2023-12-09 Thread Annette Goldsmith via Hasafran
 Michelle and friends,

I recently donated twenty-odd boxes of Jewish books to the National Council
of Jewish Women thrift shops. I am right in Los Angeles and they even came
and picked the books up! Here is the page that lists what they accept
. I recommend you call the nearest
location (rather than just filling out an online form) and talk to them
about donating your books. That is how I learned that they do not accept
prayer books.

Chag sameach!

[ha-Safran] Getting Rid of 1, 500 Used Judaica Books for Adults Where?

2023-12-09 Thread Hindishe Lee via Hasafran
FYI:
Please see email below I sent in reply to Michelle Sandler re: Kulanu org.
Another possibility: IDF soldiers have been requesting siddurim, Tehilim, and
Chumashim. If you have extras, donating them is a mitzvah. But you have to find
out logistics getting the books there. I am currently collecting surplus
sefarim at Stern College Library (YU) to donate to the IDF. A Stern student is
arranging the logistics of EL AL shipping them to Israel. If you’re interested,
contact
Yiskah Lundell ‭(608) 341-6821‬.
She might be able to advise you.
Good luck.

Re: [ha-Safran] Getting Rid of 1, 500 Used Judaica Books for Adults Where?

2023-12-09 Thread Maxine Wolfson via Hasafran
That's about what we dealt with last year.
--First, we had a book sale for the congregation.
--Then, we set up an account with Better World Books, and sent them a list
of titles to their antiquarian section. They are taking books with ISBNs,
but only some. We may make some money out of that.
--Next, we contacted the Internet Archive, who have wanted about 2 cartons
worth.
--Finally, we found a veterans' organization with a thrift shop for the
rest.
--Of course, any sacred books go into the geniza. If your temple does not
have one, check with your local Chabad.

This year, one of our congregants donated a goodly number of books, and
we're having a book sale during Hanukkah.

So find a way to give your congregation first pick, and if you don't have
the time to go through the rest of that mishegos, look for a local charity
that will take them.

Re: [ha-Safran] Getting Rid of 1, 500 Used Judaica Books for Adults Where?

2023-12-09 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
I am going through the same thing at the "request" of our new rabbi who feels
that Sefaria is adequate for most text study, so-called coffee table books just
take up space and there is no need for multi-volume items.

For books that still have some value i.e. are not outdated or classics, maybe
there is a book drive that raises money for scholarships, Better World Books
might have a drop off at a nearby public library or there could be a book
dealer who might be interested.

I do feel your pain.  I think a lot of us are going through  similar challenges
right now because of space needs and/or the perception that books are outdated.

Re: [ha-Safran] Getting Rid of 1, 500 Used Judaica Books for Adults Where?

2023-12-09 Thread Daniel Stuhlman via Hasafran
Hanukkah samah!

It sad that no one really wants old books. I got into the business of
selling books when 500 books were suddenly dropped on me. Some of books
are still unsold and sitting on the shelf.

Good luck I hope you find a good home for them.

[ha-Safran] Getting Rid of 1, 500 Used Judaica Books for Adults Where?

2023-12-09 Thread Michelle Sandler via Hasafran
Happy Hanukkah:

I am getting rid of half of my Reform Synagogue Library. The Library room
is needed for a Youth Lounge/Classroom/Meeting Room. I have 1,500 adult
Judaica books to get rid of. Most of the books were published pre ISBN. I
live in Southern California an hour from Los Angeles. Where do I take them
to be donated or where can I sell them cheaply? I am not necessarily
looking for payment, just a way not to have to put them in the dumpster.
They are sitting in a storage shed at the synagogue and the space is needed
for other things. I have already tried the Jewish Federation of Orange
County and the one in Long Beach, the Jewish Community Center of Orange
County, and the one in Long Beach. Heritage Point Jewish Home for the Aged
in Orange County. Lastly, the Jewish Studies Department at the University
of California in Irvine. All of these locations have turned me down.
