Re: [ha-Safran] Tribute to Roberta Saltzman on her 10th yortsayt

2023-12-29 Thread Leonard Gold via Hasafran
Dear Amanda (Miryem-Khaye):

I am immensely moved to see your tribute to Roberta. She was working at The
Library’s Annex on West 43rd Street when it was suggested that I meet her. I
invited her to lunch, and the rest, as they say, is history. She was a
wonderful person and a unique member of the Jewish Division’s staff. Although
I retired in 1998, we saw each other regularly whenever I visited The Library.
Her passing was untimely, but it is comforting to know that her memory lives on.

Aryeh (Leonard) Gold

Dear Safranim,

I'm posting in memory of our brilliant and dedicated colleague, Roberta
Saltzman (1960-2013), who was former Assistant Chief of the New York Public
Library’s Dorot Jewish Division.

She was a dedicated and passionate librarian known for her meticulous
cataloging, research, and bibliographic skills, and her efforts to build the
Library's Jewish cookbook collection.

Roberta was a generous, kind, and helpful colleague.

It's hard to believe that her 10th yortsayt is approaching.

Here is a brief tribute to Roberta:

Re: [ha-Safran] Dr. Menahem Schmelzer

2022-12-12 Thread Leonard Gold via Hasafran
The speakers at Menachem Schmelzer’s funeral were extremely moving and painted
a multi-faceted picture of the person he was. To me, he was a highly respected
colleague. When I began work on the New York Public Library exhibition “A Sign
and a Witness: 2000 Years of Hebrew Books and Illuminated Manuscripts,” in the
mid-eighties, Menachem invited me to The Jewish Theological Seminary Library
and devoted a whole day to working with me. He showed me rare items I would
ultimately borrow from The Seminary for the exhibition, and patiently taught me
new things about Hebrew manuscripts. His generosity and good will were
boundless. Though I have not seen him in some years, I shall miss him.
Heartfelt condolences to his family.
