Hi guys,

We identified a problem with the serverbrowser.dll build in the last
steamclient update. The more common crash case was using the in-game
overlay to join a friends game, but I believe it was the cause of this crash
as well. We have a public beta of the Steam client now with it fixed, if
you'd like to try that out and verify it fixes this issue for you that would
be great. Just go to the Account settings dialog in Steam and you can opt
into the beta client.

Thanks,

John McCaskey

Hi,

From the latest update there is a crash in the steamclient. When your
alt+tabbed out of the game(TF2 in this case), and you then try to join a
server (from windows), steam.exe crashes and it puts hl2.exe in a stall.

In the past it never used to do this, and people in our community use this
allot to join our gameservers when their on auto-retry.

Would you mind looking into the issue?

Saint K.

Hi,

I found that steam.exe doesn't crash anymore, thought hl2.exe still crashes
when you switch servers outside from tf2.

Cheers,

Being able to alt-tab out of your game to administrate the server IS

And you need to be able to alt tab to whatever admin utilities you run, or
a remote session to the server, from the client machine you use to test.

 You DO test, don't you?

Just about anything that involves the client impacts the server.
Don't client update notices get sent to this list?

2009-03-10 Thread Patrick Shelley
Im posting it here, as it happened on my server (just so knob head doesnt
chime in with the usual 'Relevant to server administation' bollox)

A guy tonight (on my server) explained how to get the hunter to crouch with
no sound whilst being able to move around at very fast speeds.

To do it, while in spawn mode, stand in the middle of an object, in this
case he showed me using a wooden crate. Crouch, then spawn.

You are then permanently crouching with no sound made by the hunter and you
are able to move etremely fast. This glitch goes after your first pounce.

BTW - the hunter safe room door glitch is still very much alive. i got
f***ed by it tonight.

Re: [hlds] New? Hunter Exploit

2009-03-10 Thread Brent Veal
You walk into an object like a crate, door, rail, etc, then tap crouch, then
walk out of the object. At this point, you're permanently in crouch mode
until you tap crouch again, even when you spawn. However you dont make any
noise at all and you move at running speed, making for an easy pounce.

I'm not arsed, i'll use the exploit until Valve fix it themselves.

As for writing it, its already been done - our Jake did it earlier:

solitaire - works for me!

It shows you though, how we were all having a nice laugh until you and Ricky

2009-03-10 Thread Richard Eid
As always, it's best to e-mail these exploits to someone at Valve directly,
or to Support, instead of broadcasting them, in detail, here on the list.
Forcing Valve's hand to fix these doesn't do much for the players until a
fix comes out. All you have done, again, is share the details of an exploit
that people will use to ruin the experience of the game for people who want
to play it seriously.

It's not just that hackers/cheaters sign up for the list to find stuff
like this, because there are plenty of other means for getting this this
type of information, but there are people on the list that will use this
exploit only because they now know how to do it. Then they'll share the
details of it with other people, who share it with even more people, and so
on and so forth.

I thought this was clear the last time you posted an exploit? Or maybe I'm
just not getting the point of posting another exploit, with details.

Re: [hlds] New? Hunter Exploit

2009-03-10 Thread Bruce Potter
Richard, some folks think that publicly disclosing the vulnerability
is actually the best way to handle these situations. There's a long
standing debate regarding the merits of full disclosure and its impact
on the user community, vendors, and admins. Not that wikipedia is the
authority on all this, but there's a decent description of the problem
there:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_disclosure

There are certainly pros and cons to both sides of the argument...
however I don't think it's accurate to say the best course of action
is to just email Valve. I, for one, don't have any problem with this
info being mailed to this list (as if my opinion counts here). The
ppl who want to exploit these vulnerabilities are already aware of
them. Might as well let the admins know what's going on and hopefully
hold Valve's feet to the fire a bit.

Forcing Valve's hand to fix these doesn't do much for the players
 until a
fix comes out. All you have done, again, is share the details of an
 exploit
that people will use to ruin the experience of the game for people
 who want
 to play it seriously.

It's not just that hackers/cheaters sign up for the list to find
 stuff
like this, because there are plenty of other means for getting this
 this
type of information, but there are people on the list that will use
 this
exploit only because they now know how to do it. Then they'll share
 the
details of it with other people, who share it with even more people,
 and so
 on and so forth.

I thought this was clear the last time you posted an exploit? Or
 maybe I'm
just not getting the point of posting another exploit, with details.

I agree with this notion. Plus the fact that it means I can ban people who
would exploit such things in the future from my servers.

Once an exploiter, always an exploiter. ;)

 there:

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_disclosure

There are certainly pros and cons to both sides of the argument...
however I don't think it's accurate to say the best course of action
is to just email Valve. I, for one, don't have any problem with this
info being mailed to this list (as if my opinion counts here). The
ppl who want to exploit these vulnerabilities are already aware of
them. Might as well let the admins know what's going on and hopefully
hold Valve's feet to the fire a bit.

Rick, OK - i left school decades ago, but seeing as you havent, heres me
sinking to your level.

You called me retarded, stupid, accused me of being lame.

Take a look at your posts. You started on me before i started on you. Fact.

I just came into the IRC to offer an olive branch to both you and sleeper
only for msleeper to get all in a hissy fit because he doesnt like the way
i've replied to him. Many people have been insulted by him needlessly and as
he doesnt reward 'stupidity' - i dont reward his rudeness. I wont be trying
again.

The jabs, were just that - jabs - i didnt even mention his name ffs. If you
feel the over whelming need to defend him thats your deal.

As for your picture, i have no idea what it means, and neither do i have the
urge to need to know.

  Hey everyone,

I've released a plugin that hopefully fixes the Host_Error crashes that a

does not require metamod or Sourcemod. It can be loaded in the middle of
 a
game with no noticeable load time. After loading the plugin, you should
change the map for the plugin to take any action.

You can download it from my website:

I'm making no guarantees with the first version and I need your help
testing. I've been running it on my servers and noticed immediate
improvement. Also, voogru is running it on his servers and everything
 seems
  fine so far.

Also, this is not some amazing fix-everything plugin and will not fix any
unrelated crashes or prevent your server from lagging or give you insane
  FPS
  or anything.

  String Table Blocker

  Date: 2/25/09
  Creator: Drunken F00l, www.sourceop.com

This plugin prevents the following crash (or ones similar):
Host_Error: Overflow error writing string table baseline Scenes

It works by removing a bunch of stuff from the string tables. The goal of
  this
is to remove enough stuff so that a client can connect without causing an
overflow when the server tries to send the client all of the string
 tables.
  By
default, it will remove almost all scene (vcd) files and defer all of
 them
  from
being added until use. The taunt scenes will be removed which will break
  taunts.
This can be controlled by one of the CVARs. Adding taunts back in may or
  may
  not
cause an overflow message and hasn't been thoroughly tested.

  CVARs:
  stb_blocktaunts
   - Blocks taunts from being processed. (defaults to on)
  stb_blockunused
   - Blocks unused table entries. Should always be enabled. (defaults to
 on)
  stb_cutspy
   - Blocks spy scene table entries. (defaults to on)
  stb_cutvoicemenu
   - Blocks all vcd related to voice menu and responses. (defaults to on)
  stb_deferallscenes
   - Doesn't enter scene table entries until use. (defaults to on)
  stb_verbose
   - Displays messages to console when action is taken. (defaults to off)
