Hey, y'all, I just thought I'd let you all know that I've reached a
point right now where I've let gaming and everything related (including
especially adminning of servers) pretty much take over my life, in
almost every aspect--replacing not only more typical social interaction
but even so far as a job, etc. It's kind of stupid, but it's easy to do
because it's fun, often challenging, and because there's really a
*community* you're a part of. Regardless, almost like an alcoholic I've
reached "rock bottom", and I'm taking this opportunity, somewhat
involuntarily, to step away from the gaming community altogether.
Now's just the time I have to make that step.

I know I've relied on a lot of y'all--including some of you Valve
employees--for answers and help on a lot of different subjects, and for
that I thank you. I also know I've gotten pretty harsh/sharp with a lot
of you, and for that I'm sorry. I really don't mean to be an asshole,
but I let it come out like that way too much, often with very little
"filtering" going on before I hit the Send button. Yeah, sometimes it
was deserved, but most often it wasn't, and regardless it was wrong.

I'll be unsubscribing from these lists as soon as I can get listadmin to

Yeah,
I have a spray of the USMC logo that is black and gold. It works fine in the new
patch. What happens when you spray? What does it spray? Does it spray the
correct image just not in color?

Ah yes but, even prior to 1108... I think what came from 1107 or 1106,
the spy disguised as a scout walked around holding the rocket launcher
but, they never could fire it it just looked like a scout carrying one
on their shoulders

RE: New Beta Counter-Strike Server and HLTV

2001-09-28 Thread Eric Smith

The installer checks to see if you have Counter-Strike installed and won't
install the mp.dll file if you don't.

For example: If you point to your Half-Life folder, the installer will
check in Half-Life/cstrike, which is where Counter-Strike (mod) would be
installed. If Counter-Strike is installed, a new cstrike/dlls/mp.dll file
will be installed. Otherwise, the installer will skip installing the mp.dll
file and will only install the new HLTV files.

We'll keep the .zip file suggestion in mind for future releases like this.

Well, I tried that (it's how I've handled some in the past), but while it
did
spit out the hltv-related files, the new mp.dll was nowhere to be found (I
guess
it wasn't willing to create a new cstrike folder in the root for it). I'll
probably try to have another admin email it to me or DCC via IRC, etc...

RE: cs 1.3 retail dedicated server keeps quitting

2001-09-28 Thread Ryan McCullough

Cmon guys this is an easy one. He downloaded the full HLServer. I hope you
didnt delete it dude. If so you need to download it again. What you do is
install your hlserver4108.exe, then download csv13full.exe(counter strike
mod version full install) and install it into your hlserver directory.

For some reason all these guys don't know you need the server and the mod to
run cstrike dedicated server. Te cstrike files are not included with the
hlserver installation. It is a seperate download.

The past week several people have said that the retail cs and hl client
installs can run servers just fine using the hlds.exe that's included
with them as there is no difference to hlserver. I've seen a good
amount of problems with this and every single person who has switched
over to the standalone dedicated server has remedied them. So there
must be something different.

Those were it. Best way to serve CS, and you have CS retail, download
HLDS, and the CD mod. Install to seperate directory than your Retail
install, if you play from that same machine.

Hi

I fun the full HLserver4108 dedicated server. Then I try to
join using a CS 1.3 retail and the there is an error which
says

"your .dll [cl_dlls]client.dll] differs from the server's"

So HLserver4108 and CS 1.3 retail is not compatible??
What patch to add to make them compatible?
Thanks.

LOL, looking for another temporary colo like your prior one? Because,
that's exactly what you'll get with an unlimited GB/month colo. Just ride
them out until their funds dry up=\

The better ones in NYC that I've heard of have a 600 GB/month limit. Which
is pretty huge compared to many other shops. I really don't know how long
they can support that policy as well.

Anyway, good luck! If you do find something, please share it with the list.

Also if we get a zip we can extract it to a tmp directory and rename the old
files mp.dll.old before we copy in the new. Makes it much easier to manage
the change and to create a state to go back to if the worst happened.

Just an additional note: I'm not really suggesting a separate ZIP for the
big
patches (4107->4108, for instance), but these little add-on patches are much
easier to handle as ZIPs :)

I had
problems one time with the order of the command line switches. Try removing the
+port and see if it works. Then add it back at the end. It should be able
to connect to WON, auth, and all that stuff without specifying the port. Your
clients won't be able to connect though. It shouldn't be a problem though
haveing an argument with a '-' as the first one. Point is though, does it work
normally, i mean without firedaemon? Try starting your server normally, if it
doesn't work that way your problem is not in firedaemon or the
service.

how
about sending a screen of the console or something? What exactly does your
server do? Did you check the box to interact with the desktop? Make sure you
read the whole firedaemon documentation relating to hl servers. What
happens  when you tell the process to restart? I think I need more
information to diagnose your problem.

I too still have the voice comm enabled. Quite frankly, I'm getting

It's a
good thought, and not just because you might be "lazy".  There are many
times when for whatever reason you can't get to the files themselves at the
moment.  The only problem I have with that is that I'm not really sure I
want anyone with the rcon pass to be able to be writing values to the
server.cfg.  I guess the current situation is more secure and good enough
:)

RE: 4.1.0.8 Server crash - I give.

2001-09-28 Thread Eric Hall

Well, I guess YMMV. I'm running CS servers mainly besides a 32-player dod_caen
server, and they're staying up for quite a while, enough to get userids up into
like 4 and 5 thousand (rcon kick # 5281).

Speaking of which, a quick suggestion/request to Valve: would it be possible to
put an extra space between the UserID and WONID columns for the "stat" command?
When the userid gets into 4 digits, it runs right into the WONID. It's not a
*huge* deal, since you can usually figure out where the userid stops and the
WONID starts, but it *is* an annoyance/hindrance that seems like it could be
easily remedied. Thanks :)

And back to the problem at hand: how long are they staying up? If it's for 5
minutes, well, I can see why that'd be a problem. But if it's 5 hours, what's
the worst that can happen? Automatically restarting by ServerDoc or Firedaemon?

2001-09-28 Thread Eric Hall

http://www.hlsw.net

It's what I use when I'm not in-game and need to interact with the server. I've
been running my servers as services, either with Firedaemon or HLBP for a long
time, and I'm used to not having the console to work with. In fact, I like it
better that way. The HLDS console is pretty clumsy, but HLSW is a *great*
little tool that does a whole lot in a small package. Very cool :)

I have a question for you guys with these crashing servers: Do you allow
spectators?

Mine was crashing with this. As soon as I disabled it, my server has been
running pretty stable. Albeit, I don't run AdminMOD at all. Just ClanMOD
and NeoTF on my TFC Server.

This is the same thing I complained about last week. I have since

Only the counter-strike .so and .dll we're changed so it's not going to
do squat for you unless your serving CS. Though, the HLTV proxy got an
update at the same time, you could use that.

I know this may not help you..

I have been running the new 4.1.0.8 with no problems
on a Win2k Professional Workstation.

I had to completely uninstall 4.1.0.7 and then install
the full 4.1.0.8 in order for things to work correctly
for me. When you uninstall 4.1.0.7, it still leaves
some files that you have to manually delete before you
install 4.1.0.8. After I did this everything has
worked great for me.

RE: cs 1.3 retail dedicated server keeps quitting

2001-09-28 Thread Lythium

The past week several people have said that the retail cs and hl client
installs can run servers just fine using the hlds.exe that's included
with them as there is no difference to hlserver. I've seen a good
amount of problems with this and every single person who has switched
over to the standalone dedicated server has remedied them. So there
must be something different.

Those were it. Best way to serve CS, and you have CS retail, download
HLDS, and the CD mod. Install to seperate directory than your Retail
install, if you play from that same machine.

Re: cs 1.3 retail dedicated server keeps quitting

2001-09-28 Thread HL Server

If you play the game, best thing to do is run the HLDS that came with the
client ...

If you don't play the game, then download the dedicated server ...

Reason being, if you play the game, and set up the downloadable dedicated
server, at patch time, you will have to download patches for all the
different versions ... If you play the game, you simply have to download
the client patches, and also apply them to the machine you're running as
your server ... The client and server will be exactly the same, but the
server you will implement to serve, and the client you will implement to
play ...

I have been doing it this way for years ... originally I ran a HalfLife
server ... (the original game) and switched to CS sometime in April of this
year ...

If you want to run the dedicated 4108 server, you only need download the
full 1108 CS mod ...

Re: Server Stalls - why?

2001-09-28 Thread Wholesale Computers

I am running Win2Kpro and PCAW32 Ver 10.
24 Public servers all apparently running quite smooth since the update.
(knock on wood).. No BW issues.
I have also set sv_voiceenable 0 and made this a mandatory setting for all
my servers. So far so good.
Install Process... Wipes Existing HL directory clean except for the add on
MOD Folders. Did full version 4108 DS install. I then used the Full
Version 1.3 CS update knowing it doesn't overwrite pre existing configs,
with the exception of having to redo AdminMod for those server that were
running. Now all servers are and have been running up to speed including
the ones using AdminMod.

Writing to the server.cfg file while in console

(Sorry for the broken English in the last one, I need to proof read...)

Can this be done in any way like the banip then write command ?
Say you wanted to hard code a CVAR to your server.cfg on the fly cause
you're just that lazy and don't wish to manually edit the file in its
corresponding directory. Can it be done ? and if not, then there's a future
suggestion...

Much like the "set" functionality of newer quake engines.

you can rcon sv_gravity 399, but it will still default back to 400 at round
changes, OR, you can rcon set sv_gravity 399, and now the default becomes
399

This functionality would rock in my opinion.

I'm running TFC and I do NOT have AdminMod or PB installed. I did a full

This does not bode well.

Running as an app, not a service. Won't stay up more than a few hours.
Never had this prob before patch.

Details don't matter, the only thing thats changed is the CS 4.1.0.8 and
MetaMod patches.

What gives with the reduced availibility?

Subject: 4.1.0.8 Server crash - I give.

Ok gang, I am out of ideas. I simply can NOT keep 4.1.0.8 running. There
is nothing special about my set up here either:

AMD Athlon 850
512M RAM
Windows 2000 Server Edition
2.5M/1M ADSL
Send logs to hlstats on same machine, different IP

2 HLDS installations, both totally from scratch, no AdminMod nor any other
special set up. Maps are all as released by Valve with exception of
Murderball. Crashes occur only after players have been in the server for a
bit and there are no log entries of use (the logs end at some time prior to
the last few entries that would hold the crash, ostensibly due to caching
I'd imagine).

I uninstalled my previous installations and installed the whole shooting
match from scratch. Copied maps and WAD files (only 3rd party WADs, none of
the Valve ones of course), and added config files. There are no 3rd party
add-ons running (AdminMod, PB, etc.) and nothing special about these
installations.

At this point, I'm about ready to bag it up and kick it out the door. When
I was running the previous version the system was running stable as an ox --
no problems at all. The new version seemed ok at first but started doing
this very quickly. I am completely out of ideas on what to look for so I
thought I'd make one last ditch effort and see if anyone here has any ideas.
Thoughts?

2001-09-28 Thread HL Server

Mine does the EXACT same thing WITH AdminMod and PunkBuster ... same
scenario .. previous version would run for weeks ... New version .. I'm
lucky if it lasts a day ... I'm running HLDS.EXE that came with client ...
Appears only DLLs changed anyway

Re: Windows 2000 Services?

2001-09-28 Thread Don Norton

How do you interact with the server as far as an admin roll is concerned? I
know the documentation says to have the service set to "interact with the
desktop" but I tried that proggy on my win2k server with hlds and it runs
and I can join the server but no interactive console is up? any clues?

Hlserver4108 not compable with Cs1.3 retail

2001-09-28 Thread Nick Nanotte

Thanks.

Re: Server Stalls - why?

2001-09-28 Thread EchoBar

Yes I have a server or two running pc-anywhere with HLDS.
There ports don't conflict (PC-Anywhere where uses 5631 & 5632) so it has
never caused a problem.
what is the start line you are using for HLDS.
