Its not the servers that crash, its the clients, and only when they change
teams and its extremely intermitant.

But, if you have a 5v5 war, then odds are at half time, when both teams
change sides, it will happen to at least 1 of them, but its completely
random.

Martin its the strangest thing though

Its not your typical crash and no minidump is created, all that happens is
you find yourself back at your desktop just like you have alt-tabbed, but
theres no CSS running and no HL.EXE process to be found anywhere.

Is that what happens to everybody else?

I just wanted to report that the 'crashing bug' when people join the
Terrorist team seems to be back.  We noticed then when playing some clan
matches last night on our server.  This is after the latest update.
This had been there two updates ago - but seemed to be fixed on the
update on Aug. 30th.  It is now back again - although I'm happy to
report that the 'Dead Spectate' bug DOES seem to be fixed now.

This entire crashing of CS Source happened in 3 different matches when
the 5 members swapped from CT over to T.  It doesn't seem to affect the
CT side though - oddly enough.

Anyway, wanted to report - and hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Let me know if any more information of logs are needed.

I forgot to mention that downloading those 3 files during the verification
process kept my server's connection with the download server alive long
enough to not result in the "connection reset" error.

So, the temporary fix is to delete an official file or two or three so that
the update tool requests them sometime during the verification process.

Yeah, your hldsupdate tool will attempt to connect to your lowest ping'd
steam server - perhaps its overloaded.

May I suggest you *firewall/block* that steam server from giving you
updates, and then try running the updater again, and you should get a new
content server!

I checked this page - http://www.steampowered.com/status/status.html - both
today when I was trying to update, and the last time I tried to update,
because initially I was thinking the same thing (I remember the issues Valve
had with their content servers almost 2 yrs ago when CSS was first
released). According to that stats page, there was more than enough
bandwidth available to handle a multitude of servers at once, both this time
and last. So it's a safe bet to say that the steam content servers were not
overloaded at any point during today's update.

I suspect the Steam servers are more involved than previously stated.  The
ability (speed) of the client is very important to be sure, as a
non-responsive client will more likely be ignored.  Still, if the Steam
servers are getting overloaded, they will drop connections ("connection
reset by peer").

on my server is no firewall running ... other srcds updates worked fine, but

Whisper - I haven't altered any permissions on any of the server file
content. Nothing is set as read-only.

Andrew - before posting, I moved my server from behind the firewall and put
it directly on the 'net, no filters at all. Same problem, several times
over.

Trizik - I am getting the *exact* same error, on the exact same file (for
this update). I've tried deleting the file altogether to see if the update
tool will just download a fresh file instead of trying to overwrite the
existing one - didn’t work.

I'm curious what the session timeout value is for this process. But
something has definitely changed since the new de_train update (this is when
this problem started happening for me).

I suspect the Steam servers are more involved than previously stated.  The 
ability (speed) of the client is very important to be sure, as a non-responsive 
client will more likely be ignored.  Still, if the Steam servers are getting 
overloaded, they will drop connections ("connection reset by peer").

Reset by peer means the remote side closed the connection.

Be sure your firewall etc is not blocking Steam.

I have this exact same problem and like you mentioned it started 2 or 3
updates ago. When I run the update, it connects fine and then starts
verifying files. When it reaches a file that needs to be downloaded (
gameinfo.txt is the first one) it spits out this error:

Connection Reset, WinSock Error 10054 "Connection reset by peer"

I wrote about this last month after the 08/30/06 update. You can read my

Like you suggested, I also think it is the result of some kind of timeout. I
am running the server on an older machine so it takes a little longer to
verify files than modern hardware. And also like you mentioned, my only
solution is to do a new, complete full install. Big waste of bandwidth and
time. My server is running Windows XP.

To summarize, yes - I am having the same problem. Someone mentioned in my
previous post that this was common back in the early days of Steam because
there wasn't enough bandwidth to supply all the connections and that the
solution was to just keep trying. I don't think that's the case here because
the new, complete full install NEVER times out.
