That may be. I think anything below 100 is a great ping. I usually am
at 30-60 ping.

You know what is really funny, the guy with 20 ping bitching and moaning
when he reaches a 30 ping. It seems WAY too many players are putting too
much stock in a few numbers. 95% of the time it is all in their heads.

Not to shake the boat too much, as I know most of the list readers would
rather blaze than actually help anyone, but shouldn't valve create a
separate mailing list for Source?

Plenty of us have been unnecessarily confused by bogus advise from
*experts* who were actually talking about one system or the other.

Alfred, can valve create [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It is hard enough to find pure hlds information on the valve website; no
so with Source. Of course, I understand the company wants to move
forward and supporting the past is a painful endeavor. Still, this
would go along way.

Re: [hlds] CS:S Server Hangs on World triggered "Round_Start"

2006-05-03 Thread Nashalife | Newbie

It does... Fresh copy, no mani, no bots, etc... But still, when running 3-4
busy servers on single Windows box, one of them will eventually hang...
Problem is that it's really hard to reproduce, as stated by original poster,
they may run well for a week or hang every one or two hours...

May be it really has something to do with simultaneous Round Start events as
pointed by Stuart... Need to test it a bit...

Do you run any cmdline parameters other than -tickrate, +maxplayers,
etc?
Are you running bots at all? If so, have you tried disabling bots?
Have you tried removing all files relating to Mani-admin (including
config dirs, etc) and trying again?
Have you tried running HLDSUpdateTool and creating a fresh default SRCDS
file structure?

I suggest creating a brand new copy of the source content from scratch,
using the HLDSUpdateTool, and see if that exhibits the same problems.

Here is the problem which is haunting me for last few months (starting
January I think).
I've got six pretty busy CS:S public servers, Windows 2003, 16 slots,
mostly standard maps, tickrate 66, Mani Admin Plugin, StatsMe Minimum.
Occasionally one of them hangs consuming as much CPU as it can grab.
Can't see any pattern - servers may work for few days without this
problem and then may start dying every hour or two. The only common sign
is that last line in the console always says World triggered
"Round_Start"
I verified installation with hldsupdatetool, tried to disable StatsMe
and Mani - still no luck. Any suggestions?

Hi, do hi pinging players lag a cs 1.6 server. It would make sense to
me. This is what i heard: Laggers DO Lag the Server: Because of the way
hlds deals with lag compensation, players that are lagging on the server
actually really do lag the entire server. This is because if the server
has to wait for data from all players on the server before it can
calculate each frame. So if everyone on the server has under 50 ping
except 1 person with 200 ping, the server has to wait an extra 150 ms
per frame it calculates. This is why I highly reccomend a high ping
kicker set to kick anybody with over 100 ping.

Thanks

HL got it because HL started out as mostly Q1 code, IIRC, with just a few
lines of Q2 code. Back in the good old days.

At one point in time they would cause the whole server to lag, but this
has been fixed (I'm not sure what version fixed it.) Quake1 still
suffers from it, but Quake2 did not. So I am not sure how HL got the
bug in the first place.

mostly standard maps, tickrate 66, Mani Admin Plugin, StatsMe Minimum.

Re: [hlds] High Ping Players Lag Server?

2006-05-03 Thread Stuart Stegall

At one point in time they would cause the whole server to lag, but this
has been fixed (I'm not sure what version fixed it.) Quake1 still
suffers from it, but Quake2 did not. So I am not sure how HL got the
bug in the first place.

Hi, do hi pinging players lag a cs 1.6 server. It would make sense to me.
This is what i heard:
Laggers DO Lag the Server:
Because of the way hlds deals with lag compensation, players that are
lagging on the server actually really do lag the entire server. This is
because if the server has to wait for data from all players on the server
before it can calculate each frame. So if everyone on the server has under
50 ping except 1 person with 200 ping, the server has to wait an extra 150
ms per frame it calculates. This is why I highly reccomend a high ping
kicker set to kick anybody with over 100 ping.

I play on dial-up all the time, no lag caused by me being there. Someone is
feeding you a line. Now I will say that people who have serious lag do cause
issues. They hop all over and are almost impossible to hit but that is
someone with a +500 ping. I get around 2-300 and when I am lucky it is in
the 100's.

RE: [hlds] OT: Maps for HL1DM:SOURCE

2006-05-03 Thread Doug Crabtree
We (I) am asking about HL1DM:Source. Not the HL1:source that has been out
for a while. The DM:Source is supposed to be HL1DM redone in HL2DM Source
Engine. I've played it and it's pretty ugly compared to regular HL1. I
hope if they do plan on phasing out the older version that they get this one
fixed first.

If you pre-purchase EP1 it also includes (for immediate use) HL2DM and
HLDM:Source Multiplayer.

Only Clients with EP1 pre-purchased on the account can run HLDM:Source
multiplayer servers/clients right now from the Steam Games menu (what Alfred

Re: [hlds] CS:S Server Hangs on World triggered "Round_Start"

2006-05-03 Thread Stuart Stegall

I've had problems where if more than 2-3 servers round change at the
same time, one of them would hang. And oddly on my system it is NOT
related to disc throughput as I have a fully FC2Gbps channel going to
each server from the SAN.

Roman Hatsiev wrote:

I've got six pretty busy CS:S public servers, Windows 2003, 16 slots,
mostly standard maps, tickrate 66, Mani Admin Plugin, StatsMe Minimum.
Occasionally one of them hangs consuming as much CPU as it can grab.
Can't see any pattern - servers may work for few days without this
problem and then may start dying every hour or two. The only common
sign is that last line in the console always says World triggered
"Round_Start"
I verified installation with hldsupdatetool, tried to disable StatsMe
and Mani - still no luck. Any suggestions?

Re: [hlds] hldsupdatetool: how to install ds of hl1mp source ?

2006-05-03 Thread Nashalife | Newbie

It looks like hldsupdatetool is not updated yet... At least
"hldsupdatetool -command list" returns no value for HLS: DM...

** 'game' options for Source DS Install:

   "Counter-Strike Source"
   "dods"
   "hl2mp"

** 'game' options for HL1 DS Install:

   "cstrike"
   "czero"
   "dmc"
   "dod"
   "gearbox"
   "ricochet"
   "tfc"
   "valve"

** 'game' options for Third-Party game servers:

   "redorchestra"
   "sin"

Cheers,
Newbie

Re: [hlds] SRCDS will not run

The maximum sv_maxrate of 3 was told to me directly by Alfred that it is
currently hard coded into SRCDS, so that is where I get my authority on that
subject. Ask Alfred off list for confirmation if you want. Who knows, maybe
this value will change.

Interesting. There have been suggestions in the past that source
packets can reach 560 Bytes. If this is the case, then we can't reall
support over 60 packets per second without potential choke issues. I
cannot provide solid confirmation of this packet size however.

On a side note, I do remember the Valve Developer Site notes for SRCDS once
saying it could support up to 255 players or some fancilful number like
that, but this has now disappeared. Maybe there are others out there who can
testify to witnessing the same value for the supposed original online
multiplayer limit that was envisaged for SRCDS?

I remember that too, given the round start load currently present, I
am genuinely quite worried if the engine is hardcoded to 30KBps.

cl_updaterate has a hard limit of 100 (from memory), cl_cmdrate does not
seem to have a hard limit other than the clients fps, but due to the nature
of SRCDS client/server communications, all you end up doing is sending the
same amount of data after a certain point no matter how high the cl_cmdrate
is.

They both have a limit. Just go to console and type "cl_cmdrate" and
"cl_updaterate" it's all there similarly type "rate" and on a
server "sv_maxrate" notice the cl_*rate cvars have documented limits.

I have been at Valve to provide a SRCDS Netcode explanation on how things
should be setup in optimal circumstances, rather than the 20/30/56Kbitsps
with 33% packet loss explanation they currently have.

Me too. the best solution is to look at what we know about the packets
and to attempt to craft the highest bandwidth situations we can, to
find the theoretical limits. There are alot of caps and limiters in
source, these don't make life overly easy.

One of the things I'd almost like more, is just for the server to
advertise sv_maxrate, sv_minrate, sv_maxupdaterate, sv_minupdaterate,
sv_maxunlag, etc. so that we can use tools to actively rate remote
servers by settings.

BTW, its a wiki, create an account and fix it yourself :p
