[ha-Safran] Book Thief

2014-01-16 Thread Paula Sandfelder
Friends,

Now that the book "Book Thief" is a movie, I have a question for school
librarians. Do you think the book is appropriate for children? I asked
this question of the author when the book first came out. He responded that
that was not his intention, but that it was marketed that way in the USA by
the publisher and cataloged as such in the USA. Personally, I would not
have recommended the book for children or even young adults unless they knew
a great deal about the Shoah and were very mature.

2014-01-16 Thread Paz Sol
Hello from Quito, Ecuador,

I have personally read the book, and I agree that this book is for students
older than 15. There is also the issue of death, since the narrator of the book
is death itself. It is a good work of fiction.

Kind regards,

Sol

2014-01-16 Thread Andrea Rapp
I classify and shelve it with the adult fiction, which is what its author
intended.
My understanding is that American publishers us the YA designation for
marketing, and any book whose main character is a young person will get that
label today.  Were The Diary of Anne Frank, or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn to be
published today, they would be classified as YA books.

Paula --

You're right about his intent. He mentioned it at his acceptance speech at the
Conference in Phoenix.

It was the first STA Teen Book Awardee, so was not intended for a younger
audience. Most of the "Older Readers" STA-winning books have been for "Older
Children", which I always took to mean the 10-14 group.

In our Library we put it in the Adult Fiction section. My sense is that there's
more of an audience there.

2014-01-16 Thread Toby Harris
I have it under adult as well. I find it really irritating when parents tell
me how they’re reading it out loud to their mature 3rd or 4th grader and isn’t
that wonderful?! I tell them how many great choices there are for that age
group and kids will get much more out of it if they wait until high school.
Same with Diary of Anne Frank. Arghhh.

2014-01-16 Thread Amalia Warshenbrot
Paula,
First let me tell you that I was delighted to see your name on Hasafran. Most
of our YA books collect dust on the shelves. When I moved it to the adult
section not even one copy stayed on the shelf. I can imagine how Toby felt when
parents read it to their 3rd-4th grade "mature" children. Will they take them
to the movie? I think that the intelligent kids under the age of 14 will get
the aspect of friendship, but the rest will be lost.

We read "The Book Thief" in my high school book discussion group and the
students loved it. It was also taught in our 10th grade English classes.
I would highly recommend it for young adults.
