Yea right on, where is the email going? Luckily we only need one extra
account as TCAdmin will distribute to all our other servers.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get told, too bad, that was a mistake.
But an extra account for this would be very nice.

Re: [hlds] SteamCmnd and such

2012-07-06 Thread Kyle Sanderson
I was under the impression there was a very simple bash script posted on
the CS:GO wiki to use gpg to protect user details? Regardless, I can't
update my servers without logging out of my 'Main' Steam account. While I'm
hoping there are future updates for the game (CS:GO), it has been a huge
pain to re-grab or update server files at the moment. The WebAPI currently
allows for multihomed login support, maybe this would be a better solution?
I am aware of the poor uptime it gets, but at this point, having the option
to use either or would solve a couple issues.

Thanks,
Kyle.

Re: [hlds] Steam CMD

2012-07-06 Thread c0m4r
SteamCMD so far is a big failure on Linux. The Linux version of the tool
recently had the MS Windows characters in it which is ridiculous. As a user I
had to guess what this tool meant to download server files.

- Steam.sh was written incorrectly, with old-style code.
- Define a STEAMEXE variable before running the script is illogical. The script
with no variable should search for a correct file or return an error.
- Messages in many places overlap each other.
- The tool does not return to a new line very often.
- It does not inform you that you need to set the server path.
- It does not inform you that you need to enter steam guard code.
- It performs the connections to servers outside the Valve, making it difficult
to pass through the firewall rules.

The idea is good, but the execution leaves much to be desired.

I do not consider myself as an expert. I respect your work Valve. But your
tool should not be used in stable games. It should be released as a beta
version at least, if not alpha.

[hlds] SteamCmnd and such

2012-07-06 Thread G. Hutchinson
It is time of the year for me to ramble again... Read if you like, do
not if you don't.

1. Please, when replying, be courteous and take a second to delete
the 40 posts below your reply. It makes the list in everyone's email
easier to read. At least it does for me and I am the center of the universe.

2. Ahh I see since the inception for the mailing list, it is time for
the yearly discussion of why and when Valve releases updates (yay,
thanks to whoever brought it up, we almost forgot).

Everyone opinion on the updating topic does not matter and once you
realize it, the mailing list community will dub you "Veteran mailing
list member" and you will get a TF2 hat and receive a badge in the
mail sent to your house (upon receipt of your urine sample, used for
for Jarate).

Valve is updating a game the masses play, and we should all be
grateful when where and how those updates come to us. I for one
sometimes pee a little. The end and settled.

3. Thank you Alfred for clarifying SteamCommand for us. It sheds some
light. Firstly, say Hi to Batman for me (he left one of his capes
here and my son won't quit running around the house and on occasion
my wife makes me where it to bed, so I would appreciate he coming to
get it. I also do not appreciate my son calling me "Fatman" so tell
him I said haha, very funny). Yay, it is fun to make fun of peoples
name. Fletcher, Fletch Chevy Chase... Good times Vacation... Fun.

Next, I personally, although it is an inconvenience to log in with my
username and pw to the little program, I do not mind so much. My
issue with it is I have a few "Sr Admins" that have access to the
box. So I have to wipe the username and pw after the updating. This
puts a damper on my little update scripts. So that is my only
inconvenience at the time. With you going to anon login in the future
that addresses that issue for me.

HOWEVER, (you thought I was done talking didn't you. Silly
you) HOWEVER, I think it would be brilliant BRILLIANT I
SAY To FORCE community server operators such as ourselves to tie
the server download to an accountable account. That would be a good
way to start wiping out a lot of servers that are... Lets say,
unsavory... And you can collect even more personal data on us for the NWO.

Most of the dedicated servers are free and have no restrictions on that (If
you do not own CSS, you can still download the dedicated server for it)..
The log-in requirement for CS:GO is going to expire as it moves out of beta
and into full usage. I expect the DS will be free at that point without
restriction.

besides CS:GO I don't know of a dedicated server that requires
authentication to download offhand, but I have no tried them all. One the
no log-on feature gets added you should have what you have today, but with
the added ability to cache the content on your proxy.

For paid games that have dedicated servers freely available, you _already_
can login with an empty steam account (check killing floor for instance -

I think you missed one crucial part of Alfred's email:

- the login you use for steamcmd just needs rights to the game you are

You do not need to purchase the games to have access to most of the
dedicated server applications available on Steam. If you're not convinced,
simply create a new Steam account and take a look at the "Tools" section of
the Steam library to see for yourself.

“- currently steamcmd requires a steam login to perform an update, we plan

So even in the future, if it’s a PAY 19.99 game you would still need a log-
in name?

That’s murder for us that have 10 games on a box. We want the customers to
DL the updates like we do/did with the hlds tool.

Now we have to DL the patches and mass update everyone. How is that
progress?

Re: [hlds] Mandatory Team Fortress 2 Update Released

2012-07-06 Thread Mart-Jan Reeuwijk
As for "server" accounts, why not have a "hardlinked" server account to ones
main account. like main login is then "mysuperawsomeusername" and the server
login "mysuperawsomeusername.server" or w/e that only can be used to
download/update/run servers, and can have multiple logins. With that one having
a separate password, any security concerns on the accounts is mitigated, as
that cannot be abused, and server owners can still use normally their account
in the client.

The creation of such "hardlinked" account can be arranged via a steam form if
logged on on steam etc, so naming conflicts can be solved right away.

2012-07-06 Thread Valentin G.
Yeah that's my main gripe with it. If you allow all accounts into the
system though you might aswell drop the requirement to login alltogether.

If we need to own the games to host servers at least allow simultanous
login to both SteamCMD and the desktop client.

I would like to hear why this is done anyway, I can somehow get behind it
for CS:GO as it's a closed beta right now (although restricting server file
access is still weird) but
why introduce this to games already released. It's just an inconvenience.

This is not that big of an issue for F2P but buying extra $30+ games just

Re: [hlds] Steam CMD

2012-07-06 Thread Joe Powell
It wouldnt be so bad if for example, you could use it with any account.

For CSGO, its beta, so your account has to have access to it? Or am I
wrong, in which case, we might aswell all create new steam accounts for
server purposes.

I'm not liking it either. I can't update my servers when playing games at
Steam. It would be nice if it didn't sign off my Steam.
