*AJL Presents: 2023 RAS Reference Award
Monday, April 8, 2024
3:00 pm PT / 6:00 pm ET

An event celebrating the 2023 winners of AJL's Annual Reference Award. Wartime
North Africa, the first-ever collection of primary documents on North African
history and the Holocaust, gives voice to the diversity of those
involved—Muslims, Christians, and Jews; women, men, and children; black, brown,
and white; the unknown and the notable; locals, refugees, the displaced, and
the interned; soldiers, officers, bureaucrats, volunteer fighters, and the
forcibly recruited. Translated from Darija, Tamazight (Berber), Italian, and
Yiddish, or transcribed from their original English, these writings shed light
on how war, occupation, race laws, internment, and Vichy French, Italian
fascist, and German Nazi rule were experienced day by day across North Africa.
Though some selections are drawn from published books, including memoirs,
diaries, and collections of poetry, most have never been published before, nor
previously translated into English. These human experiences, combined, make up
the history of wartime North Africa.

This event is sponsored by AJL's RAS Division and is open to members and the
public.

AJL Capital Area Chapter Presents: A Daughter's Kaddish with author Sarah
Birnbach
Sunday, December 3, 2023
4:00 pm PT / 7:00 pm ET

A woman breaks with Jewish tradition to honor her late father in this moving
memoir of faith, grief, and transformation.

A Daughter’s Kaddish recounts Sarah Birnbach’s year-long odyssey to persevere
through an unfamiliar world of Jewish prayer. To honor her beloved father,
Sarah commits to reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish twice a day in synagogue for
eleven months—a Jewish mourning ritual that was historically reserved for
sons—despite her father’s initial request that she hire someone male to do so.
Throughout her year of devotion, Sarah takes comfort in the loving memories of
her childhood while at the same time grappling with some very painful
ones—ultimately discovering how the path of faith and grief can lead to true
healing.

This session is sponsored by AJL Capital Area Chapter and Classrooms Without
Borders with support of AJL national and is free and open to the public.

Books About Books: The Soviet Jewish Bookshelf with Dr. Marat Grinberg
Wednesday, July 19, 2023
10:00 am PT / 1:00 pm ET / 8:00 pm Israel Time

The study of Soviet Jewish culture and collective psyche presents a fascinating
yet still little-known subject of inquiry. Frequently subject to quotas and
varying degrees of discrimination, Soviet Jews still participated fully within
the larger society. Most were secular, with Russian as their native or primary
tongue, and with no or very little knowledge of Judaic practice, which the
state firmly opposed. Without spaces to gather or material culture to hold on
to, cultural memory, practices, and thought were formed and disseminated on the
page, often “between the lines.” In this environment, where Judaism had been
all but destroyed and a public Jewish presence routinely delegitimized, reading
provided many Soviet Jews with an entry to communal memory and identity. Marat
Grinberg’s talk, based on his recent book, The Soviet Jewish Bookshelf: Jewish
Culture and Identity Between the Lines, will explore the texts that Soviet Jews
kept in their home libraries, from historical fiction to translations from
German, Yiddish, and Hebrew to Russian novels with subterranean context to
science fiction, and help to uncover the originality and central dimensions of
Soviet Jewishness.

This session is sponsored by AJL’s RAS Division and is open to members only.

SCCPL & JKM Roundtable: Freedom to Read vs. Freedom from Disinformation
Wednesday, September 14, 2022
4:00 pm PT / 7:00 pm ET

Like most librarians, we at the Association of Jewish Libraries are concerned
about the increase in book banning and the suppression of marginalized voices.
At the same time, AJL members were disturbed to hear the defense of Holocaust
denial books made at ALA’s 2022 annual conference during a session about the
Unite Against Book Bans campaign. This panel will explore the tensions between
defending the freedom to read and guarding against harmful disinformation.

Our guests are Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Director of ALA’s Office for
Intellectual Freedom, and Michael Berenbaum, Professor at American Jewish
University specializing in the study of the Holocaust.

This session is cosponsored by AJL’s SSCPL Division and Jewish Kidlit Mavens,
and is open only to AJL members and members of Jewish Kidlit Mavens.

AJL Canada Roundtable: Finding and Reading the Personal Narratives of
Yiddish-speaking Migrants to Canada, 1900-1930
Wednesday, May 18, 2022
10:30 am PT/ 1:30 pm ET/ 8:30 pm Israel Time

In this presentation, doctoral candidate Vardit Lightstone will address the
creative ways that migrants to Canada from 1900 to 1930 forged a new hybrid
culture and identity, and how they express that in their life stories.

When Eastern European Jews migrated to Canada, they created a Canadian Eastern
European Jewish culture and identity; by doing so, they expanded the
international Yiddish map and Yiddish culture. Vardit has uncovered previously
unknown memoirs and personal narratives by these migrants and will discuss how
they tell the stories of their own lives, connecting their early lives and
experiences in Eastern Europe to their lives and experiences in Canada.

Vardit Lightstone is a doctoral candidate in a Joint Education Placement
Program between the University of Toronto and the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem. Her research focuses on the life stories of Yiddish-speaking
immigrants to Canada from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In
her research she interrogates both the folk literary genre of life stories and
the ways migrants use folklore as they adapt to their new situations.

Time: 6:00–7:30pm ET
AJL members $75/nonmembers $150
Instructor: Kathy Bloomfield

Does your library have a mission statement? Or a strategic plan?
Do you know how to prepare a budget for the library?
Do you know how to attract and keep volunteers? Or “fire” a volunteer?
What is your leadership style?

This highly interactive class will delve into these topics and more to teach
the management skills needed to understand the “business” of running your
library. There will be discussions and homework. An assignment due at the end
of Session 3 will demonstrate that you know how to ensure that your library is
a priority in your institution.

Instructor Kathy Bloomfield is the president of the Association of Jewish
Libraries. Though currently “retired,” she uses her time for a variety of
activities such as book editing, book reviewing, and managing her personal
library of over two thousand books. With over forty-five years of experience in
for-profit, nonprofit, and entrepreneurial business, volunteer roles including
synagogue president, and innumerable committee work, she is ideally suited to
use her expertise to assist others in finding their managerial talents. Kathy
lives in Seal Beach, California.
