[hlds] Timelimits changing

2004-09-26 Thread CorpseHumper
I have a dedicated machine running Windows 2003 Server. It's a P4
2.4G with 1G ram, rented from a server company that has a bunch of
machines in a room with 2 OC3 lines feeding them.

I was running a 1.6 server, Condition Zero, and a CS:Source server on
the machine.

I noticed that when I had the Source server running, not only would it
cause erratic lag problems with the other servers (even when it was
empty) but the mp_timelimit variable on my other servers would change
by itself.

If I shutdown the Source server, map times stay constant. I restarted
it for two days, map timers keep increasing to 55, then 75, then 90
minutes. Anyone else seen anything like this, or seen any other odd
interactions when running multiple servers on the same dedicated
machine?

The resource problem seems to be separate for the map timer. I can
run several instances of 1.6 and/or CZ with reasonable player limits,
and they don't appear to break the server's back, so to speak. But
with Source running, and just a few players in the other servers, it
starts acting like it's really overwhelmed.

Re: [OT] [hlds] Anyone know these players?

2004-09-06 Thread CorpseHumper
Typically, if I don't have solid evidence that a player is cheating, I
gauge my actions based on the rest of the players.

What I mean is,... sometimes there will be 20 people in the server,
and one person comes in and goes 40-0. People start leaving, griping
constantly, and calling him a hacker.

He might not be hacking or cheating. He might very well be THAT good.
But if that player is so good he running the rest of my players off
the server, he's got to go.

112-0 is way over the top. My severs have n00bfest in the title,
and hackers come in there sometimes that don't go 112-0...

There is another system at www.clan-fate.com but there has been rumours

These scores do seem highly improbable but not un-heard of in this

The players most probably use scripts and exploit the million bugs that
are in the mod, this is what makes them incredibly fast and able players

The server also seems full of new players so I can't say that it wasn't
too hard to get those scores

If you are wanting a reason to have them banned, you could claim that

Re: [hlds] AMD or Intel?

2004-08-18 Thread CorpseHumper
Is there a mailing list somewhere that I can join that
actually has something to do with running a dedicated
server?

What's up with the video card and CPU debates? I'm
not sure about the rest of you, but I'm pretty busy.
Aside from being spammed already, I don't enjoy
fishing through an additional 40 emails a day to see 4
or 5 that are actually helpful.

Watch... this will spawn an all-new, off-topic debate
on spam filters and mailing list politics. I can't
wait to see how many useless mails I have tonight.

Re: [hlds] VAC Update?

2004-08-18 Thread CorpseHumper
I started to try and be funny and simply send a one
word reply that said HACKER.

I had 3 servers running 1.5 up until they shut down
the WON auth servers. Two of them were really popular
and stayed packed constantly (my IRC channel actually
had people in it waiting for open slots). The only
way I've found to completely safeguard your server
from malicious cheaters is to have a butt-load of
trusted admins.

For the 2 main servers, I had built a list of over 40
admins. At any given time of the day or night, I was
likely to have 2-3 admins on each server.

Sure, I had occasional admin fights and abuse
complaints. I would have to post things on my forums
reminding admins of the rules from time-to-time. But
it's better than having some hacking faggot join your
server, go 40-0 and run everyone out of there.

As far as the clever or marginal hackers go (those who
simply turn on the hacks from time to time) we can
only hope that, as hack detection improves, they have
to keep trying to get new CD keys to get back in the
game.

As long as they aren't scaring off the rest of my
regulars, it doesn't matter as much. I've had
regulars that ended-up getting banned because their
cousin came over and downloaded hacks onto their
computer and got them banned. That's just a cover
story for the fact that VAC updated and they got
banned as soon as they joined. Cut your losses and
ban their new ID also. They can't be trusted.
They're either lying about it, or too stupid for
words.

Software programs and patches can only do so much to
help us out. They can thin the herd of hackers down
to a managable level. Beyond that, it takes real
human intervention and monitoring. Sure... sometimes
good players get banned just because they're good
players. You wanna know something? If they're so
good that the n00bs are leaving the server in
frustration, it's time to boot them anyway. I'd
rather boot one innocent good player and save my
newbie population. Then again... all of my servers
have n00bfest in the title. ;-)

I will not lie, but i have cheated before. But,
 the world changes, so as
cheats. I host a superhero server, and sometimes it
 takes hours if people
hack, i have been begging for a VAC update, but one
 day i figured out that
the cheats are going to evolve just as VAC does.
Then one day i got my steam id banned after an
 update ( i am not a smart
cheater ) Well, i got a copy of counter-strike, and
 played, and as time went
by, everyone started to notice the increasement of
 people hacking, and
 hacking, and hacking.
One day i decide to install skins in my cs, and i
 get my steam id banned,
i buy a copy of CZ just for the CS:Source and i
 play again. I have quit
playing cs. There are too many cheaters.
And that about people getting banned because
 they're just good, it
happened to me once and only once and its probably
going to be my only one.
Also, i dont think that 3/4 of the cs population
 cheats, i think it is
much less then 1/3 , but what i do know is that it
 is increasing. I hope the
people at Valve are reading these posts, we really ,
 really , need an
 update.
A reason in the increasements is the shut down of
 WON, i do believe that
at least 3/4 of the cs population in WON did cheat,
 but a big reason that
there's more cheaters in 1.6 servers is the 1.5ers
 moving on.
Someone here said that he had to go into at
 least 5 different servers
for there not to be any blatant cheaters, i think
 your exagerating a little
bit there. But then again, your could be not
exagerating if you went into an
insecure server, which i do not see any point into
 going in one of those
unleess you have your steam id banned.
Well, that's what i think, but we should push
 valve for an update,
stand up for the non-cheating cs-community.

Come on now, I wasn't looking to start a flame war.
By your own admission I had a point with regard to the
vid card discussion. I was honestly just looking to
try and thin the number of useless emails coming
through the list daily.

I have no problem with discussing CPU requirements for
running X number of servers on a dedicated machine.

AMD vs. Intel discussions always end-up with dozens of
opinions and comparisons and frankly it's tedious
and tiresome for people that don't have CPU loading
issues. It's almost as bad as video chipset debates,
or religeon for that matter.

Can't someone just simply answer the questions? Do we
have to pick apart every maps's requirements and
compare bits vs. bytes and nVidia vs. ATI and good
grief, man

I have thus far refused to participate in the
 everyone hacks thread, but
last nights CS experience has left me so freakin mad
 that I need to vent
 somewhere!
I play only on a few servers, all West Coast. We
 definately have been
visited time to time by super-good players, and
 very infrequently by
someone with very questionable skills. Most of the
 servers are regulars so
we know everyone who plays there and the regs
 usually pressure the hacks
 away pretty quickly.
Last night I jump on for a few rounds before bed.
 Headshot, headshot,
headshot, headshot - my whole freakin team dead, and
 all this within about 2
seconds of round start. A player named knife was
 using every hack
 imaginable: speed, aimbot, wall, everything!
 Typically when someone is this
blatant, everyone will vote him off fairly quickly.
 Last night the regs were
the minority and no one on the other team would vote
 against this guy. This
totally pissed me off. I was cussing everyone out,
 and eventually started
taunting the other players because they wouldn't
 vote against him. I really
didn't get it. This guy would kill everyone on my
 team within 1-2 seconds
and no one on his team would kill anyone. They
 wouldn't even get a shot
off - how the heck can that be fun for anyone? But
 they wouldn't vote him
off! One of my favorite servers ruined by a freak
 hack and loser opponents
who obviously liked standing around doing nothing.
 wow.
So there's my vent / rant / etc.
Hopefully, VAC will continue to improve and somehow,
 somewhere, servers will
become a better place to play.

Hey Mike, you want to start, I don't know, bringing

 will you be quiet

And while you're at it... You may or may not have
 noticed this, but this
 isn't a forum, it's a listsrv, and adding a one line
 response on top of
about 22K of misquoted and mangled crap is about the
 most useless thing
a learned admin could do. There are people who get
 the digest of the
list and when you make posts like you did it
 completely destroys any
sense of continuity and needlessly bloats the
 digests. Not to mention
there are people on the list who have metered usage,
 so downloading all
these over-quoted responses does them no favors
 either.
You're using Outlook, so take a look at the great
 program Outlook
 Quotefix at

http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/outlook-quotefix/.
It'll automatically do things like strip out
 signatures and listsrv
footers (assuming they're properly delineated by
 --), put a sensible
quote header in, word wrap stuff, and move your
 cursor beneath quoted
material automatically. All you need to do is pick
 out the stuff you
don't want quoted and delete it, a task that takes
 about 5 seconds.

I have a CS:Source server running on a remote machine.
Everything seems to be working as well as can be

However, I cannot see the server in my favorites list
