work together to provide additional training for creating Hebraica headings with their unique and particular issues and practices. Joan and I will assume responsibility for review of all newly created and updated RDA Hebraica headings for both Hebraica NACO Funnel and non-Funnel members. We are still in the planning stages but will keep you updated as more information on workflows, etc. becomes available. Thank you, Heidi G. Lerner Coordinator, NACO Hebraica Funnel Heidi G.
