[ha-Safran] Graphic novels for 3rd & 4th graders

2018-01-30 Thread Eva Eisenstein
Hi all:

Besides the Hereville series (loved by boys and girls) and the Harvey series,
our 3rd and 4th graders read the following from the library:

City of Spies by Susan Kim, Laurence Klavan, and Pascal Dizin. First Second,
2010
A Jewish detective story involving Nazi spies in NYC with Evelyn, a young girl,
and Zirconium man who track them down.

The Golem's Mighty Swing by James Sturm. Drawn and Quarterly, 2003
More sophisticated kids will get something out of this book about a Jewish
traveling baseball team in the 1920's dealing with anti-semitism in the
Michigan countryside.

Resistance, Defiance, and Victory. Three books in a series by Carla Jablonski
and Leland Purvis. First Second, 2010
Kids in France fighting the baddies (Nazis) during WWII. No "graphic" violence.
Boys love this series.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire by Jessica Gunderson. Capstone Press, 2006
Slim paperback often borrowed by girls.

Lily Renee, Escape Artist: From Holocaust Survivor to Comic Book Pioneer by
Trina Robbins. Graphic Universe, 2011
Again, girls enjoy this book. From Vienna, Austria to England via the
Kindertransport and then New York, this is a graphic biography. A bit of Nazi
activity at the beginning.

Note:
A preponderance of graphic novels unfortunately touches on the Shoah, but
children 4th grade and up, with their parents' OK, read the above with great
interest. There are other titles, more obviously about the Shoah, which are in
our collection, but are for older teens or adults.

Re: [ha-Safran] Graphic novels similar to "Rabbi Harvey" series

2018-01-30 Thread Steven M. Bergson

Friends: I was asked to post the responses to my list-query:

Does anyone have recommendations for other graphic “novels” along the lines of
the Rabbi Harvey series?  They continue to be such a big hit with boys who are
usually non-readers, and I’d love to be able to offer additional options. The
Hereville books are great for girls, but not so inviting to boys.  Suggestions?
 **
That seems a bit vague to me.
Rabbi Harvey is an elementary level graphic anthology of adaptations of
traditional Jewish folk tales set in The Old West.
There's nothing exactly like it (aside from the 2 other books in the series).
Which books are "like it" depends on whether the patron is looking for other
folk tale adaptations, other Jewish Westerns, other Jewish anthologies, or
simply other Jewish graphic novels with a male protagonist.
A great place to start are the 3 "Jewish graphica" bibliographies in the AJL's
online bibliography bank :
http://databases.jewishlibraries.org/sites/default/files/bibliographies/jewish_graphic_books.pdf

http://databases.jewishlibraries.org/sites/default/files/bibliographies/JewishGraphicNovels.pdf

http://databases.jewishlibraries.org/sites/default/files/bibliographies/jewish_graphic_novels.pdf

Alas, all 3 of them were last updated 10 years ago and are missing information
about newer works.
I aim to try to update my list later this year (by the end of February, if
possible).
There hasn't been a lot of Jewish graphic adaptations of folk tales, certainly
not in book form. Thus, I edited  a book of new & old adaptations to see if
there was any market for such a work. The book is titled Jewish Comix Anthology
volume 1, though I don't think you'll currently find an affordable copy in any
stores. By the end of the year, a cheaper paperback edition should be hitting
stores.
As well, a 2nd volume (all-new adaptations, all science-fiction) should be
published by the end of the summer.

I’d suggest Hereville series by Barry Deutsch: “How Mirka got her sword”,
“How Mirka met a meteorite”, “How Mirka caught a fish”.

This is a super old book, but boys really like it:

Re: [ha-Safran] Graphic novels

2016-12-14 Thread Amy Turim
Hi Arlene -

That's pretty advanced reading for a 2nd grader. I've got a few to add to
the list, but definitely take a look at them first - I'm quite careful about
where I shelve the graphic novels in my library. Rabbi Harvey and Barry
Deutsch are fine in the YA section, but so many of them are visually or
contextually "graphic" that I keep them in an open space in the adult book
area, where I can keep an eye on who's looking...

Here are some ideas:

LILY RENEE; ESCAPE ARTIST by Trina Robbins

MENDEL'S DAUGHTER; A MEMOIR by Martin Lemelman

ANNE FRANK: THE ANNE FRANK HOUSE AUTORIZED GRAPHIC BIOGRAPHY
by Sid Jacobson

JEWS IN AMERICA: A CARTOON HISTORY by David Gantz

The first one should be fun for the student. MENDEL'S DAUGHTER is a
re-telling of a Holocaust story - including a lot of iconography -- and the
next two are good to have on hand, but probably not right for this student.

I've really loaded up on the Anne Frank books that are appropriate for
younger ages. So many girls eagerly check out the Diary and are discouraged
by the difficulty and density, and my fear is that they'll never pick it up
again. I'm very pleased to be able to steer them to alternative "Anne"
books.

Good luck, Arlene - let's hope for more graphic novels. (Rabbi Harvey is a
godsend for struggling readers!)

Please go to
http://databases.jewishlibraries.org/sites/default/files/bibliographies/jewish_graphic_books.pdf

At the bottom of the bibliography, there are 2 sections : Children's Fiction

Some are more appropriate for Grade 2 than others, but it's a short list to

Re: [ha-Safran] Graphic novels for children

2014-12-01 Thread Enid Sperber
Hi Arlene and Steven,

The three bibliographies for graphic novels have now all been linked up to
the Bibliography Bank. If you have trouble locating them please contact me
and I will try to help you find them.
I am still in the process of linking all bibliographies to the new
website. It is almost complete but is slow going.

A general note: Rutu Modan's new book *The Property* is outstanding and a
strong recommendation for libraries that carry Jewish graphic novels. It
would not be of interest, however, to elementary school age readers but
very suitable for teens and adults.

[ha-Safran] Graphic novels for children

2014-11-19 Thread WJC Librarian
Hello:
I have a student in Hebrew School around nine years old (third grade) who
loved the Barry Deutsch graphic novels of Hereville. He asked if there are more
or other graphic novels that he can read. I cannot find others with Jewish
content other than the Rabbi Harvey books. Does anyone have any other
suggestions?

Thanks for your help.
Arlene
