It's described in the server as Use CPU busy-loop for improved timer
precision (dedicated only). Without it, it looks like the server runs
nanosleep to wait 1300 ns or 1400 ns (at least, in an empty
server -- with a busy one, I'd expect this to be less), then submits one
or more 100 ns sleeps in order to align with its desired next tick
time. With it enabled, it appears that the server just submits one
nanosleep and then spins the rest of the time for its alignment.

Modern Linux kernels are quite precise when it comes to timers, at least
when slack is disabled (using chrt or other means). Are there plans to
take advantage of this with more precise sleeps from the get-go?

Re: [hlds] Mandatory TF2 update coming Wednesday

2011-10-11 Thread Tony Paloma
Every frame, the engine will sleep until it's time for the next tick. However,
the Sleep system call may be imprecise and wake the process up slightly later
than intended. Setting host_timer_spin_ms will reduce the value passed into
Sleep by that many milliseconds, but will cause the process to busy wait for
longer while it waits for the next tick and thus increase CPU usage. The var
will not improve your framerate if you're constantly below 66 (i.e. a bogged
down server), but may improve consistency on a sub-second scale.

Every frame, the engine will sleep until it’s time for the next tick. However,
the Sleep system call may be imprecise and wake the process up slightly later
than intended. Setting host_timer_spin_ms will reduce the value passed into
Sleep by that many milliseconds, but will cause the process to busy wait for
longer while it waits for the next tick and thus increase CPU usage. The var
will not improve your framerate if you’re constantly below 66 (i.e. a bogged
down server), but may improve consistency on a sub-second scale.

A TF2 server dies if it receives ~100 empty packets per second (Linux, i don't
know if this is true for Windows).

Every frame, the engine will sleep until it’s time for the next tick.
However, the Sleep system call may be imprecise and wake the process up
slightly later than intended. Setting host_timer_spin_ms will reduce the
value passed into Sleep by that many milliseconds, but will cause the

Re: [hlds] Mandatory TF2 update coming Wednesday

2011-10-11 Thread Dominik Friedrichs
I once got hold of some small server flood tool, and since I lost that I
wrote a crude Perl script that just sends these empty UDP packets to a
given address. I can mail it if its any use to you.

When sending about 50 packets per second (probably something close to
the tick frequency) it will introduce heavy lag on the server.

But a good server admin usually has patched this up, for example via DoS
Attack Fixer or something.
