I just wanted to give a notice to anyone looking for a histology job in the
Tampa Bay area, with a four year degree, there will be several jobs available
in the near future at the Tampa VA and will be listed on the USA Jobs website.
Unfortunately, these postings have very short windows and when they close, they
do not open again for 90 days.

If I know of an applicant interested in a position, I can send an email when
the window opens for accepting applications.

Even if someone is not interested in a job presently, I would still encourage
them to inquire; some openings will not be available until months from now.

[Histonet] job search in Chicago area

2019-09-25 Thread Margaryan, Naira via Histonet
Hello histonetters,

Please share this email with your colleagues.
I am in a job searching process in Chicago area to be close to my family as my
appointment in West Virginia University Research Corporation, Morgantown, WV is
coming to an end since my long-standing supervisor is closing her research
laboratory.

I have had the privilege of establishing a Research Histology Core in Stanley
Manne Children's Research Institute, Chicago, IL as well as a Research
Histology Service in West Virginia University Research Corporation, Morgantown,
WV, where I have provided histology services to scientists in various
disciplines to support their research projects. I have also trained students
enrolled in health science programs in the areas of routine histology and
animal work.

My experience in cancer research with background in histology and in veterinary
medicine has given me a unique opportunity to translate my knowledge from basic
science to clinically relevant applications for diagnostic, prognostic and
therapeutic development as they relate to cancer. My contributions to various
research projects have included in vitro and in vivo work of predictive cancer
biomarkers. I have been involved in testing novel humanized targeted
antibody-based therapy in the treatment of human cancer in xenograft mouse
models.

I am confident that my skills and experience would allow me to be a great fit
for the research laboratory where I could provide excellent support for a wide
range of scientific projects. I am a fast learner, a hard worker and a strong
team player.
Furthermore, I am able to transfer a DAKO autostainer and an H station as
part of my relocation.

My Resume and Curriculum Vitae are available by request and provide the more
comprehensive list of my qualifications and accomplishments. I am very
interested in meeting to discuss how I can best contribute to the work in
research laboratory.

Sincerely,
Naira Margaryan

Hi Allan,

With the quality of the eosin dyes today, filtering should not be required. The
same for xylene and ethanols.

You will need to monitor the usage and solution levels (evaporation being the
issue here).

There are no hard and fast rules but a suggestion is one slide per ml of
solution. Therefore a bath of 400ml of haematoxylin should stain 400 slides
consistently before a noticeable deterioration in staining is noted. The same
with the other solutions.

Yep, filtering the hematoxlyn fixed it. Thanks for the tip.

Is it worthwhile to filter the eosin, alcohols, and xylene substitutes as well?

Hello all,

Does someone know what would cause dirty flakes of light purple that showed
across the whole slide?

http://i.imgur.com/1nIXwAy.jpg

Reagents are relatively fresh but the H stainer hadn't been used for a week
over the holiday break.
Is it surface film on the hematoxylin? I didn't notice anything in the
container. We are using Mayer's, followed by differentiation with HCl acid
alcohol, with 2-3 minute long wash steps in between.

Thanks,
Allan

[Histonet] Job openings and no candidates

2015-05-15 Thread Teri Johnson
Happy Friday!

Ideally when there is a job opening we can attract a well-trained certified HT
or HTL and life is good. But that doesn't happen often, and actually was the
exact reason I got a chance to train OTJ back in the early 80s. So, very little
has changed indeed.

In response to the recent emails lamenting the lack of qualified candidates for
current open positions, I think we need to be a bit more creative in how we
recruit people. We already know that nobody knows we exist, and even though
there some schools in the US specifically devoted to histology training, we
don't seem to be making headway.

There is a group of individuals already out there that we may be able to tap
into. Both already have associate degrees and technical laboratory background.
Veterinary Medical Technicans and Medical Laboratory Technicians may be ripe
for the plucking. Career advancement and professional development would be a
great carrot for them I think without the need to get a bachelor's degree
unless they wanted to. The background is at least a little more in line with
the overseas Laboratory Scientist positions, and anyone who is a VMT, MLT, or
MT and also a histology professional can tell you the extra knowledge comes in
handy in real life.

So, why not also find schools that have these programs and throw job openings
up on their bulletin board? We may not get many nibbles, but some is better
than none.

I have been following this and would like to ask a few questions.

I am part of a community college electron microscope training program. We teach
the fundamentals of both biological and materials EM, both SEM and TEM.

Our biological students learn plastic sectioning for LM and EM. They do not
learn much paraffin technique, but the ones I have shown have caught on quickly.

They have all been exposed to fixation, dehydration, and embedding in plastic.
They all know how to work safely in a lab.

Most finish with an associates degree in general science, so they all have
basic chemistry, biology, etc. They do not have anything like a real histology
course.

While our materials students seem to find jobs, especially in nearby computer
firms like Intel, IBM, Western Digital etc., our bio students have a harder
time.

Some have asked about histology, I show them the ASCP rules and they get
discouraged, thinking they will never find a place to get in that year of OJT.

There are few NACCLS programs in our area, and some of the course work in such
a program would be redundant for our students.

What is the likelihood that some of my students would qualify for OJT in a
histology lab, and how can I alert them to the possibilities?

Hi Jon,

I just wanted to mention the possibility of your students finding jobs in
research labs. Many research labs at universities utilize techs in histology
that are not certified and, as long as they're in the US or Canada, that
experience does meet ASCP requirements to sit for the exam. I've worked in
research labs for the last 3 years and took my HTL exam last spring. This is
great because the techs can still be paid as full-time employees (though less
than a certified tech) with benefits while working towards their certification.
I'd be happy to talk more with you about this if you have questions or think it
might be helpful!

[Histonet] Job availability

2014-08-27 Thread Nalesnik, Michael
Hello Histonetters!

I have subscribed to this message board for awhile and would first like to
thank you for all of the helpful suggestions I have picked up just by reading
the posts.
I am writing because we have an opening for a Histology Supervisor in our
laboratory. This is at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is a large and busy lab that services several
hospitals in our system. Our hospital was ranked #12 nationally and #1 in
Pennsylvania for 2014-5 by US News and World Report. We have recently undergone
CAP inspection with no deficiencies cited and are seeking to strengthen our lab
by staying current (or ahead of the curve) while keeping 40 or so pathologists
happy at the same time. Given the size of the lab we have a laboratory manager
who is currently doing yeoman's work in performing the work of both positions
for now.
We are looking for a knowledgeable person who is independent and can work with
and manage people. We also need a person who is open to innovations that may
arise as a result of the forces that are impacting the way that pathology is
practiced. I think this would be a challenging and satisfying position for the
right person.
Pittsburgh has frequently been named as one of the best cities to live in the
US, most recently by the Economist (excluding Honolulu!) and as a transplant
from New Jersey who has lived here since 1977, I can vouch for the fact that it
is a very enjoyable place to live regardless of whether you are young or old.
If you think this might interest you, or if you would like more information,
feel free to contact either me or our lab manager Rachel Wall (wal...@upmc.edu)
who is more familiar with the specifics of the day-to-day operations of the lab.
Look forward to hearing from you, and thanks!

[Histonet] Job Opening

2014-08-21 Thread Howery, Jeff L
Hi my name is Jeff and I am the Pathology Supervisor here at Kadlec Regional
Medical Center Richland, WA. I just had a Histologist resign today as she is
moving to Florida to be closer to her Parents. I am looking for someone to fill
this position that has Immuno experience and I would prefer someone ASCP/QIHC.
This posting will not take place on our web site till next week sometime.
Kadlec is a 270 bed facility with an expansion taking place next year to over
300 beds. Last year we did almost 13,000 cases and growing every year. Richland
is Part of the Tri-Cities Pasco, Kennewick, and Richland with the area
population of about 250,000 both cities and rural area. The Columbia, Snake,
and Yakima Rivers converge here so there are boating and fishing opportunities.
We are 2 hours from Spokane and 3 ½ hours from Seattle with snow skiing along
the Cascade mountain range and in Spokane. Let me know if you have any question.
