Barely anyone? Working just the way it should be?

So I guess the thousands of posts detailing how stupid the changes were +
the thousands of people who have almost 0 servers now, are just making the
problem up huh?

Clear;y there is still major problems. Instead of making a post pretending
that everyone is happy, just because YOU are happy, why not try and help us
come up with a solution that makes everyone happy.

Once again assuming that just because I post to this list from home, that I
must be running my dedicated server from there as well. I'm not, but even if
I were, it wouldn't make your post any less stupid.

I had enough of Valves incompetence and lack of concern for it's most loyal
players that pay money for a server so they can make money off of us.

Ahahaha. And this is the best part. When's the last time you've seen any
game company say, Yessa, Massa! and change something instantly, when
barely anyone complains about it, and actually seems to be working just the
way it should be? Valve's certainly not perfect. But then again, who is?

And for the last time, home based servers are MORE than adequate (in most
cases). Just because you decided to use a sizeable amount of money to have
someone run a server for you, doesn't make you any better than the next guy,
and you certainly don't deserve any special treatment.

Hi Guys,

Going thru the posts from august to today about the serverlist,
community, not seeing calif and texas servers and the new masterlist
system, there are over 100+ posts

That said, NO response from Valve!!!

I will not kiss and tell however, I have been in contact off the list
with some members of this list and a person from Valve.

Valve thinks the new list is the best thing since sliced bread and other
GSP's have been going crazy with servers missing off the list and
support issues because of this is hammering us bigtime.

Server connections are way down, servers loads are way down on whether
it's a machine with good IP's or bad ips, they both are way down.

Looking back at last years server use graphs in aug/sept, we see a 30%
drop this year.
Some might say people are playing Source this year so 1.6 numbers are
down, Lets not forget we got the 1.5 guys to 1.6 this year so it's a
wash.

When they created this new masterist they had the best intentions I'm
sure, but in doing so they broke something, causing numerous servers not
to be listed at all, most being in TEXAS and CALIFORNIA.

If they cant fix this new list, why not go back to the old list system?

End result is this new masterlist is a BAD idea in more ways than one.

Ok I have a debug version of qstat with fixed steam master server
support up and running. Can everyone download and run with the
following command line:
qstat -stm,game=cstrike 207.173.177.12
URL:
http://gaming.multiplay.co.uk/downloads/qstat-steam_debug.zip

Note: This is purely a debug version and will not actually query
the servers its is ONLY testing the master server response.

The output will be something like:
No servers = 232, 1
No servers = 463, 2
...
No servers = 29610, 129
Total servers = 29609, 129

The source code is there for anyone who wants to compile it
under linux etc.

For those on linux or who have a packet capture program
installed you may wish to run it up while running this test.
What we are looking for is the number of packets
sent / recieved from the master 207.173.177.12.

If the number of packets recieved differs from the
second number reported by qstat in the last line we could
be looking at an out of order issue. Currently on the
reciept of a packet ending in a NULL address qstat
will terminate processing. Im not sure if steam does the
same thing or not but this may running it will at least
provide us with a good idea on what is going on.

It does seem to be firewall related. When connected through the firewall
I never see more than 4000. I just did a test by-passing the firewall
and saw almost 19000 servers. It seems the master server is providing
all the server names to the browser. The browser then queries each
server. If the browser does not get a response it does not display the
server. Thus the 4000 server I would see were just those the firewall
let through.

I also tried setting my steam speed to 56k modem to see if a smaller
flow would perform better, but it made no difference. My concern is if
this is a common problem a large percentage of the 118,000 users of
steam may only be able to see a very small fraction of the servers out
there.

Your issue may be your local firewall limiting the number of UDP/TCP
sessions. The server update will set most home/consumer firewalls off as
an attack (udp flood) and it can easily quit accepting new connections
until the old ones are gone. I have the same issue when I game on my
Netscreen firewall since it limits to 2000 active sessions. I just
simply connect to my Pix firewall and get the full list.

Before stupidly demanding things get changed back. Find out what the
problem
is. Have you done a trace on the connection? What's the packet dump you
are seeing. Is there any loss? Are you seeing out of order packets? Is the
MTU correct on all parts of the network between you and the master servers?
Obviously leaving it over night is not needed the results should not pause

RE: [hlds] Where has all the traffic gone?

2004-09-10 Thread -GB-Carpy
Did I say that MY server was the best, and your one was puny? NO.

I don't think you should even be here. Why not remove yourself from this
list and then go and post your insults and childish bickering on
www.steampowered.com

It's a fact that the new system means that the professionally run well
specced servers aren't all going to come first now.

This is my point. And if I may say so, your instant name calling / childish
reply just adds weight to my argument. I wonder how you would admin your
server !

RE: [hlds] Server not listed?

2004-09-09 Thread -GB-Carpy
That would be the new gay Steam listing method. It displays servers to you
in order based on your IP.

Im guessing those that cant see it have a IP which is very different to your
servers, and the wonderful Steam server list is giving up the ghost before
even getting the the server.

Either that or u need a HLDS update

We recently added two more CS servers.
We have been getting a lot of reports that players can't see the server if
they do a full refresh. All other servers on our network can be seen,
except the new ones.

Personally it works fine for me, but i've had 20+ people tell me they can't
see it when they refresh all servers.

I'm not 100% sure, but there's nothing we have to do to register servers is
there?
I wanted it listed on steam, any ideas why it's not being added for some
users?

Cheers, DarK

totally inappropriate for this list. Questions like this should be addressed

What has changed in the last week or two? My modest little 6 player server
used to be maxed out most of the time, but about a week or so ago, the
traffic dropped off, and now it sits there empty. I don't believe there are
any router or connectiity issues, as a few players do come and go, and I can
access it fine. Last weekend it was empty all weekend. Weekends usually see
it maxed 24/7.

RE: [hlds] Re: [hlds_linux] ServerBrowser Update

2004-09-03 Thread -GB-Carpy
The whole point is, the new way is not random at all. It is based on
whatever the clients IP is. If your IP is 82.xx.xx.xx then the servers will
listed as 81.xx.xx.xx then 83.xx.xx.xx then 80.xx.xx.xx then 84.xx.xx.xx.

Seeings as Steam loves to give up the ghost after only downloading about 300
servers sometimes, it means most people only see servers which have an IP
practically the same as their own IP. Not very helpful if you are using a
NAT router with a WAN address...

I have had people ask me for some IPs of decent servers because they can't
get any good ones in their list. Strangely enough, I can't give them any
because all I see is crappy servers hosted on domestic bandwidth
connections.

What have we done to solve this...well we have started playing
Americas Army instead.

I agree that a professional server isn't anymore important than a
amateur one run from home, but from a player experience point of view you
just don't get the same ping / commection / quality of game as you do when
you connect to a pro server.

Bring back the old IP fourth octet system. The servers which will actually
have gone to the trouble of obtaining a low fourth octet IP will be good
quality, low ping, and well run and thus will give the player a good
experience.

We will be releasing an update to the ServerBrowser in the next couple
of weeks. This update will add the ability to view both Source and HL1
games in the same server list.

We released an update for HL1 game servers on August 11th to support
this new serverbrowser (in particular we added a new query to the
out-of-band protocol). If you have not updated your server with this
engine update then your server will not show up in clients
serverbrowsers once we release the new serverbrowser. To ensure you have
this new engine run the hldsupdatetool with the update command.

Funny, that's exactly what I wanted to know. So I searched every file
in
the
 Steam directory and nothing.
Near as I can tell it is stored in Windows Virtual Memory. You can
observer
this by watching the amount of virtual memory used go up as you
refresh
the
list, and stop if you stop refreshing (Open Windows Task Manager in
XP, in
view menu select columns, then check the Virtual Memory Size
checkbox).
This
could also just be the extra memory needed by the application to sort
and
display the list, but I don't think so. If you exit Steam it frees up
the
memory (obviously). Upon restarting Steam it will download a new list
when
you open the Server browser to the Internet Tab. The full list will
always
take up approximately the same size of virtual Memory.

I didn't get to spend too much time on this, as I was supposed to be
working. :) It just piqued my curiosity. I had to know.

Erm well you and your friends must be wired to the Valve office or
something.

Every single person I speak to has incorrect pings in the master server
list. When they add them to favourites though, the pings are shown correctly
which must mean there is NO problem with us, but a problem with the list
itself.

I didn't get to spend too much time on this, as I was supposed to be
working. :) It just piqued my curiosity. I had to know.

Does anyone know if/where/how to rip the list of game servers provided
by
the STEAM client? I get 19,000 or so out of the 28,099 that w00t.net
pulls
from the master server tables. I want to parse the data and figure
out
which servers are NOT being displayed.

My 19,000 is with ALL filters removed.
