Re: [hlds] Who plays HLDMS

2007-05-10 Thread Ooks Server
[ Converted text/html to text/plain ]
I used Microsoft Visual FoxPro. I found a csv with ip to country listings,
imported into a database, took all of my logs, imported them into another
database, stripped out all non-connect entries, leaving just the entries that
showed the players ip address. Stripped out all non-ip data from each entry,
and created a unique list of ip addresses. Wrote a quick and dirty ip
(xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) to ip (9) program (because on table had ips in
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx format, where the other had them in numeric format), and then
created a simple query that created an output list that would sum the total
number of unique ips per country. The code is crude, and a lot of the work is
done at the command line. It would take more time then it's worth to actually
take all of this and put it into a distributable module that others could take
and use :(
And when I lived in Saudi, gas was 30 cents a gallon :P

These are generated from the server logs by extracting the player's connect
IP address, stripping out duplicates and then doing a country lookup.

There are always a few bogus extra IP counts due to dynamic IP addresses,
but not that many (a percent of the total or so).

I cross verify the total count against the total number of unique SteamIDs
during the same period of time just to make sure something weird isn't
happening.

There will always be more IP addresses then SteamIDs since there will always
be connections that never actually enter the server.

Doing a detailed SteamID VS IP address correlation is more difficult since
the event times can vary and no one log line carries both pieces of
information (WON logs had this but not Steam).

There is at least one Server Stats program that will prepare a list like
this automatically (I'm not sure which, might be superhebbe).

Here is mine. Very interesting. If I did the math right, I had 7547
players
from the US, and 17,648 from the rest of the world. Assuming each unique
IP
= a player. I could have matched IP to Steam ID to eliminate duplicates
caused by players with dynamic IP and/or those that play from different
places, might make a bit of a difference.

I use 255 on my servers, with HLDM:S there just aren't enough servers to
make any difference, virtually all players will visit all servers looking
for a good game.

I just scanned my 2006 connection records for HLDM:S (52,531 unique IP
addresses) and here is the list of countries that players joined from:

Core2Duo's are probably the fastest now

Xeons based on the core2duos maybe faster, but they will also be very
expensive compared to regular core2duos and AMD's.

[hlds] CPU selection

2007-05-10 Thread Drew Hostetler

So I'm putting a new machine together to replace an older one that is
quite aged. The plan is to run 2 boosted 100 tick 12 or 13 man
private servers, one on each core. I'd have to upgrade the motherboard
and ram as well.

I'm just curious if there is much importance as to what kind of chip I
get? X2? Core 2 Duo? Xeon? Opteron? I've been looking at an X2 5600+
from AMD, but maybe there's something better out there for not too
much of a price difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Tony, I don't know how Ooks did his but I wrote a set of scripts and small
programs to do this, nothing that can be given out unfortunately. One of
these days I'll convert them into a single c++ or c# program but I'm too
busy to work on it right now.

Agh, I can't really not respond publically to that, can I? Sorry for yet
another post. I really hope we can stop this soon:

UN rankings: http://hdr.undp.org/ (look for HDI index in the HD Reports)

I don't live in the UK (though I've lived also there for about half a
year). Look at my mail address - I am Norwegian.

Cheers,
Einar
