[Histonet] gram stain/label issues
HI all, We are doing gram stains manually, and the acetone is removing some of the 'ink' from the printed labels making them difficult to read--let alone scan the barcode. Does anyone have any suggestions/hints on what they are using for their gram stain that may lessen the acetone removal of the print on the labels? Is there a system that will not affect the slide labels? Is there a gram stain that anyone could recommend that does not use acetone? [Histonet] embedding beads/tissue marking dyes
Hi We may be encountering some issues with our tissue marking dyes 'clogging' up our processors. Ive heard of a system where a coloured 'bead' is embedded right beside the tissue, and subsequently cut onto the slide. This does not mark the margins obviously, but is used as a method to track like specimens that are grossed, embedded and subsequently cut in a row. (red, orange, green, blue.) I explored the archives for embedding beads, but only found reference to a glass bead that is placed in the wax inside the block, but not subsequently cut. PS: we are still troubleshooting our dyes (dilutions, brand, etc.), but if anyone has a brand of dye that they like and have no issues with, I'd be thrilled to get the information as well! [Histonet] dictation systems
Hi all! Anyone out there have any recommendations for dictation systems? I have the rare and exciting opportunity to help plan a new lab within a new hospital and we'd like to consider a new dictation system. We'd need something that would work for grossing, autopsy, pathologists and (possibly remote) access for transcriptionists. We'd prefer a hands free system for grossing and autopsy at least. We're leaning away from voice recognition for various reasons. We're open to telephone systems or computer systems. Any suggestions? VENDORS WELCOME! [Histonet] Formula 83-Thank you!
Thank you all for taking time to respond to my inquiry about Formula 83. We received a free sample and will perform some trials and I will post our results on the Histonet asap. [Histonet] Formula 83 users?
HI all. I have searched the Histonet archives and found a lot of very positive reviews regarding Formula 83. I am wondering if anyone has encountered any issues with using Formula 83 on a stainer and then xylene on a tape coverslipper. Are there any miscibility issues? Are you soaking in xylene prior to tape coverslipping required? Any helpful hints/tips/tricks? Thank you in advance. RE: [Histonet] (no subject)
We file all our blank slides with the stained slides. That way we can always go back to them rather than cutting any more on an already minute piece of tissue remaining. Also, for legal reasons, what if the blanks that are discarded contained tumor? (or NO tumor) IE: Showing something other than what the original stained slides showed. Is there a general standard in practice out there for FNBs? Unfortunately, with the economy the way it is; and trying always to find ways to bring down expenses this seems counteractive. [Histonet] RE: Flame substitute for embedding
We also used to have an open flame while embedding! Now, we simply have a policy in place where after EACH cassette is embedded, the Techs MUST thoroughly wipe their forceps with disposable Kleenex (and then dispose of it!). Also, we use toothless forceps as much as possible to reduce the possibility of cross contamination. [Histonet] formailin dispensing (large volumes)
Hi Histonetters, Can anyone share anything about their formalin preparation and dispensing? We are fortunate enough to be planning for a new morgue. In our existing morgue, we manually make 200L of formalin (from concentrate). It is made in a large tank and then pumped up into the upper tank by a pump that was made by our maintenance dept. (Our morgue staff wear a respirator while making the formalin.) This upper tank, has a gravity fed tap for dispensing. Then, another full tank is made for the bottom tank. Of course, we always have fear of tanks being over-filled or leaking, so we'd like to explore a new system that would be easier, safer and more reliable. We have looked into the formalin dispensing units out there, but the capacity is not large enough for our needs. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Vendors welcome to reply. [Histonet] RE: Re: As Thanksgiving Approaches
We do release specimens to patients (with photo id required) , but we have forms that they must read and sign (releasing us of any potential issues). On the form, we explain the hazards and how to store human tissue, glass slides, paraffin blocks, etc. We rinse all the fresh specimens to remove as much formalin as possible. We keep a copy attached to the report and send a copy with the pt / family member.
