[hlds] Customize the end of round scoreboard

2007-11-20 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Hi,

How can I customize the end of round scoreboard in HL2DM?
I have one server where the scoreboard just flashes at the end of round
while others stay up long enough to read.
I have also seen servers where the scoreboard is smaller so that players
can read the chat messages while the scoreboard is up.

thanks,
 nisbus

Half of the people can't play the Orange Box because of bluescreen

And all because of their own coding.

Re: [hlds] Please break custom maps that are using the EP2 engine

2007-10-09 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

I personally love that there are more maps out there. I've been playing
TF2 for about two weeks and after the first week most of the stock maps
were starting to get boring.
As for texturing, I couldn't care less. It's gameplay people are after.

Hello,

would it be possible to stop mappers from creating maps for TF2 by

those custom maps, often they don't fit the game style and the
textures are not looking like the original ones.

Please force the mappers to wait for the real SDK, thanks.

Thanks

PS: I don't want any answers like: Let the mappers do what they want.
I just don't like the idea of having crappy maps around before the SDK
is even released.

 Subject: [hlds] Admin Mod Questions

 Hey All

I'm recently re-subscribed to this list, I haven't been on
the list for about a year so please excuse me if these have
already been answered. (although I did search the archives first)

 I run a CSS and TF2 server.

 I have three questions:

 1. I used to run Mani Admin Plugin on my CSS box, but it is
my understanding that Mani is no longer supported. What admin
 plugin should I use?

 2. What admin plugin would work best with TF2?

 3. What is the best way to start srcds as a service under windows 2k3?

 Thank you for your help.

[hlds] Linux and custom maps

2007-08-18 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Hi (this is the third time I try to send this mail to the mailing list),

I have a two servers, one running Windows 2003 and another rented
running Linux (don't know which distro).
I have a few maps that have been very popular on my win server but seem
to crash my Linux server when it changes to it.
I asked the guys at support and this is what I got back:

There seems to be a few resources missing from your server or they are
there, but corrupt. The error message I get when trying to load
dm_snipe7 is this:

2007-08-18 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Ok, thanks.

I will try to contact the authors of the maps in question (this is only
one of about 10).
Why does it work on a windows server though?

How would one go about fixing this (and do you figure out what is wrong
in the first place)?

thanks,

Kevin Ottalini wrote:

Valdimar,
   These errors:

Error reading weapon data file for: weapon_annabelle
Error reading weapon data file for: weapon_bugbait

are meaningless errors reported by all servers on all maps.

The map in question: dm_snipe7.bsp has two design problems:

1. Bad func_usable_ladder - this must be fixed before this map will
run on
a linux server.
 http://QSextreme.com/linux_crashes/dm_snipe7.jpg

2. vphysics penetration - might cause items to fail to respawn properly
 http://QSextreme.com/linux_crashes/dm_snipe70002.jpg

It might be possible to repair the BSP without having to recompile it but
you should contact the map author if possible and see if he/she will
release
an update.

If you are unable to contact the author let me know by direct email
and I'll
see if I can perform a repair for you.

... heh, I just noticed that warning Precache of sprites/redglow1
ambigious
(no extension specified) has the word ambiguous mispelled.

[hlds] Clan battles

2007-07-08 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
Hi all,

I have a HL2DM server and I just hosted my first clan war.

I made a file called war_start.cfg for setting all the war settings i.e.
password, timelimit etc. since they were not the ones usually used on my
server.
I then added that file to the rconlist.txt (mani admin) so I could set
the game when I wanted.
This was all good and well but there are a few things that bother me
with running a war successfully.

1. When the server changes maps it reads the server.cfg again and all
the war settings are reset so I have to run the war_start file each map
change.
2. I have to manually set each map of the match (I didn't want to change
the mapcycle file for the match only)

the file I used had the following settings:

ma_war 1
sv_password password
mp_resetgame 60 //used for people changing teams for the first 60 seconds.
exec rm_wpn.cfg //used for removing the RPG during clan wars

I also tried adding:

map dm_x to the top of the file but that ignored the rest of the file.

So what I would like to be able to do is the following:

   1. Create an alternative server.cfg and add it as an rcon command.
   2. This file should have a reference to a different mapcycle file
(the mapcyclefile warcycle.txt didn't seem to work).
   3. It should also run the war_start.cfg so all the settings are correct.
   4. Finally it should change to the first map in warcycle.txt and use
  that as the mapcycle file.

Is this possible?
I hate having to be at the console the whole battle changing maps and
setting the settings of the server instead of just killing people :)
This would also enable people with less than full admin rights to
administrate clan wars just by clicking one rcon command from the admin
menu.

Note!
  I also made a file called war_end.cfg:
 ma_war 0
 sv_password
 exec server.cfg
which sets the server back to normal after the war.

How are you people organizing clan wars?

thanks,
  nisbus

[hlds] High CPU load

2007-05-30 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Hi,

lately my srcds.exe has been taking unusually much of the CPU on my
server (80-90%)
This is constant at this rate.

My hardware specs are:
 Intel Celeron 2.4 Ghz
 1GB RAM
 Windows Server 2003 standard OS

TickRate is 100

Here are my settings in server.cfg:

sv_mincmdrate 10
cl_cmdrate 101
cl_updaterate 101
sv_maxrate 2
sv_maxupdaterate 100
sv_minrate 3000
sv_minupdaterate 10
fps_max 600 // Frame rate limiter

I'm also running Mani, eventscripts and metamod.

Please help or otherwise I will be forced to shut down my server as I
need it for other stuff than srcds.

It was running fine and I'm not sure what happened to make it like this.

thanks,

[hlds] Sound and map download

2007-02-02 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Hi,

I have a HL2DM server and I've been trying to get sounds to play from
the game (e.g. lol, don't just stand there etc.)
I can see that when I connect to the server I download the sounds and I
can play them from the console but the ingame command for playing them
don't work.
Also I have a sneaking suspicion that users are having troubles
connecting to my server.
I recently installed Steam and HL2DM on a Linux partition on my computer
and I can connect to servers that are playing dm_lockdown and other
default maps but when I connect to my server it downloads all the sounds
and then gives me a missing map error and disconnects. I have also seen
from within the game that people are joining the game but then never
appear (it might be because they get tired of downloading.)

The server in question is located at 212.247.101.20:27015 if you care to
try it.

This is my soundlist:

//
// soundlist.txt
//
// Place all your client commands that you want to
// execute on all players in here
//
// This file can use aliases.
//
// Aliases are what is shown in the menu system
// a nice way of presenting the commands.
// Aliases must be enclosed in quotes
//
// E.G. Don't just stand there
//
// Do not put another quote inside like :-
//
// See Ya Later

// You do not have to use aliases but it makes the
// menu's easier to use if you do.

Re: [hlds] Counter-Strike 1.6 Vista sound issues

2007-01-30 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Just thought I'd throw in my two cents about the Linux/windows issue.

I've been setting up Ubuntu on my laptop and hoping I could move gaming
and other stuff I normally use in Windows on that.

First off, if you have an ATI card, forget it.
Getting Linux to just get a picture on screen took a couple of days (I'm
new to Linux so that explains some of it).
I still haven't been able to get headphone sound which is a known
problem and a big one for most gamers.

As for Steam:
Installing and running Steam is fine under Wine and basically works
the same way as on Windows.
Installation of HL2DM was easy through Steam.
HL2DM starts alright but there it ends.
DirectX isn't supported in Linux since it is proprietary technology
and although Wine support for it is ok you can't really
count on being able to play after a Steam update.
I haven't been able to take a single step in HL2DM since the game is
pretty much in a permanent state of lag.
Most of my problems can be linked back to the fact that I have an ATI
radeon mobility X700 card but it is probably too
much of a hassle for the serious gamer (unless you want to become a
serious Linux guru :))

Stay with XP until
A. Steam comes out with a Linux client.
B. Steam have gotten through the teething problems of Vista
C. You get tired of playing games ;)

Funny, that article was linked in the very first post...
Creative are working on another version of DirectSound, but very few
games
support it.
Also, Valve would be advised to fix this, do they really want there

I've had many problems concerning CS1.6 on Vista. EAX not working and
 others.

 http://pc.ign.com/articles/759/759538p1.html might be an
interesting read.

Maybe it's time Valve reprogrammed CS1.6 to comply with Vista? I'm
sure they've not yet completely given up this project, as it still
bring in money. However I am not sure they know why they cannot
increase the price a little, as cheaters seem to have no troubles
 buying new accounts.

[hlds] Bz2 compression

2006-08-23 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Hi,

I remeber Frazer recommending compressing the maps in Bz2 format for
faster downloading but I can't find any information on how to do that.

Anyone?

Also is anyone running HLStatsX and HL2MP?

I have heard the same thing about satellite Internet, it just cant
push a
constant steam of packets enough in order to hold the connection for
online
gaming.

But ill do some research and see if I can't find out if theres a way

I have a 26 slot DOD server in LA ca. You can try to connect to it and
maybe theres other things we can do to get your pings down to were
you can
at least play a little.

Try setting your rates in your config.cfg to the following.

Rate 3000 to 5000 you may want to try lower like around 2500. I'm
not sure
how low you can go.
Cl_updaterate 10 or 20 don't go any lower then 10.
Cl_cmdrate 10 to 20 don't go any lower then 10.

Also you might want to disable all of the other things that lower FPS
too
just incase you are able to connect and play some.
Heres my servers IP address 64.69.32.190:27015 www.ethugsrus.net

Good luck I know it sucks not to be able to play such an awesome game.

I've heard first person shooters weren't doable on satellite
internet due
to latency but I've also seen some claim that it can be done. I've
moved
out in the boondocks and was pretty much resigned to no dod or any
other
games, however every once and a while I really get the urge to play.
What a
great game! The server screen indicates pings of 500 plus and I usually
can't even log on to a server. Presumably they have the pings
requirements
set lower. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do about this or if
there is anyone who has a list of servers with less stringent ping
requirements. Every once and a while I just really get the urge to
play.

Are there tweaks I could use to reduce my ping time or am I pretty much
stuck at about 6 seconds of delay for the uplink? I'd even settle for
spectating a game every once and a while if I can't play but I can't
seem to
even get on to a server at all. The nuclear fallout.net servers
seem to
all kick me or rather not let me on. I'm not sure of this server
host now
dominates most servers or if it is just that silly kind of lagging
message
bug that seems to occur in the server host window.

I wonder what ever happened to that internet over the power lines
technology
they used to talk about so much?

There are a number of clever ways that this has been automated and I am sure
others can point you in the right direction. The simplest method is to
download the free bzip2 from wherever it lurks and bzip your map files
manually. Your bzipped maps go in your sv_download directory. The file names
are the same, except with the .bz2 suffix ADDED to the end.

e.g. dod_churchyard_b5.bsp.bz2

That's all you need.

I have run hlstatsx and hl2mp - works okay.

2006-08-18 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Hi,

Now I'm almost happy with my server :)

I want to add sounds to it and I've added the sound folder in my virtual
dir (does sv_downloadurl pertain to maps only?)
I've edited the soundlist.txt in my mani admin folder and all the sounds
there point to sound/subdir/filename.
I've also set mani_quakesounds (can't remember the cvar name exactly) to
1 and downloaded the quake sound pack from mani.

I have both the default sounds .wav and .mp3 files in the soundlist.txt
(mp3's are 128kbs and 44100hz)
I also added .wav and .mp3 in the MIME types in IIS.
When I connect to my server I don't download the sounds and they don't
come up in-game.

What's the problem?

Another thing is the MODT.txt file. I've added some text to it that is
bigger than the box and the scrollbar shows that there is more content
there but when I scroll down only the scrollbar moves (not the content).

Also, is it possible to have for example different gravity settings for
each map?

What I have is an aspx page in my download url

sv_downloadurl http://game.server.i.p/?f=;

When the server gets a request

default.aspx?f=/maps/de_westwood.bsp for

example, I stream out the /maps/de_westwood.bsp from the game server
directory. I limit the files that can be streamed by

coding the approved

file types in my aspx file. For example, I allow
txt,bsp,wav,tga,mdl,wad,bz2,dem. Any other requested file

like /server.cfg

would return a 404 error in the code.

I do not have to move any files. Your server will not lag

if you have

enough bandwidth.

This is the error I get:

It's strange though that when I try to connect the progressbar moves
beyond the bsp file and stops on the .ain file.
Also all the ain files are 1 kb and all of them seem to contain only #,
is that ok?

From what I've been reading from the forums it seems that this
sv_downloadurl isn't neccessary except for if you want to download the

following MIME types:

Extension: .ain MIME Type: application
Extension: .bsp MIME Type: application
Extension: .bz2 MIME Type: application (this last one for compressed
maps)

Not sure if it is necessary - but an IISRESET at this stage eases the nerves
of us paranoids.

Create the following sub-directory structure within your svdl directory.
(assuming D:\svdl):

D:\svdl\dod\maps
D:\svdl\hl2mp\maps
etc...

This is largely a matter of preference - but whatever structure and
convention you use, you need to be consistent with your sv_download cvar
setting.

Assuming you use the above structure, place your game maps in the
appropriate game map directory. From this point forward, I will assume you
are working with hl2dm. Your maps should all have the extension .bsp (or
bsp.bz2, if they are compressed with bzip2. - recommended - and yes, you
must specify the entire bsp.bz2).

Make sure you have files, with matching names, for all the maps in your
rotation.

In the server.cfg file for your game, specify the following two CVars:

sv_allowdownload 1
sv_downloadurl http://yourwebserver.woot/svdl/dod/;

shamelessPlug

If you are using ogsWatcher, specify the following CVar tags, in the
CVars section of your game config:

  CVar Name=sv_allowdownload Value=1 /
  CVar Name=sv_downloadurl
Value=http://yourwebserver.woot/svdl/dod/; /

/shamelessPlug

Start your game server in your preferred fashion. Map downloading should be
working.

To test: changelevel your server to some custom map that your game client PC
does not have. Connect and see if it downloads.

Hope this helps.

I added .bsp , .ain and .bz2 to the MIME types in IIS and now the

refuses to connect.

This is the error I get:
Missing map Maps/dm_agora.bsp disconnected (why is it referring to the

It's strange though that when I try to connect the progressbar moves
beyond the bsp file and stops on the .ain file.
Also all the ain files are 1 kb and all of them seem to contain only

From what I've been reading from the forums it seems that this
sv_downloadurl isn't neccessary except for if you want to download the
maps from somewhere else than your server. I have all of the maps on
my server and this new address is on the same server as the game
server. It doesn't even work to download them without the
sv_downloadurl so I'm wondering if this is still a port problem. Could

Finally the server is up and running and I've had my first visitors.
It seems that it was enough to open port 27015.

Now I wanted to get some new maps for the players on my server and so I
downloaded a mappack from fileplanet.
I extracted all the multiplayer maps into my maps folder and edited my
mapcycle file.

Now everytime people try to connect they get the error: missing map
mapname. Disconnecting.

I put sv_download to 1 and my downloadurl to
http://www.eleanetwork.com/hlpmaps which is a folder I created under my
website root and thus should be open for downloads.

What else do I need to do?

Ok this is a new thread :)

First of all I didn't create the folder as a virtual directory but I've
done that now.
I turned directory browsing on and no difference (I've turned it back off).
I've been reading alot about this on the forums related to this although
most of the info on the forums seems to be guides to matching your real
url and the one you type in the cfg file (copy/paste anyone :))

I've tried taking the www from the url to.
It looks like the maps get some download as the progressbar moves but
then the same error.

do .ain files need to be in .res files for maps?
I tried creating a .res file for a map and put the .ain file in there
but no luck.

I don't have any custom sounds in the folder or anything other than just
the .bsp and the graphs folder.
Could I be missing something from the pack?

Ok, this is where it stands now.

sv_Lan is set to 0 in my server.cfg.

I don't have local access to the server.

I can connect to the server from my home through HLSW and it says it's
running on port 27015.
I can also see the server in the Steam server list but only from my home
connection.

I can see the console window even though I'm connecting through VNC
remotely.

[hlds] .NET, IIS, MS-SQL and dedicated servers

2006-08-13 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Hi,

I just set up a HL2DM server on my existing win2003 server which is
running MS-SQL server and, web page and a couple of .NET web services.
After setting up the server my web page refused to start and complained
that it was being used by another process (restarting 2x seems to fix this).
I then wanted to use ogsWatcher to start my server automatically and
needed to install .NET 2.0 but I was running .NET 2.0 beta before that.
After installing 2.0 the ASP tab disappeared from the IIS manager and
the shortcut to the IIS manager also disappeared from the administrative
tools folder (I can still start it through the Start-Run-inetmgr)
Anyone else having problems with the 2.0 version of .NET with IIS 6.0 ?
Is anyone running a source server alongside MS-SQL and IIS successfully?

Thank you,

2006-08-13 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Thanks Frazer,

I found an entry in the registry as you described it.
The ASP.NET tab (which is what I meant) is back.
I'm still not able to get my main webpage (or the web services) to start
in IIS.

The process can not be started because it's being used by another
process is a loose translation of the error message (the server OS is
in Swedish much to my frustration since I don't speak Swedish).

It seems that restarting the computer over and over again isn't working
anymore.
I found this article on the microsoft website:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;813368 but I
can't test it until I get a hold of my server hoster on monday.

[hlds] HL2MP and the HLDSUpdateTool

2006-08-08 Thread Valdimar Kristjansson

Hi,

I've been trying to set up a half life 2 deathmatch server on my win2003
server.
I've managed to get a game running using the tool available through the
Steam tools (source dedicated server).
The problem with that setup is that while I can connect to it no one
else seems to see it.

The setup:

In Sweden I have the server running the dedicated server tool.
In Iceland I'm running HL2 on my laptop and connecting without any
problems (no VPN or anything).
My friend in Iceland (which is used to play on game servers) can't
even see the server in the server list and if he adds it to the
favorites list he gets a message that the server is not responding.

No I would have guessed that the problem was that the server wasn't
allowing incoming traffic on port 27015 but then my laptop shouldn't be
able to connect either.

After all that hassle I decided to give the HLDSUpdateTool from the
Steam website.

I downloaded the tool and installed it to C:\Program files\Valve\HLServer

Then I opened command prompt, navigated to the afforementioned path and
typed HLDSUpdateTool -command update -game hl2mp dir .
The update then began and went smoothly.

After the download I had a lot of files in my HLServer directory with a
directory named after my Steam account name.
It seems that the update tool created that folder and put about half of
the files needed to run the server in that folder and then the rest in a
folder named hl2mp (which was also in the account name folder).

The HLDS.exe file needed to run the server was in my account name folder
and when I ran it it complained that it couldn't find hl.dll which was
in the dlls folder that was only in the original hl2mp folder and not in
the user account folder.

Now I need to copy some of the files from the hl2mp folder to the
account name\hl2mp folder but I'm not sure which files or if it really
is supposed to be like that.

Finally I managed to get a console window that keeps telling me the fps
of the server and seems to be running a game.
This time I can't see the server from my laptop and it doesn't seem to
exist.

Is there a guide to running a server for HL2DM that works out there?

Hope this makes some sense to y'all,
