Yea sorry for posting here. I just never waited so long for anything, and
its driving me nuts!
It's also going to be a very long wait for server modders who want to mod
the game already. Metamod:S is probably going to need an entirely new
binary to get it working for HL2 and TF2. Compatibilty nightmare.

[hlcoders] AI in multiplayer..

2007-09-18 Thread Adam Donovan
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
AI in multiplayer..

Hi all,

I’m almost certain that this has been covered before and that others
have solved it, but I’m having troubles getting it to work.

I got the AI (combine soldier) to the point that they follow me, will
elbow me out of the way and even throw a grenade…but they do not shoot
me with the smg1. I have done what the tutorials have said todo and
still nothing…There is one exception to this, if the player I’m
controlling goes behind an obstacle such as a plank of wood, crate,
(the wooden breakable staircase in lost coast) then the soldiers do
fire at me and do give me damage. In the console I can see that when
they are shooting I get a developer message telling me that the handle
animations event has happened…but when I come out from behind the
obstacle then they stop shooting me…
Also I get errors such as

**ERROR: Combat State with no enemy! Slamming to ALERT
  and im using ep1 models
  If
anyone has got this working so far then would they mind sharing their
mp smg1 weapon code or perhaps have a look at the code I have written
to see if you can see where I went wrong?
  Adam Donovan

please find my code here

I remember being told it was just the flashlight that cast the dynamic
shadows but you'll have to wait till someone from Valve confirms this.

Hi All-

Once I do the big merge I will be able to provide a better preview of
changes that you will be getting with the next SDK update. But for now
here is the high-level list of new features and improvements in Orange
Box games and the latest version of the Source Engine:

Non-photo-realistic Rendering
Cinematic Physics Simulations
Utilization of Multi-core Processors
Improved HDR
Enhanced Particle System
Human Skin Shader Improvements
Enhanced Foliage Rendering
New Motion Blur Effect
Pixel Shader Model 3.0
Enhanced Shadows

Hopefully some of this stuff looks interesting to some of you. :)

There hasn't been much talk about what updates we'll be receiving to the
SDK
for Episode 2. I was hoping you guys at Valve would enlighten us a bit
on
what to expect. The only things I've heard are from the Ep 2 video that
was
shown, regarding the new technologies put in, like the cinematic
physics,
enhanced foliage rendering and better expansive outdoor rendering.

It'd be great to have a heads up on what we'll be receiving. It's not
very
fun to just throw us these new updates, and have us figure out whats
new.
Updates I'm hoping for is some enhancement with the Physics system to
allow
for better network predicting. Shaders to allow multiple passes, or
dynamically change a shader for one model without having to switch skins
of
the models, and an increase on the limit of 64 instructions for the .fxc
shaders.

I've also been trying to implement my own physics, however its a bit
hard to
do with the standard line and ray traces we have. I know we won't be
receiving SOLID_OBB or anything of that sorts, but this engine is
suppose to
be top of the line, and it is still using only AABB.

I'm sure there is more things others have been hoping for, shedding some
light on us would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

[hlcoders] TF2 Plugin Headstart? VEngineCvar004?

2007-09-18 Thread Mattie Casper
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
Just doing some quick research and it almost looks like we could make some
semblance of a working server plugin for TF2 if we had access to the
definition of VEngineCvar004.

Can we get a copy of this, even if it's not official/beta, just for
prototyping purposes? Something along the lines of what was posted last year
for
ISERVERPLUGINCALLBACKS002http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Querying_ConVars_from_Server_Pluginswould
be great, but even something less formal would help immensely.

Thanks in advance, and congratulations on getting the TF2 beta out the door.
Just about everyone I've talked to has agreed that it's impressive.

Re: [hlcoders] TF2 Plugin Headstart? VEngineCvar004?

2007-09-18 Thread David Anderson

There seems to be more changes than just that; here's my cursory
analysis from a whole ten minutes of looking:

 a) IServerGameDLL005 is not the same as IServerGameDLL005 from the
original engine (the last four functions or so are new). I didn't check
the other game-provided interfaces.

 b) vstdlib.dll no longer exports a whole slew of functions. It looks
like the intention was, a long time ago, to deprecate it and move
exports to vstdlib_s.dll. However the current SDK defines the imports
against vstdlib.dll, so we'll need a new import library [?] or some sort
of clarification.

 c) It looks like mods are getting compiled with GCC4/MSVC8 now, which
is great news, but a forewarning to people who grab binary signatures:
MSVC8 has a tendency to optimize internal function calls down to a
non-standard calling convention.

Valve said they'd provide the changes once the fires are put out or
something, so those are just musings while we wait semi-patiently.

[hlcoders] CSS Player models in a HL2MP Based mod.

2007-09-18 Thread Tom Leighton

Hey,

I am trying to get CSS player models into my mod, but am having some
trouble understanding the difference between the scratch sdk (Where it
works), and HL2MP (Where it doesn't).

Is there a simple way to enable the usage of these (For example,
something to do with the weapon activity tables), or is it more to do
with player class / anim code?

Cheers

Re: [hlcoders] TF2 Plugin Headstart? VEngineCvar004?

2007-09-18 Thread Mattie Casper
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
Just to compare notes: I had the same findings this afternoon for (a) and
(b), though I didn't check out the differences in IServerGameDLL005. As for
(b), that vstdlib to vstdlib_s relocation is problematic to manage for
existing plugins. It's all a bit of a mess with so many things relocated.
From what I can ascertain, any substantial plugin would probably have to
wait for the SDK release or maybe a secondary/temporary/bridge library to
cover for the missing pieces. I hope a clarification on the
deprecation/relocation will come with the SDK update.

In an effort to even get a barebones VSP loaded into the TF2 server, I cut a
dependency on the GetCVarIF() usage in convar.cpp (one of those
relocated/removed exports). After that's done, an empty plugin can load and
get the majority of callbacks/interfaces from the server. Unfortunately,
though, since the VEngineCvar004 interface is used by TF2, the plugin can't
register console commands or variables. I wanted to request that interface
because with it, it should be possible to make a a simplistic (possibly
CRT-dependent) plugin as a proof-of-concept on TF2. As it stands, all I was
able to prototype this afternoon was a poor cousin of a real plugin.

Surely there are many more landmines hidden. If others uncover them, please
share. A lot of us are really excited about TF2 and would like to get
integrated.

Again, Valve reps, if you get a breather, please provide the VEngineCvar004
interface definition to tide us over until the SDK update. It might not be
anywhere near the whole story, but I think it could be worth the time to
copy-and-paste it.

Thanks,
-Mattie

Just doing some quick research and it almost looks like we could make
 some
semblance of a working server plugin for TF2 if we had access to the
  definition of VEngineCvar004.

Can we get a copy of this, even if it's not official/beta, just for
prototyping purposes? Something along the lines of what was posted last
 year
  for
  ISERVERPLUGINCALLBACKS002http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Querying_ConVars_from_Server_Plugins
 would
be great, but even something less formal would help immensely.

Thanks in advance, and congratulations on getting the TF2 beta out the
 door.
Just about everyone I've talked to has agreed that it's impressive.

If someone else has had better luck figuring out VEngineCvar004, please
  don't hesitate to share. ;)

 AI in multiplayer..

 Hi all,

I’m almost certain that this has been covered before
 and that others
have solved it, but I’m having troubles getting it
 to work.

I got the AI (combine soldier) to the point that
 they follow me, will
elbow me out of the way and even throw a grenade…but
 they do not shoot
me with the smg1. I have done what the tutorials
 have said todo and
still nothing…There is one exception to this, if the
 player I’m
controlling goes behind an obstacle such as a plank
 of wood, crate,
(the wooden breakable staircase in lost coast) then
 the soldiers do
fire at me and do give me damage. In the console I
 can see that when
they are shooting I get a developer message telling
 me that the handle
animations event has happened…but when I come out
 from behind the
obstacle then they stop shooting me…
Also I get errors such as

**ERROR: Combat State with no enemy!
 Slamming to ALERT
   and im using ep1 models
   If
anyone has got this working so far then would they
 mind sharing their
mp smg1 weapon code or perhaps have a look at the
 code I have written
to see if you can see where I went wrong?
